What an extravaganza! Generations of JAZZ, Dizzy and Buddy, then B.B King who never took a solo, Stanley Clarke and Ron, Petrucciani and Herbie, Joe Williams, Sarah and Mtransfer and Bobby and Diane Shur! Hat's off to whomever organized this. And hats off to Quincy Jones whom I know faught like hell to make this possible. Jazz is washing away as it lacks culture and the young people think simply improvising is jazz. In 10 years jazz will be any hybrid of pop music with jazz improv. Gone!

the first 2/3s were just lovely. Then Sarah Vaughan was alright, then the shrieking started. Poor Joe Williams next to those howling pop twats. It was cool to see the front row, and as you looked from near to far it was just famous face after famous face watching some of the greats. Overall, B-

I was just searching for covers of Urgent and found this one. Holy hell did this guy have an awesome voice. It's a shame he isn't among us anymore. But I bet he's jammin' with the angels now. 🤘 Awesome "saxophone/guitar-riff" too. 😊

Some excellent musicians there.... but the vocalists ruined it... sharps, flats everywhere...screeching, all trying to outdo each other.... absolutely dreadful performance.

Yeah, the attack on the snare is definitely different in the 3rd verse and the overall sound is tighter (as mentioned). Porcaro actually introduces his appearance with a tight buzz right into that first snare crack (here I am!), which is also repeated later (Gadd actually does this once, as well, in the 2nd chorus). Overall, Gadd provides a much more relaxed, yet deeply groovin' vibe (his trademark and impossible to cop). Gadd's groove here has a type of loose, N'Awlins funk vibe with those smooth and long buzz strokes Gadd is known for. But in the 3rd verse, Gadd's relaxed funk vibe is replaced with a tighter, brighter groove for the finale. Porcaro even adds in a signature 16th double lick on the kick (once) and a quick hi-hat bark (3ê...only once), both of which are completely absent from Gadd's playing. Porcaro just couldn't help himself. It's indicative of his playing. I think it was smart not to have Porcaro play the tom pattern at the end of the chorus. That would have revealed even more, imo, since their overall feel is so different...but alas, they repeat and fade out. What's even more remarkable than all of this is that, despite the differences, both drummers fit like a glove with Chuck Rainey's bass part (which I highly doubt was punched in at verse 3). Masterful and the very highest level of playing to be on the same track with flawless delivery. Proves why these guys are the heaviest of all time!
