William Brewster, Thomas Rogers and Stephen Hopkins were some of my 12th great grandfather's. Family skuttlebutt was we were descendents of Mary Allerton - that folklore was bandied about for decades and I believed it until I set out to prove it. I still haven't found any evidence of Mary Allerton but found the others (and evidence of a lot of intermarrying between 1st and 2nd cousins on the Hopkins line too). 😳 I could have lived my whole life without that knowledge and been very happy to not know that. 🤢 I met a beautiful young man in high school when I was 16 years old. Our connection was strengthened by the fact we had both had moved 3000 miles away from home in Massachusetts where we were both born to Arizona; we'll be married 40 years in October. We recently discovered he too is a descent of Stephen Hopkins (and also Richard Warren) making us very distantly related. 😳 We share no DNA thankfully, but I would never have married someone even distantly related 400 years in the past had I known. You just never know who you are marrying really because after 2 DNA tests and an exhausting application process to the General Descends of the Mayflower Society later I've come to this conclusion: every person on this planet is distantly related, you just have to look back far enough in the family tree to find the connection. So ... howdy cousins! 👋

Thank you for taking time to Commemorate the 400th Anniversary of the Pilgrims! Thank you for helping us renew our Covenant with God by showing our gratitude for those who have gone before and the opportunity to Pledge our Gratitude and Allegiance to God. I loved the quote from F. W. Boreham you shared: "When a wrong wants righting, or a work wants doing, or a truth wants preaching, or a continent wants opening, God sends a baby into the world to do it...." When you shared this, I couldn't help but think about how God our Father sent His own Beloved Son, Jesus Christ as a baby. So too does God send all His Children. Hense, we can see how Vital building and raising Families in Zion (for all those who righteously desire to follow God) can be!

I wish Church wards would quit teaching bland, generalized messages of "gratitude" annually in Nov. sacrament meetings, and instead recommend talks on how America was founded (1620), and how it was able to be the place where the Gospel was restored, as alluded to by Elder Callister. Pres. Hinckley gave several talks (not in GC) on the sacred trust and debt we owe to our pilgrim fathers, comparing their dedication to religious liberty with that of our early Church forefathers. (He, as I, found we had Mayflower descendants, which drives all this home even more poignantly.) There are a lot of parallels in the pilgrims' gradual journey from England to Plymouth Rock and the Saints' long "trek" from Palmyra to Utah. We should be highlighting them and learning from them.

Yes, it is freedom of Christianity, & Judaism & Islam, as much as it is freedom of atheism & secularism. Yet, the movement to eject religion from the puiblic square is irreligious. It cannot tolerate sharing the public square with religion (under the first amendment), but seeks to dispel all belief in God, so that only godlessness remains. There will be no fairness whatsoever when godlessness reigns.

I am in a different tradition outside Abrahamic system. There are not short of Christians who exalt the first commandment because they believe it *has to be* the law of the land. Forget atheists. Where would that leave religious minorities like myself ? When you and your fellow Christians argue over biblical interpretation, religious minorities have to take collateral damage. Why should they have to put up with that ?

@@khanhminhnguyen7274 The main point here is: Don't stop believing. There is an interfaith movement asserting itself against the godless/secular conspiracy, made up of people from all walks and persuasions. This movement is not so concerned about your belief system, as it is about believers exercising their rights under the first amendment. It is in direct reponse to that segment of society who want to kick all believers to the fringes. Yes, Christians feature prominently in these public forums, along with other major religions. But at the end of the day, the godless conspiracy is coming for all believers- religious minorities included. It really is a case of: United we stand (with our religious diversity) divided we fall.

@@dalainajoeburhans959, I am genuinely curious what your ultimate goal is in your comments. I can guarantee that no reasonable people outside your faith share your wild belief that a god led some dudes in the late 18th century to form a government specifically with the aim of making their country hospitable to Mormonism (especially not when the comments are so nasty and snide, as yours are). I can tell you from deductive reasoning that if you respond to criticism by digging in your heels on a topic (your belief in your religion) that has nothing to do with the criticism you received (your implication that high schools should be teaching Mormon ideas of American exceptionalism), it actually shows that you are incapable of responding reasonably to criticism. So I suppose I should feel sorry for you. Really, though, Mormonism’s obsession with pleasantness is weird. Mormons think it is obviously reasonable, but people outside the religion do not share this obsession. The idea that someone is wrong because their tone feels negative is one of those things that Mormon leaders have taught you to keep you from listening to criticism. It is so easy to discount contrary evidence because it puts down your religion instead of building up... something, but there is really no reason why those concepts should have anything to do with what is true or false.

Why would that be weird to have happen again, yes, even in America? You can say cutely “so that Mormonism could be started” all you want but all the saints will do is roll eyes and internally want to scream at you that it isn’t Mormonism that’s important (it was a nick name given to us that we’ve over timed turned into a badge of honor instead of a pejorative) rather the fullness of the Gospel of Christ.
