Hays and dead wife Amelia
From the marvelous TRUE DETECTIVE season 3, we will look at another scene from episode three, that has multiple layers.
In the scene right before this one, we are in the 90's timeline. There we see Roland visiting the father of the kids (in the spine of the season story). It ends with the father asking Roland to join him in a soft prayer. I would say this is a very clever way to get us in the right mood for what is coming. From there we go to the 2015 story line, the scene we are analyzing
In this timeline we have seen detective Hayes tired and depressed, increasingly struggling with his memory. Now alone in his study trying to get a hold of things in the case. Doing that, he recalls his wife Amelia, holding some kind of spiritual lecture. Suddenly Hays sees she is there, in the room, sitting at the wall behind him, close to the door.
She is continuing her lecture, talking about on aging and letting everything go. For Hays at his point in life this is something he is struggling with. He is deeply moved, but does not want to acknowledge what she tells him. She shifts to saying there is something left for him to do, and hints at some kind of secret in the woods, that we haven't heard of before. She comes close and calls on him to finish this.
We are in the final part of episod 3. We know, by the obsession Hays has had in all time lines, that this must the beginning of a new story line. We might know what the aging Hays has been hiding in the woods. Now Hays has got a direction.
The scene gives us a strong sense of Hays inner demons, but also pushes the story forward by introducing the hook of a secret, that seems to imply that Hays did something wrong that he might be able to right in this story line.
By pointing on Hays' misery, in a In a subtle way for the overall perspective of the 2015 story, the scene also might rise some hope that Hays possibly might find inner peace, that his has been missing for way too long. And as we have come to like Hays, I would say that we really should be emotionally engaged in the outcome of his inner journey.

Long and hard is the way that out of hell; leads up to light. And it's the only sunny scene in the whole film. Absolutely brilliant!
Anton Chighur holds the crown as the most authentic psychopath of cinema. I find Spacey's performance also highly convincing! Chighur's actually tough n' bad-ass, and look at this "tool of God", look how he speaks! Miserable, disgusting, jealous creature drowning in hatred, so full of himself! True psychopath right there.

Creating expectation. The message is: Committing crimes to "educate" people. I do not agree with criminals and their methods. These kind of movies try to pull lot of sympathy for true criminals. So to speak, criminals are highly intelligent people.

So many things set this film apart from others of its ‘type’, but the thing I always remember most is not only that the killer reveals himself on purpose with something like 30 minutes still left to go, but that he absolutely dominates the film from that point forward. So many films rely on hiding them, giving them minimal dialogue or just making them savage beasts. Andrew Kevin Walker doesn’t get enough credit (also curious how much of the “Fight Club” rewrites were his; the novel is already amazing but you can feel his touch at some parts of the film)

А «ОБЩЕНИЕ» человека в жизни С любым собственным ДЕМОНОМ, «ПРИВЕДЁТ» рано или поздно только к одному, или К ПСИХИЧЕСКОМУ РАССТРОЙСТВУ, или УБИЙСТВУ, или САМОУБИЙСТВУ. А ЧТОБЫ "ПРИЙТИ" к БОГУ или ПОЗНАТЬ БОГА необходимо ПОКАЯНИЕ.
