    The 30 seems a good size. I was comparing between the 30 and 40 for surf fishing but seeing the 40 beside the 30, it seems like the 40 is too big?

    • @OXTackle
      @OXTackle Před 6 měsíci

      I sell a lot of fishing gear in the shop and for me , I think the size is personal. I prefer to balance the rods I am using with the weight of the reel, to give a set up that is less tip heavy as I gain a lot more sensitivity in bite detection and less wrist fatigue set up that way. I would also consider the thickness/weight/capacity of the line for surf fishing depending on whether I was trying to distance cast lighter line over sand, or use heavier line to combat heavy surf or rough seabed conditions. Either way, you should enjoy the reel as they are pretty epic.

      @OXTackle Před 3 lety

      The Seagate was a nice enough reel, but they are not really in the same league. I have three older Saltist's that range from 7 to 11 years old and the are running faultlessly. When you purchase a Saltist you are buying a reel that can last decades

    • @andrewmorke
      @andrewmorke Před 3 lety

      @@OXTackle I appreciate that information. The black and blue Saltist are easily one of the most beautiful reels out there too. I just can't get over how well the centrifugal drag works on my Seagate 50H. The bigger Penn reels are horrible casters -- braking system is too feeble -- whereas the Seagate belts out big baits and 8 oz sinkers smoothly and controllably. The Saltist must be a treat to own.

    • @OXTackle
      @OXTackle Před 3 lety

      @@andrewmorke You're on to something there with your Seagate. For me, no matter how good the cast control and free spool mechanisms are on a reel from any manufacturer, the over riding factor for successful long distance casting with an overhead or multiplier reel, is the weight and diameter of the spool. These two factors combine to create the energy or inertia that is created when the spool goes from zero to full speed at the time of release during the cast. The taller and heavier the spool, the longer it takes for its inertia to be controlled, and the more rapidly the item being cast slows down allowing for more line to be released from the reel than is being drawn through the rod, leading to backlash. Your Seagate has a great weight to diameter ratio for it's spool, making it a bit of a casting weapon.

      I agree Dixon. The performance of my Slammer drags are up there with my Saltiga drags and the carbontex drag upgrades we offer in store. I think the point of the Clash is light performance, offering a blend of good drags, a light stiff body and pretty nice styling. While it is always my intention to put new reels through there paces with solid fish, this particular fight was a brutal test for such a small reel, due to the amount of bullying it took to stop the fish getting down to the reef in such shallow water, high current and heavy wind. I feel confident that most Penn folks are going to enjoy fishing with the new clash reels. Thanks for taking the time to comment on the vid. Cheers. OX

    Look at all the Daiwa fanboys here. I'm never into any specific brands because various brands make better gear for different forms of fishing and techniques. I will admit the higher end spin reels Daiwa shines, but the bottom to mid end Daiwa is overpriced barring the BG. I have a Stella 20k, Expedition 5500H, Dogfight 8000, Saragosa 10K and 20K, Biomaster 10k, Catalina 6500, BG 6500, Fin Nor Lethal 100 and Quantum Cabo 120PTSE. People need to bear in mind that Daiwa customer service is poor compared to Shimano. Magsealed reels are more sensitive to service and maintain and Daiwa don't sell the ferro fluid. Not only do the reels cost more but service is also more expensive and take much longer to get your reel back. Shimano also make great products and they're number one in customer service. In regards to rods, I prefer Daiwa especially for surf but for offshore boat rods Shimano takes the cake. There are also a plethora of other rod-making companies out there that blow both Shimano and Daiwa out of the water. Some brands to consider are Blue Marlin, Century, Zziplex, Zenaq, Temple Reef, Assassin, CTS etc. Only the idiots of this world stick to one brand name beause they're ignorant and uneducated of other high-performance brands.

