Art Scholl documentary 1968 The Crowd Above Me, The Sky Below Directed by Bill Rice Produced for television in 1968, this documentary was shot in 16mm film. It features early use of outboard cameras on the aircraft. Great aerial footage.
Wow, glad i stumbled onto this video. Used to look forward to see Art fly his routine at Oshkosh. Many thanks.
Remember when he finished his show? He would make a pass standing on the wing waving to the crowd. Wing leveler on.
I was honored and humbled to call Art my friend for many years. RIP my friend, Blue Skies.
my grandpa knew him before he passed he and another guy did all the sheet metal on one of his planes he has his desk now his wife gave it to him
That’s amazing. I’m just now heading of this man. What a legend. I’ve never heard of an “acrobatic pilot” before now. It was tragic when he was killed during the making of “Top Gun.” His innovative camera movements were inspirational for the film. They dedicated the film to his memory.
They dedicated in such a way that I never knew that...
Nice clip of the Yak-18PM. Art was something else.
He should be raising his blood pressure not jogging 😊
San Bernadino College back when it was an excellent school...now it's "transformed."
Mercy, they were in a hurry back then!
Pennzoil please
Watch this in 0.75 speed to see it normal
God Bless the badass, addicted to adrenaline.
Fantastic short documentary. R.I.P Art, the real Maverick Top Gun.
I flew the chipmunk in the RCAF in 1968 for initial flight training 27 hours. I met Art at the Calgary Stampede in the 60’s when he was flying aerobics for the show.
Dudnt realise he crashed during the making of Top Gun - the irony is that his camera Pitts got into a spin and crashed into the sea.
The story I heard was the movie camera was too heavy at it's attach point on the tail, leading to a fllat spin into the Pacific off Catalina island.😅
back to back loop is brutal .
Hey I think I know him
Founded in the fall of 1921 as an adjunct to the Tehama County Fair, the Red Bluff Round-Up was the first Northern California rodeo to join the Cowboys' Turtle Association - a precursor to the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) What an 👏 Awesome History we have here in State of Jefferson territory! Thanks 4 this little 💎 gem!
He died during the filming of Top Gun, just getting some random background footage.
I had this plane i RC. A EZ plane . Very beautiful plane
I built a control line Chipmunk in the mid 70's . It was a beauty but you know what happens to all control line planes...
Found this after watching an episode of the Six Million Dollar Man episode, "Walk a Deadly Wing" that features several excellently filmed scenes of N6311V and other aircraft. Very impressive flying and filming skills are featured throughout, leading me to research and learn about Mr. Art Scholl. Great man, indeed
He flies the cessna in this scene. czcams.com/video/V5bVICgLJCU/video.html
They sure had some fast bucking stock
Love it!
11:34 - Dang! That bucking bar shape hasn't changed! It's still my favorite all-around shape since it does so many things well.
Bit close to the ground I would say, balls or skill who knows, but shit that's dangerous
My dad use to fuel up at Art's place when I was a kid
U can tell he has OCD - His lines, rolls, loops & exit trajectories are just PERFECT !!!
Kinda looks like DB Cooper 🤔
HA! He does!
Pure commitment to training, running in tap shoes like that - what a guy! I wonder what Art would make of modern full composite competition machines? I grew up with a poster of the super-chippy on my wall and a model of it hanging from the roof, the image of the red and blue aircraft is as much a symbol of my youth as any other. Imagine a modern aerobatic aircraft with retracts!
Just happened across this video. Loved it! Art used to do acrobatics at Banning airport in the 60s and as a teenager of 14 yrs old, I would stand in front of the quantsit hut shaped hanger that is in the beginning of the video to watch him. Later on in life I did my cross country duel flight from Saint George Utah to the same Banning airport to get the 170B annual done. This video really brings back memories. Thanks so much for posting it.
I was a fan of his since I saw "Never Look Back" in theaters. I started following his career as a kid and in 1974 I got to meet my hero at the Aerobatic Championships at Grayson County Airport. I was a CAP cadet and we were there to help with marshaling and standing by with bottles for engine starts and stuff like that. My best friend got to marshal a B-52! I met several of the pilots I admired and to a man, they all acted like they were excited to answer stupid questions from kids. Art Scholl went a step further, he let me sit in his Pitts while he explained the controls and let me shadow his "crew chief", a redhead he called "Carrot Top". The next time Art was at a show I went to he called out to me as I approached the flight line. He remembered me! That year he had his Super Chipmunk and I got to sit in that too. He even talked me through how he started it and then I got to go through his preflight with him. The last time I saw him personally, he was in the Pitts again and he had me preflight his plane. I have no doubt that "Carrot Top" and he were looking over my shoulder but it still caught in my throat when he asked me if it was a "go". I left CAP shortly after that but I doubt he had any idea how truly special that was and the impact he had on that young man. Seeing this brought all that back and shows how much he truly loved teaching and encouraging people, even a snot nosed kid in a CAP uniform.
This is amazing!!!!! A story and insight into a man who clearly made an impact on many. Seriously.... thank you so much for sharing it means a lot!
This is an amazing story man I'm so glad you got to experience this with your heroes. Wish you the best and hope you're doing well.
Sounds like Art.
Art Scholl-legend, saw him many times at Reno.
Was fortunate to see him and N13Y at world aerobatic championships in 1970 this side of the pond.Great memories
100 years of fake cowboys getting off on abusing animals
Sheriff Lyle Williams at 2 min. 53 sec.
Lol why is it sped up?
They had lower fps back then
LISTEN TO ME!!! I WANT PENNZOIL!!! Do you hear me??? PENNZOIL!!!
100 years this year
I remember Art very well. While attending San Bernardino Valley College Art was my instructor in the aeronautics classes that I took. Wonderful teacher and pilot. Larry F.
Who had a functioning military jet on their college grounds?
I know nothing about this guy but watching him get so close to the ground during his practice I knew this guy would come to a sticky end, so I stopped and Googled him. Sometimes you just know the inevitability of some things.
Your first three words say everything about you.
Art will always be my favorite cause he called the shots but my all time favorite is patty wagstaff
I,got to see Art Scholl perform in his super chipmunk, at the Dayton Air Show in 1978,he gave a spectualar show which i found very breath taking at times ,no doubt MR.Scholl is the best Pilot Of A Propeller Air Plane.
Indo is comee
Wow. At 13:46, that's the only footage of Frank Tallman - outside of his movie sequences - I've ever seen. Pretty damn cool. In a world of drivers, there have been few guys or girls as talented as Art or Frank. Tallman was just prolific.
Art's devotion to aviation was matched by his devotion to teaching aviation. I think if he was around a while longer, maybe the US wouldn't be having so many personal aircraft accidents each year, due to pilots who seem to not pay attention to their horsepower, especially when lining up for the runway... JMO.
Good to know more about Art Scholl!, I didnt know the Chipmunk was his design
The Chipmunk was not his design but I suspect he modified the design of De Havilland Canada. I watched the Professor many times and saw him on the Sat and Sunday at Reno and still remember well where I was when I got the tragic news. I have always wonder what happened to Aileron?
LEGEND
Damn!! Looks like some very risky moves
San Bernardino valley. College I was.his student. The movie says it all
