    Hello there and friendly greetings! First of all: thank you for sharing your material for free. It's crazy and absolutely appreciable and praiseworthy! I want to share something, not much but maybe it could be useful for you or someone else, don't know. I've read your VCV Rack Cheat Sheet (finally someone made it...) and I was really interested in the cable management. I've been quite an anarchist about cable color code but I've managed to use SUBMARINE WM-101 that allows to use a virtually infinite number of colors. But I don't use an infinite number of colors: if, for istance, RED is the color code for audio information, I use different shades of RED to differentiate the audio from different modules or different module block. Also, if GREEN is for modulation, I use shades of green to differentiate regular modulation (like a regular LFO) from random modulation (like WIQUID modules). Ditto for the BLUE, regular clock/trigger/gates and shades of blue for random stuffs. And so on and so forth. This way I know at glance what do what, where and how. Yep, it's a little bit crazy at first but as per my experience it works like a charm once you get the hang of it. Also, if you use SUBMARINE WM-101 you can do a nice thing : czcams.com/video/_HiHmtv6oIM/video.html (please keep in mind it was the very first time I was recording my voice, I was almost literally dying of cringe....) I hope I returned a little something of knowledge. Have a great week and thanks again!

      Hey The Great Assyr! Thank you for the comment and for explaining your cable color coding technique. I like it a lot! I might start using it 😁. Your video is great. I never thought about removing the cables and then hitting Ctrl+z to automatically replace them in a new color. So slick. It would be super fast to shift+click the cable to delete it and then Ctrl+z. Thanks again for the information and for the kind words ✌️😊 and I'm glad you like the content so far. I'm working on an update to the VCV Rach Cheat Sheet which should be posted soon. If you start mixing and matching with midi gear, that 24ppqn setting is what you're going to need. The higher resolution clocks give you some extra hits and pattern complexity per bar in the included rhythm maps. 4ppqn gets you the basic patterns, turning up clock resolution gets more details.

      @@yourpalrob I stumble bubbled into the discovery, while attempting to clock the sequencer with an external midi clock signal. Kept having to crank the resolution to not have the sequencers way out of time. And upon further experimentation, I learned about the extras hidden between the 4ppqn drum hits inside the 8 and 24 ppqn resolutions. Mostly rapid fills on the snare and hihat channels.

    Nice vid! After going through the spreadsheet you missed the big punch line on inputting math to VCV Rack. If you're inputting a voltage and, say, want to go up a semitone in a 1 volt/octave input you can use "+1/12" in the text entry box. Or pick how many steps you want to go up or down and just have it do the math.

    Regarding primes for rhythm, that's a neat method I've not used. How I've used primes is via a clock divider. I have a master clock running at some rate equivalent to the fastest burst or drum fill I want, then divide that down to run sequencers / rhythm generators. I'll take, for instance, a /5 to the drums, and a /7 to the melodic sequencer. The pattern lengths aren't something I've fiddled with, but I sure will now.

    I'd just tried this out, and my only gripe is that the range for the frequency is non-standard instead of Hz, v/oct or 0-1.. when trying to enter a text value, it's not readily apparent what the value will equal in Hz.

    • @yourpalrob
      @yourpalrob Před měsícem

      You're spot on! I think the tuning is weird too. I always add a tuner when I use the Black WaveTable because the frequency knob is unconventional. If you switch between fine and coarse as well, the manual tuning becomes slightly flat. So odd, but it is kind of a fun quirk I guess. I usually just feed pitches through the v/oct and it ends up working fine 😁

      @yourpalrob Suggested swerve for April fools or whenever you want to have a vid that's way different: 4 hours of you manually tuning a piano, with the only vocals from a noisy tape recorder placed inside the piano, consisting of mumbling and muttering curses. (Distant voice, almost dominated by sympathetic piano vibrations) "Ouch!, stupid f@^*ing wrench." Camera only showing close up of the hammers.

