Reading Bootcamp 10 Day Phonics Program: Level 4, Lesson 8 - Sounds of OW #reading #phonics
This ten lesson phonics bootcamp was designed to help struggling readers. The most common sounds are introduced early, and this program only presents words where every single sound has been covered. This is to help students avoid guessing and to gain confidence.

Did you know that a high percent of prison inmates are functionally illiterate? Many of our school systems are failing to teach most students how to read at the level needed to succeed in high school, vocational training, and college.
You can use my videos to help you teach your children how to read, even if your school never taught you phonics. Best of all, you won't have to pay a tutor outrageous rates. All you need is the willingness to try and patience.

    I have to admit I'm quite disappointed. You mentioned having 7 to 9 levels with 10 lessons per level, totaling 70 to 90 videos. This leaves me puzzled. Why would you call it a "10 Day Reading Bootcamp" when it's clearly not meant to be completed in 10 days? I don't want to undermine your efforts or seem unappreciative, but the title "10 Day Bootcamp" was what initially drew me to your videos, and now I feel misled.

    good explanation. I'd suggest simpler words. Blatant?!, Not an everyday most used words. Not criticizing, If you want to reach the largest possible views just simplify. Thanks.

      You're right. I probably should simplify the vocabulary for younger students and English language learners.

    There is only one syllabication rule: Divided syllables, whether spoken or written, must be phonetic and they match each other in a one-to-one manner. Thus all of the video's syllabification rules are exercises in futility.

    Wouldn’t dividing before the “n” in manual make the “a” in the first syllable say its long sound? Why isn’t it man-u-al? I love your videos. I just don’t understand this choice. Thanks.

    • @OneMinuteReadingTutor
      @OneMinuteReadingTutor Před 2 měsíci

      I think I didn't explain this very well in the video, and the dictionary does divide it the way you suggested. I divided it this way for reading (not dictionary) purposes based on Rule 2 (divide after a vowel before a single consonant). When dividing words this way, we try the vowel's long sound first, but if it doesn't make a word we recognize, then we try the short sounds or schwas. (This is covered in more detail in the Accented Syllables video. czcams.com/video/Vet-7iDCo48/video.html) These rules aren't like math rules, where they always work. They're intended to be guidelines to give readers a place to start with tackling a long word. Personally I'd rather have my kids make a reasonable, but incorrect, phonetic pronunciation attempt than just give up and not try because they freeze when they see a very long word. I'm glad you like the videos, and feel free to post again if there's something else unclear or some other way I can help you.

    What I'm trying to ask is how to handle the syllabication of schwa vowels? ex . violin vi-o- lin or vi-ol-in / thermometer ther-mom - e-- ter or ther-mom-et-er ?

    • @OneMinuteReadingTutor
      @OneMinuteReadingTutor Před 5 měsíci

      Violin gets divided as vi-o-lin. (See rule 5 about dividing between certain vowels. czcams.com/video/2zksLU6IrRA/video.html)

    • @OneMinuteReadingTutor
      @OneMinuteReadingTutor Před 5 měsíci

      The dictionary shows thermometer as ther-mom-e-ter. Using the 8 rules in my bootcamp, it would be ther-mo-me-ter. 1. Divide between the R and the M using rule 1 (divide between consonants) 2. Notice that root word of "meter," so divide after the O before that word using rule 3 (divide between words) or rule 6 (divide after prefixes). 3. In "meter" divide after the E before the T using rule 2. The purpose of the 8 rules in the Syllable Division Bootcamp is for giving people an idea of how to tackle reading long words they're unfamiliar with. The rules don't always work (and won't always divide things the way a dictionary does), but they are meant as a starting place. They are meant to give people the confidence to try to sound words out rather than guessing wildly. Don't stress out if they don't always work.

    • @OneMinuteReadingTutor
      @OneMinuteReadingTutor Před 5 měsíci

      I'll eventually add some videos focused more on schwas (stressed/unstressed syllables). The schwas don't really change the division of the words, just how the vowels are pronounced.

    Do you know maximal onset rule, the syllable usually divide after vowel in CVC pattern? Priority beginning the second syllable with a consonant, for example: many --> /ˈme.ni/, not /ˈmen.i/
