Who's Training Who, Creating Positive Associations - Pistol's Progress LIVE #14
I was wondering if you could please answer this question. I have a dash to cash horse who has been doing great. However, in the middle of the summer he sort have just stopped performing. Sometimes he won’t go at all or sometimes he will do two events and be done. It frustrates me because he could be a 1D horse once I figure out his problem. My dad won’t get a vet check cuz he thinks he is just testing me so idk. What should I do?
Hi Brooke, while there are likely some ways you can help address this through training, the first area to look close at is always physical reasons for the behaviors you're seeing. It's quite possible there could be soreness that comes up when competing (but not necessarily lameness), that really feels even worse after that first run, or there could be stomach discomfort due to stress (which often contributes to gate problems, etc.). A thorough exam with a good performance Vet. is always the first step when troubleshooting something like this. Beyond that, if I can be more help through Video Coaching, please keep that in mind. Here's a link to learn more about the options to "Ride with Me" -> www.barrelracingtips.com/ride-with-barrel-racer-heather-smith/
This sounds amazing and I will definitely try it my next riding time! Can you do a video of shoulder control? That would help me a lot!
My horse doesn’t run as fast as I know she can.. is there anything I can do for this?
Could be pain, check for soreness and get a chiropractor out! Same thing happened with my barrel mare and after an adjustment, she opened up
I have before but she also has a swayback
Bella & Nina that could be another reason but that depends on how severe the sway back is. If it’s not bad, I’d try breezing her in a big field to open her stride up
Is it possible that the ground may be to hard and they refuse because they cant dig into the ground..?
Very helpful thank you! I have the photonic light but was not doing the stretches, I'll begin to incorporate this! Thanks!
Where's the run posted??
I didn't do another video to wrap up the series with the run, but did post updates of that weekend on social media. Here are the links from Instagram where I shared how it went + a video... instagram.com/p/BnMSK7FF0bW/?igshid=1hyyg6o6hnvmj instagram.com/p/BnMpwPYhg66/?igshid=1ljamr4hel2jw instagram.com/p/BnPc-WLBI2p/?igshid=1xfg9noyj456l instagram.com/p/BnWHeaqBtiB/?igshid=rxosiiq7s4pe
This is perfect! I'm having thr same problem with my palomino Sammie. She just turned 8 and I havent been riding her for quite a while. My horse was a training for 30 days but I don't think that was enough. She's gets very hot when it comes to running barrles which makes it harder to teach her the proper way to complete barrels. She knows leg pressure and can also neck rein. I'm thinking she just needs more trotting work to build more muscle I'm not sure though.
I can’t keep my hat on to save my life
In this video we learned that usually it’s a deeper problem than just the gate. - Josie and Elyse Sabin
What saddle is that?
This is very helpful!
Love the way you explain it with drawing , flour, and markers.
I use the Tampon trick , it works well, then I will also use hairspray to secure my hat.
wish i knew these, b4 loosing them...:(
see my gelding knows all the softening ques but ones he gets into a trot or a canter and forgets all of it. any tips on a hot headed and hard mouthed horse? right now i ride him in a basic Argentine dog bone with a roller. i would like to stick with the dog bone style as hes a stiff horse and needs like type of i guess you could say release. Thanks!
Weather stripping worked for me. Thanks for the advice
I heard that you emailed a therapy modalities benefit list. I only just found your channel. Is there somewhere I could find this list? I have only used stretching, vibration plate ( wish I owned one 😔) chiropractic and magna wave. Thank you and God bless.

Barrel Racing Tips Thanks for your quick reply. I will sign up right away. That is a great deal on the Equivibe. I hope someday to have the budget for one of my own, thanks! God bless!
Thank you for this! My horse and I seriously did this yesterday at a race and we had so much extra time going too long to our first barrel. 🤦
Happy to share Caitlin! ;)
Just curious what are the benefits to the red lights, have you had any problems and had it resolved with them? Thanks!
