this is eerie to watch them discuss his head rest and open chin helmet knowing when he crashed his head went forward hitting his chin on steering wheel and his head head immediately jerked backwards hitting the head rest causing blunt force trauma.(cause of death)
He'd be chance bit to save his life if ever be listening on DW's concern to use full face helmet also thing he did not also wears Hans device how such a fearless badass he is!
I’m 30 now, was 8 on that fateful day and I will ever in my life forget it. I don’t remember a lot from back then but I remeber every little event and detail of that day. I honestly had never seen this interview and I will not lie, I needed to see this. Dales wreck still haunts me and hurts to this day, 22 years later. RIP Dale and fly high #3!
I was 7 going on 8. Saw him race twice at Texas in ‘99 and 2000 and saw him and Jr celebrating together for Jr’s first win. It was so unreal losing this man. Long live Dale. Rest in Peace❤️
In an alternate universe: * he walks away from the wreck and retires the next year. becomes a color commentator for NASCAR and leads DEI to championship after championship.*
I was a massive Nascar fan and even bigger Earnhardt fan. As a 9 year old, the day he died part of me died. That was the first true loss I ever felt. Watching this interview... I just wish we had another decade of this man being with us. Not even racing... but him trackside or in the booth would have been gold. He softened up so much in his last years and we really get to see his personality shine in some of these old clips.
Man I miss his interviews and talking with my dad about how he finished the race on Sunday evenings. My dad was a lifelong Earnhardt fan. He would go to Talladega twice a year with his buddies. I never watched or followed Nascar growing up. I was a baseball and football guy. This was the first year I was going to the Talladega fall race in 2001. I regret not going with my dad and sister to see Earnhardt race. Now, all I can do is watch replays. God bless you Dale. You were gone too soon.
I will never forget sitting on my couch watching the 2001 Daytona 500. Watched all of this happen. I was never an Earnhardt fan. In fact, I loved to hate him. But his death was a shock. NASCAR died with Dale Earnhardt.
The era of nascar I grew up was the late 00’s with Toyota and the COT where the median age of the drivers were late 20s early 30s So watching any nascar from the late 90s early 00s and seeing the median age of the drivers being late 30s early 40s is jarring to me Perhaps this plays a part as to why older fans don’t relate to the newest batch of drivers who have a median age of early to mid 20s
Dale was the greatest ever
Sure do miss these days in NASCAR. Racing is not the same.
One cool dude
I’m a dire hard Gordon fan but this guy was the better driver.
God the end of that clip is just pointing out everything that killed him
And they didn't know it at the time.
Let’s fucking go. Dale did it his way.
“I won the Daytona 500 with you… with the open face helmet by the way.” Lmao
This is an incredibly ominous interview. Even if Dale listened to Darrell, I don't think it would've saved him.
I find it ironic that they are talking about his open helmet wearing just a day before he dies from head trauma.
One of the final practice sessions of his life..
The helmet didn't make a difference anyways, he hit his left-edge of the forehead and compressed the neck and got the base fracture of the neck.

Was his shootout car the same car as the 500 car?
Sr was the biggest star in America next to MJ
He will always be the man
If he had a full face helmet during that 500. Would he have lived?
He'd be chance bit to save his life if ever be listening on DW's concern to use full face helmet also thing he did not also wears Hans device how such a fearless badass he is!
The Oppermans from Texas will always love and miss you Dale Earnhardt Sr, your fans forever. Jerry and Sugar Bear and Gloria and Bear from Texas
Dude this is one of the best dale videos ever 3️⃣

Agreed!!! Don't think I'll ever get over it!!! Miss my Superman!!!
😭😭😭😭😭

Sure do miss Dale Sr. He was the best at what he did.
“Safest helmet in Winston Cup racing” Ouch.
In an alternate universe: * he walks away from the wreck and retires the next year. becomes a color commentator for NASCAR and leads DEI to championship after championship.*
These cars sounded so mean.
“Wait a minute I worked with him a year and a half he ain’t never wrong” 😂
Boys, sit back and listen to a true master of his too crafts. Racin' and shit talkin'
If he would of wore a fullface helmet his face wouldnt of been crushed my the steering wheel
man just watching him get ready in that car he can do it blindfolded gives me chills
DW had some great jabs “We saw you lift” LOL

When Dale started that car, what a glorious noise that engine made🔥🔥🔥
What I remembered as a kid. A business side that was focused and dead set honest and the smile that showed his passion for the sport and competition.

Damn...that helmet question is such a butterfly effect
Dale Earnhardt should have been a 4th FOX booth commentator
The more I listen to that, the more I think he would have made a great technical advisor during race and practice
Man this is spooky!! Open face helmet is what killed him, his lower jaw was pushed out the back of his skull!!
Darrell Waltrip was right. Idiotic move. That helmet was 100% useless for anything.
NASCAR use to be so much better
I will never forget sitting on my couch watching the 2001 Daytona 500. Watched all of this happen. I was never an Earnhardt fan. In fact, I loved to hate him. But his death was a shock. NASCAR died with Dale Earnhardt.
Darrell, have you ever ridden in a passenger car with him, larry, yeah Darrell OMG !!!!😁😁😁😁
John 3:16.
That open helmet, no Hahn's device & I'm not even sure he was buckled up killed him.

3:47 anybody know what he was saying when he was getting in the car?
it pains me to know how i hated him , but miss him so much. we miss you dale earnhardt. i was so wrong.
The playful trash talking among men that are confident in their craft, this is just a bit of fun, no bs politics or ratings crap
We miss you Dale. 😞

Dale and DW would have been great on TV
Been nice if dale would’ve wore the helmet
Darrell should not have put his helmet on that put the jinks on him ! Damn it Darrell !!!
