    Thank you for the great review! I made a DIY version of this and got about 15db volume reduction. However, I’ve found 2 issues with it. First, strangely enough I still feel a tiny amount of back pressure(sort of like the feeling when you turn on the noise canceling headphones)maybe due to my tube changing the overall standing wave around the bell, or is the sound reduction causing me to overblow. Secondly, I feel that my tube cuts off a lot of the higher frequencies so it sort of beautify my sound. Not ideal if I want to work on my sound. Anyway, I wonder if the real version has the same problems.

    Great review Janis! One question on the Mic setup, what else do you need other than the Shure microphone to get started?

    • @janisporietis
      @janisporietis Před 7 měsíci

      Thanks! You need a male XLR cable for the back of the tube and the other end can be whatever you use, either XLR or TRS(?) jacks - the large headphone looking ones :) If you only want to hear yourself via the mic, then you'll need some sort of an audio interface like a Scarlett 2i2 or if you have some sort of an audio recorder like the Zoom H4n/H5/H6 or something similar from other brands. If you want to record directly, again, you can use an audio recorder and most of the time if you want to record on to a computer, you can use the same recorders as audio interface or once again specialized gear like the afore mentioned Scarlett. I hope this wasn't too confusing and overwhelming.

Maybe one day you'll publish your workaround. I'll look forward to seeing it!

      @janisporietis Před rokem

      @@user-bk8eg6ks8r I didn't even know that they've stopped making the desk mount, but I think that makes sense, because I remember seeing it and it seemed very limited in terms of adjustment, basically the only adjustment was the height of the desk you are using :) I'm simply stacking things under mine and to get the correct height/angle and that's it. It looks super janky, but it's solid and works and that's all I need. I'm not crafty, but for someone who is, it wouldn't be a problem to replace the mount that's on the tube with something else that's adjustable.

      @@user-bk8eg6ks8r Oh, I totally understand what you're saying regarding the breathing. I'm just too lazy and this way during some small rests I can do something on the computer while not changing my position :) I remember them having a tube that fits the flugel and initally I was thinking of getting it, but I realized that I don't play enough on the flugel to get that tube, because then I would lose some of the sound dampening due to the larger diameter of the opening.

I made some videos with that and it was fine, but obvisouly I'd rather use a ribbon mic or a large-diaphragm cardoid. Does it concern you when you practice or are you making recordings?

    When practicing in a dead room, or with a mute, just because the way you hear yourself differently, you are adapting the way you play, for exemple blowing more than you should. I guess this problem is even more present with the MUTE-TUBE. What do you think about this issue ?

      !!! I accidentally replied from an old account of mine, sorry !!! To begin with, in my opinion, the best way to practice is without any practice mutes or tubes. If we compare a mute vs the tube, the tube wins by far, because there is no backpressure, the rest is up to the player. By that I mean, it depends of the level of the player, because a more experienced player will react less than a novice. My thoughts are that long-term practicing with a practice mute will definitely get you in trouble :)

      @@janisporietis "My thoughts are that long-term practicing with a practice mute will definitely get you in trouble" did you mean practice tube or practice mute specifically? I'm a novice and tried dabbling with the Yamaha Silent Brass, though my teacher advised against it so now I'm torn between practicing half-anxious with mid volume or to get myself the Mute Tube soon (OR, perhaps, to get over the anxious part and go all the way in my apartment :D)

      @@krzemian I meant a practice mute of any brand specifically. For short burst on a tour with an orchestra is fine, but definitely not a long-term everyday thing. Try to find a solution so you don't need to be half-anxious, because I feel like that feeling gets you into even more trouble. Stay loud...I mean, stay safe!!! :)

      @@janisporietis I can definitely relate with that. Though I'm just a beginner, I saw a relatively massive improvement over the span of a couple of days where I was able to practice full on in a basement vs my regular half-hearted neighbour-aware apartment practice :D

    Good review. I gave up playing years ago purely because I couldn't practice in my new home and remain on friendly terms with my neighbors. I've just bought one of these online based on your review!! Looking forward to it arriving.

    • @janisporietis
      @janisporietis Před 2 lety

      That is a good question to which unfortunately I don't have a good answer, however, my speculation is that it should either be the same or differ just ever so slightly since the only difference is the lenght of the tube because of the microphone placement. The build quality and materials are the same. I hope this helps to clear up some confusion. I haven't been on their website for a while, but I think they have the numbers there.

      @@janisporietis I would love to know who your favourite composer would be. I only listen to classical music (being a music scholar), and prefer 20th century music for its impressionistic and minimalistic qualities. However, I also love baroque music, especially music by Corelli, Buxtehude, Gluck and Vivaldi. It's hard to decide, I would put it something like this: 1) Alexander Scriabin 2) Karol Szymanowski 3) Jean Sibelius 4) Arcangelo Corelli 5) Dietrich Buxtehude

      @@DanielRoyce Terribly sorry for my late reply... I don't have a clear winner from any time period. My taste really is across the board starting from medieval music to contemporary. Glass, Adams, Stravinsky, Shostakovich, Mahler, Brahms Mozart Vivaldi, Haydn, Scriabin, Corelli, Spiegel and lots more have something that I really enjoy, even if it is a passage of few bars or just a unique chord change. For me it is very rare to find a piece that I would appreciate from top to bottom. If it touches me in a certain way, I'm sold. However I do find myself listening to jazz/blues way more often than anything else and that includes pop/rock music. Don Ellis, Buena Vista Social Club, Arturo Sandoval, Lee Morgan, Terence Blanchard, GRP etc.
