I agree with your comments on the movies that were on the regular Hallmark Channel, I don’t have Hallmark now so I didn’t see that one My issue with a very Vermont Christmas is the fact that her no was not taken as no. How many times did she tell the ex no it’s over we’re finished and he just seemed overbearing and pushy and not accepting. No as an answer. It wasn’t romantic. It wasn’t sweet. It was cringy.

Falling Like Snowflakes - This was a nothingburger all the way around. Very Vermont Christmas - The beer twist on the usual story helped (I was big into craft brew stuff for a while). Ryan did a great job, and I really like Katie's work in general (she really held her own opposite the veterans on Switched At Birth) and this was probably her best of the handful of Hallmarks but the fit just doesn't seem right. Rescuing Christmas - Rachel's prior hype for this had me looking forward to it, and despite some holes from chopping 20mins (they did the extended 3 Wise Men; why couldn't they show this in full?), this was really fun.

The heart is gone from Heartland. And now only having 10 episodes proves that the writers they have just don't have what it takes to make the kind of show we all came to love.

  • @00TheRealTC
    @00TheRealTC Před 6 dny

Dang, why don't you tell us what you really thought about this season? 😆😆 I agree that there ought to have been more resolution to the Amy/Nathan thing, but I'll be super honest that I did not feel nearly the same level of discontent with that side of things that you did. I guess it's because I am feeling that these things ought not to be rushed. It would have felt too pat if they had decided to become a couple when Nathan obviously still has unresolved issues. I guess I'm more of a slow burn fan when it comes to romances, if they're going to have a romance at all. Re: Tim's character development. Yes! 100% this was the first time he did not make me want to throw something at him for some inappropriate comment or bone-headed action. Maybe Jess is good for something after all, and that's smoothing his rough edges (which Miranda rightly picked up on). Re: Lou. I disagree about her not having anything (unless I misunderstood your comments). She's realising where she needs to be and how she needs to use her gifts and talents after coming through the shock of the past trauma that resurfaced when Nathan showed up. She needed that healing after doubting herself for so long. And now that we get that the source of her life-long insecurities was directly related to that deficit in her life (Tim's seeming rejection) I hope we'll see a much more self-confident, self-assured Lou. I anticipate Lou and Iris will probably have some business-related drama in Season 18, but that remains to be seen. Just no more Lou and Peter drama, please. The Chloe/Shane wedding was lovely. This, from Jennifer Hui (Chloe) about her experience: "When I auditioned for 'Chloe' the role was open ethnicity. At my first fitting, me and Jamie Block discussed the possibility of incorporating my culture into the wedding scene….I was blown away by the reception. From the writing to wardrobe to set design to make up to hair, everyone brought in an element of what a Chinese wedding would be like and it meant the absolute world to me. The splash of red, the dragon inspired hair, the double happiness symbol!" So that was really cool, I think. It was nice that Lisa _finally_ got to have a birthday celebration in an episode after how many years, and the cattle drive was a nice touch, since Lisa hasn't been on one of those with the family since Season Two (!). And of course the cinematography was top-notch, showcasing the natural beauty of Southern Alberta. I just love those widescreen drone shots. No real comment about Katie and taking that first (tiny) jump since I'm not a dirt biker and not a daredevil, but good for her for even attempting it. I won't dump on anyone's accomplishments, no matter how small and seemingly insignificant. I think that's about all I could say without going off on too many tangents. Thanks, as always, for your comments and opinions about the season (and the previous ones). Hopefully Season 18 brings about some of the resolutions you've been craving for these characters.

Thank you for all your feedback. I think with Lou it just feels like they struggle for to give her much beyond some kind of business venture. There was the Nathan episode but that felt relatively standalone to me. It just seems like now it's Heartland Beef, before it was mayor, before that the diner and then her book. I do think they struggle with what to do with her and the Jess conflict didn't work imo. If you follow my our When Calls the Heart coverage you know I'm not the biggest slow burn romance fan but I think there's a difference between a slow burn and being outright unlikable and rude. There needed to be something from Nathan. Some hint and there really wasn't in our opinion at least. We are going to cover 18 with the Canada airing if we can this year because waiting for the US didnt really work so we'll be back at it before you know it. Thanks

My rating for this movie was a 3 out of 5. Probably my least favorite overall in the series/movies. Doesn't mean I didn't enjoy it. Being a single guy having these views might not match with married people with kids. 1. I think the marriage and kids stuff shouldn't exceed 10% of a movie or show it seemed 60-70% in this one lowered grade 2. I agree it seemed like a filler 3. I'm glad we get another movie coming up. 4, One thing I did think after watching this where can these movies go see point 5 5. Was the kids announcement by Shane a subtle way to say the end is near (I hope not but....)

