Born and raised in Vancouver area (now a low-income pensioner) insights of living in Calgary for four years... 1. I moved to Calgary for four years - moving back to GVRD next spring IF I can find affordable housing in Burnaby or New West. This is a very big *if* even for shared accommodation 2. I don't dislike the overcast skies and humidity of Vancouver. In fact, I miss both. Calgary is very cold and windy 3. And I am a 'snowbird' spending the coldest months in SE Asia. Still June and September are too cold for me in 'southern' Alberta. I like Calgary for only 2.5 months per year. I spend half my year in the tropics and semi-tropics. Only Medicine hat *might* be tolerable. But then I am living in a remote city 4. The only challenge of Vancouver is MONEY and housing - the two are related. It is expensive, the Honolulu of Canada. 5. I miss seeing Chinese and Punjabi persons. I feel that the Asian demographics of Calgary (Filipino and Vietnamese) are foreign to me. 6. Bus drivers in Calgary stop wherever the heck they want to in the huge bus stops, rather than at the feet of aged passengers (in Vancouver, they are more polite and considerate) 7. Buses are infrequent, stop early and have mostly N-S and circuitous routes rather than the criss-cross of GVRD 8. Buses are used by homeless rather than working poor. *Everyone* drives a car here in Calgary. 9. I loathe driving, parking and the expenses (insurance, maintenance, repairs, storage) of using a vehicle 10. Calgary City keeps the water in swimming pools too cold compared to Coquitlam, BC 11. I moved to Calgary for only two reasons, both finnacial: 11a. provincial top up to pension is three times higher in AB 11b. lower cost of housing (much more true in 2020 than 2024) 12. YVR is a better departure city for Tokyo and Bangkok than YYC in terms of time on a plane. Curiously, sometimes flying from Calgary is cheaper though, especially to India. 13. Compared to 1982-1983 Calgary is no longer drug crime-free. Lots of public use of hard drugs in bus shelters 14. AB is not as socially conservative as SK (I lived in Saskatoon in 1980-1981) and also not as liberal as BC. I find the oil and gas culture disagreeable, neither fish nor fowl, neither traditionally religious as MN and SK nor progressive in sex , drugs and art like BC. I find AB, in a word, *boring* without being charming. But Vancouver is even more woke than Calgary (but not by much) 15. Calgary is not so vegetarian-friendly as Vancouver. Nobody wants a secular vegetarian renter here. 16. Like in GVRD, the Punjabi community is largely religious in nature but is more localized than in GVRD. In the NE instead of Surrey. But in Vancouver Sikhs live in more neighbourhoods. It feels as if South Asians are more ghettoized in Alberta. Plus, it is difficult for an old 'white' man to find a room for rent in Calgary because ads blatantly advertise for Kabayan (overseas Filipinas) and Khalsa Sikhs. Women only, Indian only. I have complained to the Minister of Housing (both federal and provincial and received no action about this illegal discrimination) 17. Ultimately I will probably leave Canada, giving up my residency to live in more homogenous population and lower cost countries such as Turkey, Vietnam and Cambodia. I cannot afford on under 25K p.a. to live in any major metropolitan area and there is no public discussion on immigration, employment and housing. It is all a choosing the lesser of 'evils' when it comes to what city to locate in. Already I am doing so 182 days per year but returning to Canada feels like coming back from a day pass while in prison But it might no longer worth the reduced comfort of remaining in Calgary versus Vancouver. Or Canada itself.

Surrey , first place ? right. Stay out of Vancouver, it has changed so much over the years, you have a hard time to find somewhere safe to go at night, car break ins , gang shootings, its everywhere. House prices will make you a debt slave to the bank. Find somewhere to live.

You once spoke about changing one's expectations. We recently visited Vancouver and came to the realization that we love Kitsilano and Grey Point. We also understand we would never be able to own a house in this area. The appeal to those areas is access to the beach and the shops. Downtown is a 10 minute 99B ride away. and the skytrain to the Waterfront. Moving to Vancouver is not like moving from one Ontario town to another. It's a bit of a reality shock, but I have time. Thank you for these videos, nothing beats boots not he ground, but you save us a lot of research and spark conversation.

