Today, I want to address a dangerously misguided vocal technique that’s been circulating recently, the terrible thing is that you’ll know the subject just by seeing the 8 red flags… 🙄
This isn’t a joke; it’s a serious issue. Let’s break it down on the comments:
1. Fill yourself with air to the maximum capacity.
This sounds like a recipe for hyperventilation. Proper singing requires controlled, steady breath, not overfilling your lungs.
2. Stop the air under your vocal cords.
This is physically impossible and harmful. The air must pass through your vocal cords to create sound.
3. During singing, do not let the air pass through the cords but stop it under and let it vibrate.
Sound production requires airflow through the vocal cords. Blocking air will cause strain and potential damage.
4. Push with your stomach as hard as you can.
Pushing excessively can cause severe abdominal and vocal strain. Singing should involve controlled, relaxed diaphragmatic breathing.
5. Do not engage your intercostal muscles.
Engaging intercostal muscles is crucial for proper breath support. Ignoring them can lead to poor breath control and vocal issues.
6. Push the air with your stomach and then through your vocal cords without letting it pass.
Again, this is physically impossible and harmful. Air must flow through the vocal cords to produce sound.
7. Do not use your mouth or lips when singing.
This contradicts basic vocal production principles. Mouth and lip movements shape sound and articulation.
8. Vowels are formed in your larynx.
Vowels are shaped by the mouth, tongue, and lips, not just the larynx.
Historical Greats Misguided?
Claiming that legendary singers like Pavarotti, Enrico Caruso, Montserrat Caballé, and others were wrong is absurd. These artists followed time-tested techniques based on anatomy and physiology.