I am glad you have a new movie in the series and look forward to the next one. I will agree with Rachel, this will not be a favorite. It felt completely different. I didn’t get “the feels“ in this movie like I normally do, while the strife between Oliver and Shane is realistic for two people set in their ways combining a household, I wasn’t too crazy about that storyline. I really wish they did not have Shane pregnant at the end. I think for the age of the actress it really just doesn’t make sense to me. It would’ve made more sense to have Rita pregnant and Shane and Oliver may be discussing either adopting or fostering a child. I know both actresses are in their 40s, but there is a difference between 49 and 43. They did seem to tone down Eric’s makeup in this one. As I Recall in the last movie the pancake make up was just distracting. It was so thick. Present

Hey, you're totally welcome for the hearthstones images. (Use them wisely. 😉) Yes, please do try your best to get Sam Duke and Jessica Steen on your show. While this season was short (as the last few seasons have been), I didn't mind the seeming lack of "main story" or resolving the Amy's many suitors thing. _Heartland_ seems content to play the long game. I suppose the danger in that is that it could make some viewers lose interest, or feel that we're being strung along for no good reason, but real life is messy, and there are rarely any quick fixes or answers to life's mysteries, especially when relationships are concerned. Michelle's comment about "conflict for conflict's sake" between Jess and Lou was spot on. I was not a fan of any of that plot line with Jess being a total whiner about Lou's idea of the coffee station. Rachel was also right about it being impermanent so as not to be in the way all the time. Park it in a corner so it's not in front of a wall, and this from someone who was a painting major in art college, so I know a _little bit_ about displaying art and making judicious use of space. The added coffee station is good for random foot traffic, logically. You find ways to make it work. Definitely on Lou's side for this, too. (It also, again, felt like Lou vs. Lisa over the vision of the Dude Ranch when they were co-owners thing, so these recycled plot lines bore me. I am so done with them butting heads. Jess is really starting to look like 'Lisa Lite', but with all of the negative traits Lisa had in earlier seasons, and it's not a good look.) I felt so bad for Caleb being served custody papers. I really hope the writers soften things on Cass' side, because right now she's coming across as such a villain. Like, what went so sour in that relationship that she just picked up stakes and now wants to sue for full custody? I'd hate to think it was something like Cass believing Caleb was paying too much attention to Amy after Ty's death... Caleb deciding to leave and his farewell to Amy was more emotional than I expected it to be. From Amy's perspective, it felt to me like she was losing another piece of Ty. I did like that Lou decided to put her business expertise to use by helping the family business. It looks like they're going to need it, as you've seen hints of with Garland Foods deciding to drop carrying Heartland Beef in their grocery stores. More of that to follow in the season finale... No real comment about the Shane/Miranda disagreement over the decision to move to London for Chloe's job, but I do agree with you ladies about liking how Shane stuck to his guns about the decision the couple made. The Jess and Jack conflict infuriated and irritated me for a couple reasons. One was ideological, the other was continuity-based (more on that later). Jess absolutely should have given Jack the heads up about the picture. No nonsense about the light was so great, and it was such a good look, blah-blah. No. The artist in me absolutely balked at that; that Jess was so presumptuous that hey, he's family, after all, she didn't think she'd need permission. Just dumb. I know it's not because she had any ill will, but it just grated nevertheless. Continuity-wise, this whole cemetery scene did not work for me. Call me a nit-picker, but Grandma Lyndy is not supposed to have a burial plot and headstone. She's never even had one before this episode. Why? Jack told Lisa he spread Lyndy's ashes at the river by his fishing cabin way back in Season One. It's established _Heartland_ canon. So the fact the writers have this conflict over a private moment of Jack at his deceased wife's grave site that should not exist just made me dislike it even more. When that happens, you get the sense it was written because they wanted conflict for conflict's sake. It would have made at least a little more sense if it had been _Marion's_ grave, since the show never makes mention of her anymore, and we've really never seen Jack grieve his only child. But no. It had to be his dead wife's grave (that should not be there). Ugh. Zero fan of that whole thing, and again does nothing to endear Jess to me. As a "professional photographer" she really should have known better. You get releases and cover your butt. End of. I don't know what to think about Nathan and Amy in the tree, except that I felt bad for him learning he had his heart broken by his unfaithful wife. He's come across as such a caring guy prior to all this, one wonders if that event has left scars even he has not been able to process quite yet. His biting comment to Amy when she spoke of her love for Ty ("That ended in heartbreak!") made me think his own heartbreak hardened him in ways even he does not realise, and that's spilling over into his personal and business dealings. And again, I'm of the mind Pryce, Sr. could still be calling the shots about the brand of hardball they've been playing with their "neighbours" at Heartland. But time will tell if that's the case. Nathan can't be that much of a sociopathic Jekyll-and-Hyde, can he? Thanks again for another great review of the episodes, ladies! I look forward to your thoughts on the finale.