Vancouver or Victoria are the places you go to when you have made your money and don’t need more. Twice I have been approached about jobs there, and both times I would have to take about a 40% pay cut versus Calgary (senior management / executive jobs are a lot more lucrative in Cowtown once you get into Oil and Gas). When you factor in the higher house prices it just doesn’t work. I don’t think it’s healthy for Vancouver, it’s not attracting talent, it’s attracting wealth (there is a lot in the world), which is just going to make it worse for regular folks who never get the opportunity unless they were wise enough to buy real estate twenty years ago. Another pet peeve of Vancouver, is in Calgary they spread social services across the city, in Vancouver everything is concentrated in East Hastings. I guess the positive there, is if your kids go off the rails, you will know where to find them, in Canadas slum.

I loved your point related to making friends in Vancouver. I moved here last december from India expecting my life to change as I expose myself to a new part of the world. Unfortunately that hasn't been the case. There is no sense of community here. It still baffles me that we live in a place where we don't even know most times who our neighbours are. This bothered me a lot in the beginning when I tried being social but people wouldn't reciprocate or just show no interest in being friends. Later I realised it stems from 2 major issues. One being the cost of living which you mentioned perfectly in the video. People are just exhausted making enough money to survive to have any social connections. Secondly, I think it's because of mistrust in people caused due to the homeless or addicts in the city. People are just so scared to talk to strangers because they have no idea what the other person might do or need from them. Both these points are fair in their own regard but I just hope the situation gets better with time. It's a beautiful city and living here alone honestly sucks. Anyways, great video ❤

Lived in Coquitlam from 92 to 2008. No doubt Vancouver is beautiful but livability unless ur wealthly I mean wealthy ur screwed. Rent is higher and buying a house is so much higher. My house is worth $550000 in Calgary similar house in Vancouver with the property I have about 1.5 to 2 million to buy. Calgary has a ring road and our traffic is nothing compared to the crap traffic in Vancouver and surrounding areas. Vancouver is the San Francisco of Canada, homelessness etc is brutal in downtown Vancouver. Vancouver has left wing socialist slant. Why don't u mention crime man, Vancouver was a much better place years ago now it's a socialist eutopia

Wow, you really hit this on out of the park. Reduced jump cuts, more b roll, on-screen maps really communicate the huge amount of information much better. This video is timely and highly relevant to us giving us a lot to chew on. Having visited Vancouver and spoken to you, I have crossed North Vancouver, the suburbs connected by bridge such as Deep Cove; and the island off the list. They don’t have the Vancouver feel, the friendliness; they aren’t as walkable; some have steep slopes or feel remote. We visited some other parts of town and keep coming back to Grey Point and Kitsilano. Broadway and west 10th street have a lot of great stores and very walkable. The 99B line and skytrain are close and taken us to where we need quickly; it’s a quick walk to the beach; and so easy to get to the airport when needed. I now see three options: 1. Buy a condo (top floor - low rise): Grey point / Kitsilano 2. Buy a detached home 3. Buy a condo and keep our home in Ontario. This might be a transition option. I appreciate the effort you put into these videos. Combined with annual trips to Vancouver, making a decision will be much easier. This move is about a lifestyle for us, walkability, access to stores and grocery stores. Thanks for taking time out of your busy day to speak with me. One thing to consider when you are putting a lot of text on the screen. Shift the A roll to the right by a third of the screen. In the gap, put a 1/3 background and put your text on that. That way the text isn’t going over your face and it gives you a lot of space for information.

Just getting back from Vancouver, I can say it is a very friendly city. Hoep on the cCanada line with baggage and it is the Bridgeport line, people will go out of their way to let us know we are on the wrong train. There were many other examples of us having a chat in public about which stop to get off, or which train to take and people would offer up the answer. I can't remember all the examples, but I got the sense that people are looking out for each other. Not at all like Toronto which is very cold and people keep to themselves... as far as making friends... I didn't try.. too busy with the family ;)

Victoria is the retirement capital of Canada and when those well off retries pass away their stuff often ends up at Value Village or Salvation Army so there is way higher quality used goods in these stores vs elsewhere.

This is number 1 thing I love about Vancouver! Transportation is not that convenient as in Europe but… this is definitely one of the best transit network in North America!! Car is always traffic, insurance, parking, payments … love to drive only to the mountains

modo sucks. I used for years, but someone who booked the car after me and they bumped the bumper and they blamed me with faulty evidence. They inflated the amount and didn't even fix it. What they do is bank a number of repairs - collecting the full repair cost from everyone. Its a source of income for them

@xerdov You aren't the first to criticize those condo buildings built in the 90s and 2000s...but since then, Vancouver has been on a bit of a tear with some pretty creative architecture (like Vancouver House and the Butterfly Building).