    I have a large multi-voice drone patch I've been building with instances of Warp Core (Infrasonic) and Saich (Instruo) at the core. I was looking to breathe some new life into the sound and this video gave me just the inspiration I needed!! I replaced my Warp Cores with the Black Wavetable modules, using Frolic/Glee (Sapphire) modules to modulate the CV inputs. Then out to Valhalla Supermassive (because, of course 🤣🤣 ). It sounds AMAZING!!!

      Awesome! That sounds like a great patch, @MeditativeInstruments. Drone patches are so good. I really enjoy listening to evolving ones with swelling harmonics. It sounds like your patch is one like that. Thanks for the comment and I'm glad you liked the video! :)

      @@yourpalrob I'm really excited about some of the new changes that have happened in VCV Rack. I make some really large patches, because I use VCV Rack as a DAW for live performance (mic'd acoustic flute w/ VCV drone). I was hovering at 75% CPU usage until a recent update, where suddenly the same patch is running at 34% CPU. I don't know what they optimized, but I like it!! 😇

    • @yourpalrob
      @yourpalrob Před měsícem

      I noticed that too. I think some of the major modules were updated recently as well to optimize CPU usage. A lot of my big patches are slick now too and I love it. I can add more to them now haha. I've been wanting to try a live setup. Your live flute and drone setup sounds sick! I'm going to try to make something similar but for harmonica.

      @@yourpalrob I've been building and incrementally improving a really big patch I call the "RackDAW." It mimics some features of a DAW like Ableton or Bitwig. One of these days I'll get busy and release it on Patchbay with a video on how to use it. The current version is a virtual audio-engineer's console, integrated with the studio microphones (using the VCV Audio-8 module). Microphone arming, transport control, channel & master volume & panning, and manual chord selection is mapped to a LaunchKey49 controller. Mic input, sample recorder, and multiple sample playback thru one "Mic Submixer" (I like the Venom modular mixers). A 2nd 4-channel submixer for background loops & VCV patches is sent to a side-chained compressor (sidechain input from Mic Submixer), then on to a master mixer. All mixer channels controlled by the Launchkey faders & pan/mute controls. The "RackDAW" doesn't make any sounds on its own. It's just the audio engineering infrastructure. I export all my good drone sounds as "Clips" instead of saving them as patches. I run the RackDAW as the actual patch, then import a saved Clip to add a saved soundscape. Clips don't need to be wired to an audio-output module. Instead, I wire them to a Venom 4-channel mixer strip before saving the clip. Then, from within the RackDAW patch, I can simply import the clip I want, wire its output to an open channel, then with the controller keyboard, unmute it and set the volume levels. I use the Record/Play section of the Launchkey's transport control section to manage microphone arming (Record button), loop reset (Stop button), loop clear (Undo button), etc. I like the "Lilac Loop" module for live looping. I plan to make a video of my RackDAW patch and publish it on Patchbay, but at the moment I'm deep in the middle of an audiobook project.

      @@yourpalrob Thank you for your diligent efforts. Years ago, I created a few animation tutorials on my sister channel, iamYork, so I am acutely aware of the significant time investment and the often minimal rewards involved in producing these types of videos. As a hobbyist in modular synthesis, a professional sound designer, and a film editor, I greatly appreciate your articulate and easily comprehensible explanations, which make for a truly enjoyable experience. Your conceptualizations of modules alone inspire numerous ideas for my own setups. Keep up the outstanding work. I am an avid admirer.

    Great tutorial! One question - at 9:40, couldn't you connect the Caudal module directly to μMap and just use the offset & scale? Seems redundant to put an offset module and an attenuvertor inbetween.

    • @yourpalrob
      @yourpalrob Před 2 měsíci

      Thank you for the comment, @AB-wf8ek! You totally can just use the μMap's offset and scale; however, I find the additional attenuverter easier to dial in than the μMap alone. μMap's controls are very sensitive in my experience so having a module with a little more wiggle room helps me. If you want a slick minimal module set up, you should totally skip out on the redundant modules :)

    For tuning oscillators, if the knob lets you put in a value in Hz when you right click it, you can put in pitches like "E5" and VCV will set the knob to the frequency for that pitch. That right click menu also lets you put in math expressions.
