    Gene Wensel once said, “ If you can’t keep your FIRST 3 arrows in a 5” circle,move up,you are to far away! “ consistent form is if not the most important thing to being accurate. Second , pick one bow to shoot for the year,have a backup but only use it when necessary. Third, poundage don’t believe in the myth about practicing with a light bow to get your form right, get your form straight with the bow you plan on using all year

  • @thechroniclesofthegnostic7107

    I'm so glad you caution patience. One thing that seems almost never discussed relates to the fundamental question, "Why DO you bowhunt anyway??" For me, returning to bowhunting almost exclusively many years ago, then also going traditional, came from an early fall day when in thick woods a deer so very frustratingly kept moving around 30 to 60 yards out, loud all the time but barely even being visible, let alone coming in close to a shot. That frustration though? Was so... damn... exciting. And I realized by comparison every year of gun hunting had been a chore by comparison, at best punctuated by only a *few moments* of excitement. I keep hearing Carly Simon's "Anticipation" in my head when I go out into the field ever since. 😂 And realize it's not the shot and kill I enjoy, but the wonderful drawn-out process of "aaaaalllllmost" being there and getting ever closer until I am. 😊

    Two things from the Wensels. 1) between 18 yards, and 35 yards, a Whitetail is likely to jump the string. 2) Now that they are older, Barry is hunting from 16 yards. I don't actually know anyone who is dead on, all the time from 35 yards. If you look at the best barebow shooters at the Lancaster indoor shoot, under match pressure, they goof shots with fancy gear, and light draw weights, from 20 yards. 7 rings seem to show up often enough. So you have to face up to two things. Either you don't mind wounding, and wounding is the big secret of bowhunting. Survey after survey shows it. Or you are shooting from extremely short range. This isn't such a big problem for whitetail hunting. Or bears. Even moose. Since getting really close is possible.

    • @thecodeoftraditionalarcher2726
      @thecodeoftraditionalarcher2726 Před 2 měsíci

      I must say I agree with some of your points- wounding though.. not my big secret in fact I speak of losing an animal in my book since few folks ever speak of that. The big issue is every single predator on the planet- from raptors, bears to big cats wound when they hunt. There is not a single hunter out there across N America that has not wounded an animal or they simply are not hunting- across any weapons platform. I met the Wensels as a kid in the 70s- great fellas and icons truly but they also didn't discourage folks from the skill sets of traditional bowhunting either. The issue with success largely depends on opportunity (game pops) (private land) (time afield) and skillset as well.. they all factor in. Most folks that are hunting the land where a lot of "pros" have hunted are looking at very high deer pops- in comparison here in Ontario you may see one decent buck a year- if luck and skill is on your side with a 6-8 deer per square mile ratio give or take. I have seen the emphasis on success become "horn porn" more so in the past 15-20 years than prior.. it has always been there but success at all costs including risky shots seems to be the go to thing for many folks that follow what the "hunting industry" is pushing these days. I like to eat venison, it's the best organic meat in my opinion out there..and as much as I like to see big bucks- you can`t eat antlers. I know friends of mine out West that can take shots 30 yards and are effective- I also know folks that do not and get closer- but that's the point. They know what their limits are. Knowing one's limit is critical, and this is not talked about enough these days. If your limit is ten feet then it's ten feet.. make that yours. I spoke with Bryan Burkhardt (Comptons President) about this recently- I have become in the past 20-25 years very very picky about the shots I take- and he has as well.. its a learning curve and for new folks having a starting point is critical- even if its close. Thank you for the comment!

    So important to show respect to the animal you are hunting. Making a quick kill shows that you respect and care for the life you just took. I once made a clean kill at 35 yards, but I wasn't talented enough to take that shot. I probably could hit the 4" circle 60% of the time at that distance, but that's not a good enough percentage. I will never take a 60% kill shot again.

    Another idea which I have tried, if you have an area suitable for stump shooting but not so much to shoot at, bring a ball with you. A tennis ball or smaller. Hitting that, fetching the arrow and shooting back at the ball again is fun but gives you constantly varying angles and distances. I use blunts of course. As long as it is an isolated spot away from people. Someone might like to try it.

    GOOD video! I would advise any new traditional archer to start off with a light poundage bow and develop good form, and also to learn to tune arrows and the different factors that affect an arrow's flight, such as arrow length, spine of the arrow, and weight of the tips. Enjoy the journey and experiment to find what works best for you. There's no shortcut.

      One of the biggest things I see from new folks is wanting to shortcut- this insert name "expert" told me to do this-- this one told me to do that.... nothing wrong with research- but if folks slowed down and took the time to actually get a consistent application that fit them- not the pros with a million followers and product sponsors= they would be much happier.

