Sharing my life as a marine biologist and my work with marine mammals. My goal has always been to use my passion for animals like sea otters and walruses to form a connection with people and inspire them to engage in ocean conservation. I've hosted several charity fundraisers for conservation groups that have raised thousands of dollars thanks to my dedicated followers who absolutely love animals, wildlife, and the environment.

Orcas are eating the livers of great white sharks. But why do orcas only eat shark liver? How are killer whales able to extract the liver with surgical precision? How do we know some killer whales only eat shark livers? A marine biologist explains.

Offshore orcas live out in the deep waters of the North Pacific where studying them is challenging. Necropsies on killer whale carcasses provided the first clues that these orcas preyed on sharks. This was confirmed when a group of researchers encountered a pod of offshore killer whales near the islands of Haida Gwaii. Chunks of tissue began rising to the surface along with a sheen of oil. Researchers collected as many samples as they could and found the tissue and oil came from shark livers.
On the other side of the world, a pod of killer whales showed up in False Bay, South Africa. Up until 2015, False Bay was known for its large population of great white sharks who were world famous for attacking fur seals with enough force and explosive energy to throw their entire bodies out of the water. Until the killer whales showed up. Specifically, the killer whale brothers Port and Starboard. Shortly after these Port and Starboard killer whales appeared, great white sharks began washing ashore with their livers seemingly surgically removed.

Karen's: the animal should be in the wild not captivity Otter: Bìitch shut up and mind ya business, don't ruin this for me 😂😂
I would rather ask: discussing that subject seems new to us public, but it may be an orca habit since long, I can imagine… Anyway, I wonder how the sharks know that there’s been an attack on one of their similar, and therefore leave the area? Smell? Do they emit « dying sounds »?

I’m a lobster fisherman or menhaden fisherman but we ain’t just mad about those wright wales we’re mad at the fact about how many regulations they’ve put on us in the last 10-15 years but up in Canada they have a lot less regulations and those regulations are killing our industry our industry is dying
As someone who has dual US and Canadian citizenship, I find it sad that both US and Canadian fisheries feel like the other side has less regulations and is harming each other's industry. Canada, for example, prohibits summer fishing at precisely the same time that US lobster season hits a high. On the other hand, US fishermen feel they are unfairly limited by regulations that cap the size of lobsters they can keep. But then again, Canadian fishermen can only use 375 traps on a single license compared to 800 used by US fishermen. The truth is all North American fisheries (US, Canadian, and Mexican) feel threatened for a variety of reasons. Global warming is decimating the snow crab populations of Alaska. Dams on west coast rivers are closing the salmon fisheries. And, as I mentioned in the video, stricter regulations intended to protect critically endangered animals threaten both US and Canadian lobster fisheries. There is not an easy solution, which I tried to stress in this video (maybe I should have done a better job), because as you know... these fisheries employ and sustain thousands of families. It is my hope that the lobster fisheries receive the same government funded disaster relief that the Alaskan snow crab fisheries received.
@@KPassionate also why do they keep taking out dams with fish ladders in Maine and or New England because fish ladders from seems really help the fish get through without current, slowing and stopping them in they’re path to reproduce and repopulate populations of Aliwives
Because recent studies have found that engineered fish ladders have not performed up to everyone's expectation and are largely ineffective. [1] e360.yale.edu/features/blocked_migration_fish_ladders_on_us_dams_are_not_effective
Please don't mistake my position. I love lobster and I do recognize the importance of this commercial industry and the strong familial ties it has in New England (I lived in Connecticut for a time). But we also need to protect the endangered right whales who are on the brink of extinction. My hope is that we can find a balance that allows for sustainable fisheries and the preservation of important wildlife. That solution won't be easy but it is possible if we work together.
China stealing what i fight for at the buffet
You know when there’s a content warning what comes next is about to be some badass shit. Great video.
Hi A Washingtonian here 🙂 do you know why there fins are collapsed?
Their dorsal fins are made of fibrous connective tissue, with no bone, cartilage, or muscle to hold them up. We don't 100% know why dorsal fins collapse but there is evidence that it is genetic.
Похож на того китайца дольнобойщика каторый всегда ест в фуре и бьет в барабан 😂😅😅

Ty for this vid. I stumbled across it n found it to b the most informative vid I've ever seen on CZcams. Plz plz keep em coming. Im now a subscriber
That is an incredibly compliment, thank you! Will do!
I am happy to see the rebound of whales on the Salish Sea, Orcas, Humpbacks and Grey whales, we are seeing them further up the sounds, and also Pacific white sided dolphins made an appearance for the first time in 40 years up Indian Arm. great to see , also first video of yours i watched, i like how well you speak and no dribble, all info, i subscribed , i also agree, these punk Orcas are playing , if someone fell in during play time what would happen ? would they play with the person or just investigate..... they are so smart , i don't think we actually know how smart they really are
Im watching animal shows virtually all my life. I go back to the Walt Disney True Life adventures from the '60s & '70s... I remember Marty Stouffer's Wild America series from the 70s and 80s-- not to mention the BBC's original Nature series with David Attenborough... This 9-minute snippet about the many different subsets of killer whales, along with how they predate great white by first inducing tonic immobility-- with footage included, no less, was the best spent 9 minutes in my career watching "nature" programming... Keep up the great work KP!!!!
Thank you so much for such an incredible compliment. I really appreciate it and I'm glad you enjoyed the video!
What a great video! Subscribed 👍

take, for instance: ✨seals✨
You know not everyone is as scared to be around wild animals. And most the people who do, know how dangerous it can be just as much as you. But staying calm and respectful towards the animal makes them able to do what others can’t.
Wouldn’t there be a lot of bigger predators around that might take a chomp?
Orcas make the best bouncers.
