Sharpening woodturning tools - a personal journey
In this video I show how I sharpen my woodturning tools. I demonstrate the different sharpening systems I have used over the years and share my experience. I demonstrate how to sharpen gouges, how to sharpen skew chisel and more. I demonstrate how to sharpen on a wet stone sharpening system as well as a bench grinder. If you are a beginner woodturner this video can help you avoid a few of the mistakes I made when sharpening woodturning tools.
Machines I use in this video are:
I´m not sponsored my Tormek but I did get a discount on the T8 black 50 year anniversery edition so I flagged this video as promotion. My opinions in the video are not directed by Tormek.

    Oh, I thought the outer panels would be more spherical, so the flask could hold more liquid. Nice technique by the way. And for the record, ALL two part epoxies are food safe once fully cured. Another way to make it waterproof is to simply glue the panels on with epoxy, then when cured, melt some beeswax and pour it in. Fill it right up and dump it out immediately. That will leave a nice coating of wax on the inside.

    Lovely share. Most of us do and did suffer from the same bowl (etc) gouge's sharpening issues. It is really time to to get a proper wet stone sharpener even if just using to sharpen those finger nail ,bowl,spindle gouge shaped tools . Couple of times my mood was off when I could not find the right angle to sharpen my fingernail gouge on a standard grinder 😢 As a full time joiner, I always wanted to learn those sharpening technics ,which you can only practice if you get a proper grinder. Thanks for sharing!

    The other way I've seen the drilling done is to put the jacobs chuck into the headstock. put a live center in the tailstock, and pinch the work between the drill bit and the tailstock. start the lathe (hold the work piece with one hand), and advance the tailstock to drive the work piece onto the spinning drill bit.

    I went through similar journey bu in the middle i was using the Tormek knockoff from Record Power. Apart from all the stuff you mention the issue i had was constantly adjust all the jigs to accomodate for the wheel wear. I eventually settled on Robert Sorby Pro Edge i extremely happy with it and i havent looked back since.

  • @krperry2007
    @krperry2007 Před 2 měsíci

    I bought the Jet knock-off version of the Tormek - same issues. The stone is out of round and the bowl gouge jig is not as accurate and setup instructions are missing.

    • @nordicturning
      @nordicturning Před 2 měsíci

      Did you end up buying the Tormek machine? It seems a lot of people who try the knock-offs end up getting the real deal eventually.

    • @krperry2007
      @krperry2007 Před 2 měsíci

      No, I’ll get by with it for awhile. I think I would go with the 1750 rpm dry cbn wheels next. I did get some wheel dressing tools for cheap and with time I can keep it fairly flat , but out of round is not too bad since it goes so slow.

      I use cbn wheels with a slow speed grinder and the kodiak sharpening system. Total cost was around $700 US. I did look at tormek but the cost is hard to justify. I feel I get very good results with the kodiak system.