For Love & Honey - Andrew Walker's movies either really hit or miss for me, and this was the latter. Savoring Paris - I liked this too. There was a bit if an edge to things that kept the interest up. And somehow Joy ends up in far more winners than snoozers compared to the other regulars. A Greek Recipe - Oddly, I had low expectations after watching the interview with Danielle, but it was pretty decent. Her tan/sunburn making her darker than the locals was pretty jarring, and hauling the food from the restaurant kitchen to the house on the moped made no sense. Two Scoops - This looked very cute, but was quite the nothingburger. And again the secondary characters were more interesting.

I think the season was good overall, and this finale was particularly sweet. I don't get the whole Hargraves showing up either; why did he have to come in person as opposed to sending a letter or telegram? And I'm wondering if a Pascale Hutton/Jack Wagner mystery movie (with the two not necessarily being a romantic thing) could be a something.

Ep. 1706: Definitely enjoyed this episode from start to finish. I agree with your take that the writers should commit to "the lead" for Amy. Whether it's Nathan, Sam, or Caleb, they have to make a decision (or even Amy just deciding she's okay on her own-Jack was on his own for years before he met Lisa, for example.) In terms of fan reaction, of course there are still some areas that are fossilized in the "TAMY" mindset, and will not tolerate anyone new. I don't think Team Sam is a much of a thing, but I am not averse to the idea. Amy and Caleb already were an item in the early stages, so it would be like the second time around for them. Also not against this pairing, but I do think they're much better off as friends. And as far as I know, his divorce from Cass is final (I was not a fan of this breakup in any shape or form). Nathan Pryce is a bit of a question mark. He does come across as a genuinely nice guy. He'll help his competition just because it's the right thing to do if he sees them struggling. I don't quite know what is going on in terms of Pryce Beef vs. Heartland Beef, but it's possible he's still getting his marching orders from his dad. Is he suitable for Amy? I guess time will tell, but I suspect he still has some emotional baggage of his own... Re: Jack and Lisa. My favourite part of the episode was discovering Lisa's pool shark proclivities. I have to admit I was initially disappointed she pushed Jack to be the one to play against Devon, but when Jack lost, and Lisa stepped up to finish the hustle, I was so glad. Lisa winning back the belt buckle and seeing the barely disguised disgust on Devon's face at losing to her was perhaps my second-favourite part of the episode. Now, as far as I know, Dan never re-married. He and Val seemed to have started something a few seasons ago, but that obviously didn't go anywhere. I get the sense his family probably really liked Lisa despite the divorce, which is why they asked her to speak. (I mean, who else besides his immediate family would know personal things about him?) Finding out it was Dan who taught Lisa how to play pool was a lovely way to close the chapter on Jack and Dan's antagonistic ways, because Jack is gracious enough to admit Dan is the reason he got back his prized belt buckle. (Trivia: Shaun Johnston is from the town of Ponoka, Alberta, so it's cute that the belt buckle was for winning at the Ponoka Stampede.) Hopefully this is not the last we see of Jack and Lisa dancing, or the last we see of Lisa's pool-playing. (Please give Lisa some actual interests on hobbies for us to see, dear writers. Please. It's been 17 years.) I continue to like Katie's interest in dirt biking, and I like how she eventually stood up to Ellie. Brandon being a bit impotent when Ellie wanted to try some of Jack's hard liquor was disappointing to watch, but he's been pals with Ellie much longer than he's known Katie, so his loyalties are clearly going to be with Ellie. He of course redeemed himself when he came back to apologize, which was good to see. Ep. 1707: I also _really_ enjoyed this episode. This is the one I've been hinting at in terms of Lou's arc, and making me like her much more than I ever thought possible. (Side note: Lou was not a barrel-racer. She was a showjumper, and a good one, until Tim's rodeo accident totally spooked the daylights out of her and she never went back.) I also liked that the flashbacks continue to establish Nathan's "good guy" status. Discovering that Nathan's appearance is what triggered Lou's insomnia was such a great way to explore Lou's past and all the traumas she's repressed from Tim's seeming rejection of her at that crucial time in her life. This whole treatment of Lou's past coming to a head, and how both father and daughter came to terms with it, was simply excellent. I also really liked the visuals they used when Tim and Lou embraced in the woods, how adult Lou morphed into 15-year-old Lou: the Lou who desperately wanted her father back in her life. (Yes, Rachel, I was crying, too.) Author Elaine Collins is played by Jann Arden, a well-known Canadian musical icon (and more lately, actress). Her bitterness over the brutal reviews was so well-played. In a twisted way, I think she was probably trying to spare Katie the slings and arrows she has endured in her writing career. Loved that Jack intervened, however, and that Katie had the guts to give Elaine a piece of her mind. Yes, stubbornness does run in the family! Re: Ellie being a horse girl... Ellie was trying to hide the fact her family is wealthy more than the horse-riding thing, I thought. She did not want Brandon to treat her any differently. Hopefully this is the end of the conflict between El and Katie, because I think they're better as friends than rivals. (Shades of Ashley and Amy, but I don't mind it since they're still very much their own characters.) Rachel, I'm so with you. What else do you want in a _Heartland_ episode? Pretty close to being perfect. Taken with the previous episode, these two are on my personal top-tier list. Thank you, as always, ladies, for another fun and entertaining review. I look forward to your thoughts on the rest of the season's episodes.