    I shoot snowshoe hares year round especially in the winter. I find my first shot is often a miss because they do something unexpected but my follow-up shot produces which is where having blind knocking and speed shooting plus instinctive skills helps. I started hunting bunnies with blunts with a 45 lb bow but did not always get a clean kill. I've since switched to cheap 3 blade broadheads which are much more ethical imo although you may not get a lot of shots out of one point.

    One of my goals this year is to get out on some hunts with my nephew. He's shooting a compound vs. my trad bow but I think we could be a good compliment to one another. I agree on focusing on small game. Sadly there aren't many turkeys up here in Alberta but I wish. I like your channel, keep it up!

  • @kevinseel3258
    @kevinseel3258 Před 4 měsíci

    That's a stunning bow! As a righty you could maybe shoot that thumb draw on the offside? That would be killer. I agree, there's alot about the bow. I started in archery 3 years ago because I loved longbows, then I moved to recurve and now I've gone to Turkish and Mongol style bows shooting off the right by thumb. Traditional bows are just beautiful, period. I'm not into pullies and stuff although I know they are more accurate and faster. BUT, I can shoot 6 arrows accurately to 20 yards in the time it takes a compound archer to get off 1 or 2.

  • @kevinseel3258
    @kevinseel3258 Před 4 měsíci

    I started shooting 3 under on my Bear recurve which made sense to me and I was reasonably accurate, but since then I've become interested in Asiatic shooting thumb draw on the off side which has a totally different sight picture. I had to become instinctive and I've learned that you need to cycle a LOT of arrows to train your brain, and you need to do that at every distance you'll shoot from a variety of positions. I try to move around alot when I shoot and not shoot fixed distances. The other thing I found useful was learning to guess distances accurately. I'll look at a stick when I'm out walking, guess its distance and then pace it out. So much to learn!

  • @kevinseel3258
    @kevinseel3258 Před 4 měsíci

    I picked up trad archery 3 years ago at an age of 53 and I regret starting late in life but it's become central to my mental health now. I shoot recurve and asiatic and try to cycle a few hundred arrows per week and it's my meditation. You can't shoot a bow and be mentally elsewhere. I started hunting and there have been more shots that I haven't taken than have. Critters are generally safe around me but I do enjoy the process of a hunt the most. Nice vid, subscribed.

    Now, I get that the longbow first shot will be quieter vs a recurve first shot - you explained why. What is the significance of that? Does that mean you get a possibility of a second shot? Wouldn't an animal get spooked on the first shot anyway, even with the difference in sound emitted?

    • @thecodeoftraditionalarcher2726
      @thecodeoftraditionalarcher2726 Před 4 měsíci

      I see what you are saying... in general alot of folks I find are looking for a few things.. One of them is how quiet a bow style is longbow vs recurve - hence my tip/pointer. This however does not take into consideration bow design, string types- low stretch etc.. and of course how an animal is behaving when one is hunting is critical. As a tracker, at one time working for an outfit to find deer that had been hit- I can say that a nervous and alert animal can react to sound- any sound much faster than an animal that does not know you are there. A quarter of a second makes a huge difference in some scenarios.. Animal body language and behavior matter a lot when hunting of any kind.. So getting off a second shot tends to be a pretty individual situational event rather than the norm. Can you get a second shot off? Yes- does it happen often.. Id say its not the norm.. Cheers!

    Hmm interesting question. The first bow that drew me to the beauty of a bow was a Pearson Equalizer with similar lines to the Browning you're holding. My first hunting bow was a Glass Pearson which I still have. But the bow I am shooting now is an A&H long bow love the feel love the way it shoots though not 100% sold on the grip. It's a bit narrow in the throat of the grip. I bought it for 3d from a friend and this coming season will be y first full season with it. I haven't found my perfect hunting bow yet it most likely will be a take down. Multiple limb weights with one perfect grip .

    Something I started to late this year. The last couple years I've been working with a young Harris's Hawk that I use for falconry. We are just finishing our second season together and have had limited success . Mostly due to me either not getting the flushes right for her or miss judging her weight. Anyway I was finding she was on and off about chasing grouse and towards the end of the season I thought if I could get her to catch and eat a grouse she might more effort into it. On this I took up my bow for the first time with the intent that if I could atleast hit hit and injure the grouse making it easy to catch she would see that they are worth the effort. Unfortunately I couldn't hit the dang things but it has opened some new ideas for next season. Oh and for the record I was using a bunny bister arrow so on sharp points to worry about.
