Glider Bungee Launches Same Location 75 Years Apart
zhlédnutí 8KPřed měsícem
75 years ago it took a large team of people to launch a glider off our West slope onto the ridge using bungee chords. Today we still launch gliders using bungees on exactly the same slope. However, nowadays it only takes a couple of people.

This is very old footage probably from around 1949 of an Eon Olympia 1 being launched by being towed by a vehicle down our ridge in a fairly brisk Westerley. As far as we're aware this isn't something which has been attempted in recent years. If the wind is favourable and we can find someone expendable to drive the Land Rover maybe it's one for this years event

Rigging and flying a Primary Glider at Camphill in the 1930s. Constructed of wood, metal cables and cloth, these aircraft were inexpensive, very light and easy to fly. Primary gliders were generally launched by bungee cord, whereby a rubber rope was arranged in a "V" with the glider at the apex. The ends of the rope were pulled by hand to launch the glider from a slope as is demontrated in the ...

    Can anyone answer me three questions: Q1/ What was the type of glider she goes solo in at 13:30 and Q2/ Did she have any dual instruction in any type of glider at all before the clip of her taking of at 13:30 and 3/ If not, how could the instructor be certain she wouldn't stall and or spin if she hadn't had any dual? I know the wing loading was very low in that type of glider, but even so...

    In 1968 I spent a year at an English boarding school. They had the Cadet Corp which trained kids in things military. The Air Force section did a Glider bungee launch demonstration on the cricket field. The glider did get airborne and flew for 60 feet or so. I thought, well that's one way to do it and headed off to find a secluded place to have a smoke.

    Airbrakes open, foget to check, close and lock during the preflight check.. This is why we use checklists these days and have done away with these acronyms to rember by hart (In Dutch.. SKISTOK, Startplaats vrij?, Kap gesloten en gelocked, Instrumenten, Stuurorganen, Trim, Ontkoppelhaak, Kleppen gesloten en gelocked) Also because sailplanes have become more complicated and every model has its own checklists.

    • @Trevor_Austin
      @Trevor_Austin Před měsícem

      A checklist is a checklist, its form is immaterial. I have used written checklists, challenge and response, electronic checklists and done checklists from memory. I have witnessed and omitted items from each type. What I have noticed is that the greater the number of pointless things that are added to lists, the greater the number of important things that are omitted. On takeoff, the big ticket items are controls, ballast, canopy, harness and brakes. Landing its just ballast and gear. Why all the other bollocks has to creep in is beyond me. Omit the crap and focus on the big stuff.

    Smoking a pipe 4 inches from a doped fabric tailplane - H&S what H&S - seriously it's great that old material like this survives. My parents, sister and I used to go to Camphill for Sunday picnics, in those days you could buy a round cardboard badge and go onto the airfield, watch and eat. Many of the gliders, mostly Olympias, had names like "Edale and "Blue John" and a friend of my dad had built one mainly from scrapped parts as I understand it called "Jack O'Winnats" I think his name was Fred Breeze. That was 67/68 years ago but I occasionally go up there to the viewing area to watch the newer composite aircraft flying. It's all fenced off now, as it should be, but the memories quite quickly return. Thanks a lot for posting this. (Just seen another of your videos and "Edale" is featured - I must check them all )

    When I was a kid in the early 60's, there were bungee/tow motor launching of vintage gliders like these at Harvey Young Airport - a small multi hangar grass strip FBO a few miles East of Tulsa, OK. Also Aeronca Champion tow planes took up Schweitzers in the summertime, spending whole afternoons flying over eastern Tulsa.

    This why I learned to fly as a kid in the Seventies, to do what the birds do. Less is more, simple is best. And this old-school soaring epitomizes it. So now I have thousands of hours in airplanes, but still only a couple of glider rides. However, as a fire patrol pilot in the Rockies, I do manage to soothe that itch on occasion by pulling back the throttle on windward slopes. Back when I flew freight, I'd sometimes find myself in the tremendous lift of cold fronts and thunderstorms straddling my course; though at flight idle, I'd hit Vmo, abandon my assigned altitude and soar while I had the opportunity. I apologized to ATC, but in the sparse traffic of the Great Plains, they didn't mind. I figure they knew I was just enjoying myself.