Benedict was never with a man before Paul...S1 has him meeting someone who is gay and walking in on him and his lover having sex, and there's an overall plot there regarding being with someone in secret, etc. Just wanted to point this out to you, as you mentioned he was with a man in S1, but he never was.

One issue I have is they really spent too much time on the Lord Debling of it all! if you rewatch part one look at all the time that they spent with Lord Debling that could have been spent with Penelope and Colin! I just think there was a better way to have him realize his feelings for her!

Just the pacing all over the place is bad. They could have used Debling a lot more effectively

Great interview! Rachael Leigh Cook is always amazing and such a sweet person. I loved Rescuing Christmas! The movie she was referring to with Sam Page and Snoop Dogg is called Falling Up. It's also a fantastic film.

Thank your sharing your podcast! I can relate with the disappointment.😢 I kept on waiting for Colin to redeem himself and show/prove his love. I was flabbergasted after Colin went to Cressida and ended up making things worse. And after that at some point i thought they were pushing the 'feminism' a little too much. I have nothing against that but we are looking for romance here. I had wondered why Colin was not by her side when she was being revealed as Lady Whistledown. That made me a bit sad too. The confession of Colin at the end was great but I felt it could have been sprinkled in between their angry phase. Because I find it hard to bridge the gap from the angry Colin who's sleeping on the couch to that final confession. Just from reading previous letters. I agree they could have let Colin do more and could have written him better. And let the other romantic moments from the book show on screen. I weep fro Colin. He is so misunderstood from how he is portrayed on the show.

How could they possibly think Colin on the couch is what we want? I'll never understand it

Agree on both movies. Whitewater Romance was almost unwatchable 😬 and I want better for Cindy. Gotta checkout The Idea of You, I've heard great things on this one, including now this review.

Agree with a quicker LW resolution but re watch Colin’s words - he is upset with the lies hanging over them. Can’t fault that. Pen admits guilt for writing things in the past but doesn’t face his upset with the lies in the present and the lies make him want to separate Pen from LW (lies and jealousy of her success) he wants to protect her and his entire family and it’s not wrong for him to feel LW must be in the past. He could have accepted it sooner and dealt with the issues together. 100% they did Colin dirty in the writing.
