    I'm thinking the cap lock didn't really appear until 1836. Correct me if I'm wrong. So, the fur trade ended around 1840. That means most of the cap lock half stock rifles were probably carried by the migrants heading to the Oregon- California country.

    i would say an arquebus penetrating full plate is largely dependant on the quality of the armor. a high end suit with a proper temper i think would absolutely stop or deflect an arquebus shot in the breastplate or helmet, specifically head on. the armor tapers down and gets thinner in the sides and especially the rear so taking a shot to the back would probably be a far more devastating. also too, when firing these things in mass at a formation of fully armored men, shots are bound to find weak points due to the sheer volume of fire. i just dont think that direct hits on the thickest parts of the armor would punch through it like paper. firearms in europe predate the full plate harness too so i think armorers were definitely conscious of gun fire when making suits

    Hey, just got one, what do you think would be the max powder charge such as a historical accurate load that would have been used in combat?

    • @FullMetalAmerican
      @FullMetalAmerican Před 5 měsíci

      With a barrel that length 70-75 grains of 2f is good. They likely would have used more do to early powder being much courser and burning slower.

    I wonder if anyone would know the answer, I want to get this same arquebus, but I'd like to get it rifled and put miniball in it like what was used in the Civil War ( I know it's not historically accurate ) I would just like a more accurate black powder in an older style. Is it possible to have this done?😊

    • @FullMetalAmerican
      @FullMetalAmerican Před 7 měsíci

      Technically yes, you would have to take it to a professional gunsmith who works with muzzleloaders. The big issue you would run into is finding or making ammo. This particular one is in .62 most minie ball are .57-58 or in rare cases early in history .69. There are people who could make you a mold specific to what ever caliber it ended up being. It is important that a professional do it and that the barrel strength not be compromised. Doing rifling typically bores out the barrel to a larger caliber, you have to make sure that it does not become too thin.

      if the screws are removable, I suggest doing that. The screws can be patinaed without problem, you just need to make sure they are properly cleaned of residue after.

    An arquebus was simpler to use, and faster to reload than a crossbow, as well as having greater power. A longbow was faster to reload than an arquebus, but it couldn't compete power-wise.

    In the early years of the American Cival War both the North and the South bought tens of thousands of these muskets. They were originally Flintlocks but were converted to percussion. Yours appears to be a Yankee conversions with the sweated on bolster for the nipple. The Southern muskets i have seen in museums were converted using the drum and nipple conversion method.

    If you can make good cord and practice, you can get that match to hover over your pan of powder about a 1/4" or so and itll be super quick to go off . With my home built matchlock, it has really good lock time with out it being a snaping lock.

    I bought the new Lyman/Perdersoli GPR signature Series in .50. Closest thing we can get to a real Hawken, what with the heavy barrel, stock, sights barrel. Very heavy but really close to an original, EXCEPT I bought the flint lock model. A half stock Hawken in flintlock was an extremely rare gun; I'm not sure it actually ever existed. Wish I had bought the percussion model and looked elsewhere for a flint longrifle.

    • @FullMetalAmerican

      Flintlock half stocks did exist, but as you said were rare. The British actually made many trade rifles of that sort with rounded barrels.

    Many reenactors and even historians mistakenly apply the name “apostle” to the charges. This likely came from the bandolier being misnamed the “twelve apostles” because of the number of charges thereon. That term, frequently referred to in modern secondary source literature, came into use only in more recent times. There isn’t one source prior to the late 19th century mentioning this term which indicates that it originated in the Victorian era when Renaissance studies were gaining popularity. English History scholars of the time examined extant examples of bandoliers from the English Civil War preserved in the Tower of London and found they all had 12 charges; that was the standard in England during the 17th century. Being in the habit of romanticizing history and the fact that most wars were about religion, they rationalized the number of charges as being influenced by the number of Jesus’ disciples. To set the record straight, the number of charges was determined from the size of the musket, that is, the weight of the ball. Each musketeer was issued a pound of lead from which they would cast their ammunition. If they had a 1⅓ oz musket, a pound of lead would provide them with 12 balls. A “two-ounce” musket would have eight charges. Throughout Europe, the number of charges varied between 8 and 16. This rifle has a set trigger. The back trigger take the slack and weight out of the second trigger. This makes it what is sometimes called a hair trigger. When I pull the second trigger it is very light, making for a smooth accurate shot.