There aren't many conditions that light therapy can't help with, and it certainly played a big part in Dot Com's successful comeback from a tendon tear. We use our Photonic Health lights regularly to stimulate acupoints and then RevitaVet pads as needed wherever each horse could use some extra TLC. Here's a description of the benefits of red light therapy: Healthy cells vibrate at about 660 nanometers, but when injury or illness occurs, the vibration level in the affected cells goes down. Increasing the vibration with red light therapy accelerates the mitochondria within the cell, which increases ATP production (Adenosine Triphosphate - a molecule in cells for storing and transporting energy). As this happens, signals are sent to the brain to increase cellular regeneration, release endorphins (a natural pain reliever), serotonin, anti-inflammatory enzymes, and suppress enzymes that create swelling, redness, and pain. Red light therapy increases lymphatic drainage and circulation and strengthens anti-viral properties by increasing antibody production in the bloodstream. It also relaxes tight muscles and quickly releases muscle spasms and cramps, as well as improves the structure of tendons, bones, skin and cartilage by increasing collagen production.
Oh okay that’s really cool technology, thanks for answering! Now I see what it’s for:)
First view!!!!!!!! Pistle is pretty
O am so happy you are finally uploaded videos!!!!!!!!
I totally agree with the physical problem I had no idea why my horse was refusing to turn the first barrel so we called a chiropractor andf turns out he needed to get his right shoulder re adjusted but now I am basically retraining him on the pattern
So smart of you to resolve those physical issues and make sure the education/emotional aspect is taken care of too - well done Aizlynn!
Love this video thank you for explaining how to adjust your headstall and how the bit should sit in the mouth. Too many want to have a bunch of wrinkles (making the horse"smile") when they really don't need it.
Yes, getting the 'wrinkles' was a long-held tradition but a bit that's too tight (snaffle especially) can't work to it's maximum effectiveness if the horse can't feel the weight of the reins pick up and release as much, which is inhibited if the bit is always drawn up tight to the corners of their mouth.
Thank you so much for this. Please make more of these?
What type of double sided tape do you recommend?
Whatever is available in the office supply dept. of your local store works, but double-side carpet tape could also be a more heavy duty option.
A fantastic video. I will be sharing this with a young barrel racer
Thanks Ruth!
I have a green barrel horse and he likes to go wide on the first barrel but will turn it, hit he fence and run off, or go wide. On his second barrel he likes to drop his shoulder but when i do drills on him, he get frustrated easily so what should do I, any tips?
Hi Emily, you can search for 'second barrel' at BarrelRacingTips.com and also check out this post on correcting wide turns -> www.barrelracingtips.com/how-to-fix-a-wide-turn-on-the-barrels/
My horse blows around the first anywhere I go but then has an amazing second and third. What are some drills to do that will help him have a first barrel turn like his second and third?
Hi Madison, you can get five of my best first barrel exercises for FREE at -> bit.ly/FirstBarrelFixes. Also search for "first barrel" at BarrelRacingTips.com for even more helpful articles and videos. ;)
Barrel Racing Tips thank you!
My horse turns the first barrel GREAT in practice but WILL NOT go around the first barrel in competition. This last race, I took her in the arena SLOW and she still refused. I previously got her hocks injected. I don't know what to do. I have gotten help from various people and have spent so much time.
You'll want to treat this similar to a gate problem, this post will offer some insights! -> www.barrelracingtips.com/seven-tips-to-solve-gate-problems-for-good
I read and watched the video. I have scheduled a vet exam... the thing is, she does great even in time onlys. Then, I go to make a run and she refuses to turn even if I see saw her a little bit and really sit. I want to cry. UGH!
These symptoms are indicators of things being overlooked in one or more of three foundational areas - mental (education), physical and emotional. It's really important that we prioritize our horse's well being and not allow our own emotions to become a factor - problems are an opportunity to learn! If you'd like more in-depth help, keep my video coaching in mind. Details are available on the RIDE WITH ME page at www.BarrelRacingTips.com.
I’m having a problem with my horse stopping fast. I know that everyone tells me ground work but I have done a tone of ground work you say woah and she stops on a dime put a saddle on her and a rider.. yeah it’s a different story. Any advice you could give me the better
Does it annoy your face to have a string on your have that holds it around you head
This helped so much!!!!
What kind of bit would you recommend for a Tennessee Walker that barrel races?
My horse just is not running she is slow and is not trying to run. Please help!!!
Hi Julie, this video will provide a good start to troubleshooting that problem! -> czcams.com/video/dbEWwdTk1mI/video.html
My hats, I wear an outback type, but the principle is the same; they fit very well and rarely fall off unless there's a really blustery wind system. So not wanting stampede strings on all the time I just rigged up a clip on clip off system: i.imgur.com/3o6ExoF.png Real simple, so my retaining string goes into a pocket when it's not clipped onto the jump ring installed on the cotter pins in the hat.
