    • @ARCSTREAMS
      @ARCSTREAMS Před 4 lety

      its similar to the stills used in france when they make calvados or apple brandy,,the purpose of that pre heater is simply to take advantage of the run in order to pre heat the next batch to run thus cutting down the time it takes to heat it in the pot still ,,they usually have a pipe conduit from the pre heater into the pot still that they open to gravity feed the heated mash there but i think the pre heater on the french still is between the pot and the thumper and not between thumper and condenser ,,then again i cant recall if they even use a thumper on the french still,,maybe it was just pot to heater to condenser

    I don't see it to be very likely old timers used rubber for their seal like that Paste works a hell of alot better and you don't get that horrid taste in your product On another thing someone could see this make a still use that rubber and get very sick Not to mention the bucket, someone who is smart enough to make a still but dumb enough to include these things could kill themselves I understand this is for demonstration of this great tradition, people STILL make liquor they ain't going to stop neither better to promote safety then put people in danger, so I'm told anyway by my friends cousin Other then that I love the still

    • @ntanner1488
      @ntanner1488 Před 5 lety

      Dan Campbell I agree old timers didn’t use rubber seals. It was mostly a rye flour paste but honestly it doesn’t get in your liquor anyway.

    • @dancampbell9005
      @dancampbell9005 Před 5 lety

      There been still ran on flour paste wheat, rye, corn, oats, hell even rice flour paste and the liquor tastes just fine Then there been liquor ran on rubber, take you a sip and it's like chewing on a bitter tire Only PTFE should be used since it don't react with High proof ethanol and leech Can't argue with that unless you half blind and are striped of your taste buds If you don't find rubber present in your spirits try running without it you may not need it whatsoever your still may just seal its self So I'm told by my friend's cousin

    Great! Thumbs up! I'm thinking a great homemade "pelton cup" could be made with a tin can by carefully cutting the side and bottom of the can and leaving one side uncut, then carefully prying open the can to form the "pelton cup" out of two connected half cans. Of course, that's a can that has already had the top opened to pour out the soup or whatever. It would be a little harder to do but to have both top and bottom of the can intact,the top, side and bottom could be cut and the can carefully pried open, wasting the contents. This could be done to a number of cans which could be fastened around something making a pelton wheel which in turn can then be fastened to a shaft of an alternator/generator. Tiny tin cans could be used, not just soup cans. I thought of another idea that I shared with a few here on the internet. A small rear bicycle wheel could be used, like from a child's bicycle. Fasten the folded open tin cans, like I described, around the bicycle wheel and attach the wheel to a front fork of an adult bicycle. Attach a smaller sprocket on the alternator than the one on the bike wheel and put a bicycle chain around them and it will spin the alternator faster than the wheel. The shaft of the front fork of the bicycle could be bolted to a larger wood frame or a slab of concrete could be poured and the bicycle fork stuck in that and when the concrete hardens the fork will be there permanently and stable.

    I doubt very much that this guy is actually running this still. It's set up with running water and something burning in the boiler to produce smoke. If this guy was really running a batch he would never pull the cap off of the boiler and it would be so hot he couldn't put his hand on it without getting burned. It's just set up to simulate running.

They regularly have tours of the cave, and supply all the necessary safety equipment. It is not a difficult cave to visit, but you certainly want a guide to take you through it the first time.