      Thanks for you comments mate. As I have stated in other reply's on this video, all brands have some good and some not so good reels/rods. As a serviceman however, Daiwa reels tend to suffer far less corrosion issues than most other brands. As for a person being ignorant for favoring one brand, I prefer to look at it as they are passionate about one brand and there is nothing wrong with that as far as I can tell. As for mag seal being sensitive to service, I'm not sure where you get that info. I have found servicing and replacing Mag seal to be a cake walk and there are very good Ferro fluids available from many sources that do the job nicely. Thanks for watching the video. So I am not sure what to run? all my reels apart from my smaller softbait reels all have way more drag than 6kg's. Is that why you say let the fish run heaps? It's my first really thin jig rod. Usually running things like a Fin nor Troppo stick with a Penn slammer or Daiwa saltist on 50 to 80lb braid. What would you recommend reel and braid wise? I have a mega arsenal of reels and lines. Would a smaller soft bait reel like my Okuma Ceymar C40 with 30lb Daiwa J braid be good? or go a Saltist 4500 with 50lb? sorry to ask, you just seem to know your shit. Tight Lines. Dave

      I am running 30lb or 15kg Saltiga j braid on the Saltiga 3500. The rule of thumb to use in general is that your drag should be set at 1/3 of your lines breaking strain. To get the best out of you gear this should be around 2/3 of your rods max drag load. It is important to remember that the max drag load for the rod is only realistic at a 90 deg bend, that is with your rod at not much over 180 deg or parallel to the water. The higher you lift the lighter the pressure the rod can take and in general, the more expensive rods are built out of higher density carbon and so will tolerate a lot less high sticking. I am currently running a penn conflict with 10lb original fireline on the rod (it looks sharp) and have set it at 4 kg of drag. This is actually quite a lot and it gets the rod to bend deeply but still allows for a few slow reactions from me. I am eyeing up the new Daiwa Nero 3000 Mag seal for it as is sooo light and smooth (and also looks sharp on the rod.... Black on black does it for me :-) ), and I would run that with 10lb or 14lb Berkley original fireline or 20lb Daiwa J braid. I personally have a preference for slightly stiffer braids on my smaller spin sets but I like using depth finding braid to target mid water fish more accurately. If you find yourself getting pushed around by a kingi then you can either straiten the rod and slowly apply more pressure, or back the drag off and confuse them. I personally have the most success with the second strategy . All in all a 3000-4000 size reel with around 7 kg of max efficient drag should balance up nicely. Have fun with it mate. Tight lines. OX

      The reel has been sold to another fisherman who still uses it regularly. It has yet to be re serviced almost two and a half years later but we did replace the corroded bail wire but it still has the original handle

      Hi Armando. I am a Daiwa man myself but it is important to remember that the Stella and several other reels are still very good reels and have been responsible for some monster catches. It is good to know that there is a reason your Daiwa costs you more to purchase though.

    Hi OxTackle, I am a colleague of Catherine Leas and I am trying to get together some of the footage of orca feeding on dolphins in the HG considering it is such a rare event! Is there an email address I can contact you at? Cheers, Krista

    Hiya, what date was this on? The whale watch boat I worked for witnessed presumably the same group hunting common dolphins a couple of days ago. This is all very interesting!

      +Catherine Lea. Hi Catherine. This was filmed on Sunday 27th of September, East of Tiritiri matangi. We were out on Tuesday as well and Saw the Whale watch boat following the Orca and common dolphins, Gannets etc. I was surprised to see the bottle nose being pursued as it looked to be around 2.5m long and quite large. A small pod had come up to us earlier while we were drift fishing and hung around for two minutes checking us out. I was a bit gutted watching one being hunted down. Hope that helps. OX

      +OXTackle Hey, thanks for the detailed info! That's very interesting to know as the boat has only ever witnessed orca hunting dolphins twice now in it's 15 year history. I am surprised about the bottlenose too, although we know orca are supreme hunters you would think they would just aim for the easier commons!

    • @OXTackle
      @OXTackle Před 9 lety

      +Catherine Lea . Yeah, I know what you mean. We were only sure when we slowed down and paused some of the footage and could see the dolphin more clearly. We also saw a pod of Orca pursuing a Bryde's whale and her calf two years ago in the firth of Thames but got no footage as we aren't allowed to pursue marine mammals. We seem to be lucky in the last week with so many coming to us, although the Orca came way to close for comfort. Thanks for watching the Video. OX

      Wow I saw the same just off the Eastern side of Waiheke/in the Firth two years ago too...5th August 2013 (the first time I saw orca, I remember it well). I wonder if you saw the same event or a different one! And yeah I can imagine, it's pretty difficult to see everything when it's happening so fast but you guys did a really good job of filming. We can ID for sure that it's a bottlenose which is really interesting. :)

      @Letmeoutltd Před 9 lety

      +Catherine Lea That would be very close to the same time. We were east of Kauri point Waiheke, in line with Terahiki Island and the chase continued East into the firth. It was a little to real when we realised what was going down. I always hoped that the calf made it.