How do you stop your horse from ducking the barrel
The key is removing the reason they don't want to turn to begin with and ensuring that it's not allowed to happen again, but especially not repeatedly. The same ideas apply to ducking as running up the wall, there can be a variety of causes but the problem (therefore the solution) is basically the same. The starting point is always thoroughly resolving or ruling out physical issues.
Hey when I'm barrel racing, I got my first and the third barrel right and it's not running to my second from the first. It's my second running to my third is what I need to work on lol do you have any advice.
Hi Jaymee, if your horse isn't staying straight between the 2nd and 3rd barrel, this post will be helpful -> www.barrelracingtips.com/two-contradictory-tips-to-be-straight-and-fast-between-barrels If your horse isn't quite running as fast as you know he can, check out the Need for Speed chapter in my book, 'The Next 50 Barrel Racing Exercises for Precision on the Pattern,' available (with FREE gifts) at -> www.50BarrelRacingExercises.com.
Hi, I've been barrel racing for about 12 years, I got an all around horse 4 years ago. When I lope to the right, she uses the left lead. My dad says it's because she is a rope horse. How can I fix this?
Hi Brooklyn, most important when it comes to helping our horse pick up the correct lead, is making sure we can yield there hips. This will help -> www.barrelracingtips.com/start-strong-to-finish-fast-catch-the-correct-lead-for-a-stress-free-alley-set-up-every-time
Whoo hoo new vid!!!
I love your videos!!
Also is this better than cold therapy
Yes, this is significantly more powerful than cold therapy, which temporarily reduces heat and inflammation, and often at only the skin level without penetrating deeper tissues. Microcurrent can restore function and heal even old injuries, so it's a great option for helping our horses continue to feel their best under the demands of hauling and performing. Cold therapy has it's place, and I use that as well - such as by applying ice boots after a ride or run. We do Microcurrent treatments a couple times a week, or as needed for our performance horses!
What set is this?
This device is called The Best Vet III from Matrix Therapy Products - www.TherapyProducts.net.
I have a questions, My horse uses a snaffle bit. But she jerks her head when going around the barrels. I don't use spirs. But when I use my legs she doesn't listen. I might be giving her mixed signals, so I try to only make one movement at a time. But when I'm going around the barrels. Since I only make one movement. It ends up being late. So she runs into the barrel of doesn't turn in time. Any suggestions..?
See my videos on "fights the first barrel" and bits for the "hard to please horse," you can search these topics at www.BarrelRacingTips.com. In these cases, it's not about the bit, it's more about the way we've prepared and educated our horses to respond to our hands and what we ask. ;)
•Fawni• I would try a French link to see if that helps!
my horse has the exact same markings that your has.
My horse has tended to be opposite she is staying almost too close to the barrel, she keeps her head tilted in towards the barrel too long instead of taking off to the second barrel. any suggestions?
Ashley, search for my "wide turns" post at BarrelRacingTips.com, it will offer insight for turns that are too tight as well. In general, you'll want to use your hands less and your body language and focus more to guide your horse.
My name is Aubrey and my barrel horse, Slick has troubles at the gates too. however, he loves barrels and when it is our turn he gets so excited he freezes up and cannot go in the gate calmly. I was wondering if there is something I could do to help him calm down when going in the gate. He usually does not rear he just freezes and sometimes hops all the way in. He loves barrels and it is not a huge issue, I just would like to fix this.
To "unlock" a horse with frozen feet, I usually turn them sideways and then around in a circle to get momentum going again so they spend as little time as possible in that "stuck" mode... but the most important thing is addressing the root cause for why they are freezing and not responding.
can you elaborate on how the bobby pins are in your hat? I can't see them well enough to know how im supposed to put them in
One end is stuck up between the hat and the sewn on inner lining, and the other end goes into your hair. Sometimes I get them started before I put my hat on. With some hats they can be a little hard to get in, but once they are started through the stitching, they usually push right up.
My horse has amazing turns now but how can I make her faster?
Daisy, my FREE Speed Guide offered with purchase of my book, Secrets to Barrel Racing Success is a good place to start. Also search for "speed" in the upper right corner at www.BarrelRacingTips.com.
Hi I have been barrel racing for about 10 months now and my horse has started to "stop" at barrels and turn on the forehand. Do I just need to practice wide and get smaller? I would love to get your opinion! Thanks!
