FIXING CRUSHED HEELS - Shoeing Barrel Horses for Speed
Looked like he had a dropped sole and stretched toe lamina - can't trim down, only back.
Very nice work 👏 👍
These need narration and explanation.
You are so talented! Ty!
The donkey must've done something wrong.
😢 ok… I cried! Animal neglect kills my soul. 😢
Would love to see more barefoot trims on the channel!
Ouch that’s a very deep seated quarter crack
Can you do one specifying the products you would apply on a quarter crack such as a patch etc
For a quarter crack we dont recommend apply anything that would cut off air supply as that does allow for bacteria to get trapped inside which can cause more issues than it helps! We recommend washing with betadine or iodine to keep area clean and clear of infection.
How long does it take to heal? Can such a large crack heal completely?
This should completely heal! As long as the hoof is supported, which is why we apply a heart bar, the hoof should continue to grow healthy and stop the crack in its tracks. If all goes well this is a 6 month to a year healing process.
Disgusting cruel owner should be charged with animal cruelty.
My first thought was pain in the hoof. The second thought was pain in the wallet. ❤❤
I can feel those heat burns, poor thing. Ouch
This is a painless process for the horse! The only discomfort they may have would be from vibration, but otherwise there is no feeling in this area of the hoof, and the horse should feel much better after it is floated and supported!
Excuse me What the suitable period between each restoration for Arabian 🐎
No matter the breed of horse, they should have their hooves done on a regular schedule! For our performance horses we recommend every 5-6 weeks for a trim or new set of shoes.
Wow such great work. How often does this have to be done? Can it be filed if much much shorter and done a lot? How do people do that on small farms? Call someone like monthly to so it? Someone educate me. This is fascinating.
How can anyone not love donkeys? ... let alone neglect one, neglect being actual abuse that is??
Very good
Thank you!
Love all of y’all’s videos.
Thank you!
Fantastic video, these videos are a fantastic resource
Better if you use cross tie
Cool, why use a center punch to mark shoes when you can use a stamp 😂
What kind of sealant is that?! My kids go to a Christmas horse show every year. Having some fancy feet would sure be fun!
Great job! Good on you, Lad! And thanks for what you do! 🇺🇸
Great stuff thank you for sharing!
Thank you. I have a young shier who trimmed too much toe back and left heels too tall. She became laminitis again. He won't listen to me. Trims like he's putting a shoe on.
God what a waste of time. Prefabs exist for a reason
Must be a very uncomfortable feeling for horses when they first have a saddle stuck to their back that they can't shake off.
They have a natural instinct that if something is on their back it must be a tiger 😂. You have to work them through it
My horse has been diagnosed with navicular disease. She is not doing well at all I’ve tried a lot of different things. Vet said to trip toes down?
My horse want lame on his front left had the vet come out and did a nerve block and he want sound she said it was rear heel pain in the front right hoof they did x rays and it show ring bone on the front feet This came out of nowhere he was fine last Tuesday and Wednesday morning when letting him out of his stall he was really stiff & lame on the right front hoof. Hés getting front Shoes with quarter clips and pads Thursday really hoping this helps him
You have a great skill.
Their entire quality of life is based around their ability to walk and run and graze. And it’s so clear there’s a problem! Even if you know nothing about them, you can tell something’s not right!
My horse want lame last week just like the horse in the video Had the vet come out and she block the nerve in the hoof, and he went sound. Hess getting x-rays Monday to see what's costing his heel pain. hoping he gets better
When working with aluminium, to prevent the tools from becoming clogged with shavings, you should always use some type of liquid that prevents the shavings from clogging the tool and no longer working as well as it should.
BRANDED 👍👍👏👏🇺🇲
George Goode from Tucson invented a T~square hoof leveler that takes any balancing guess work out the equation.
Look at that heel contraction, leave the shoes off and let this horse heal for 6 months.
This is not a fix, the heels are way too long
Wonderful video. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and your care. 😊😊😊
International Donkey Day is May the eighth every year!
Refreshing seeing this old wisdom in 2024. Many New Farriers have never been taught some logical basics shared here. I see soooo many frog infections and deep splits and severe heel contractions in even barefoot and shod horses. I don’t know how people don’t see it. I guess it becomes a bad habit to not look at the whole hoof. Trim what’s needed often enough and keep it healthy and enough protection left on. Barefoot is best if possible. And it’s usually possible. Love that you mention the boots. In old days shoes were used only in the spring and summer really because the hooves didn’t get to build a sole callus yet when the horses had to go to work suddenly in spring. But by summer they were tough enough anyway to be sound if they lost a shoe. Now we have boots and or maybe more patience to build up a good sole year round on varied terrain. I feel bad for the damaged hooves in most young racehorses and performance horses shod poorly so young. I don’t know if my ottb will be ever have an upright heel. Frog pads may be a forever need for her sadly to be more than a barefoot pasture pet. Ligament damage and severely underrun contracted hooves with negative palmar angles have left a very messed up central hoof sole that builds up lumps beside the frog. You do not see these things in barefoot horses or horses allowed to develop properly and mature before being shod carefully with breaks and proper ground contact. They are training race horses barefoot now and using boots just for the walk to the track if it’s paved and then still needing grass tips on race day to follow the archaic rules. But these horses have a future after racing. It is worth it and it boosts their performance too. I gave this mare more good years but to think of so many others in pain and euthanized when it’s preventable is disheartening.
excellent tutorial - learned a lot
I’d have left that nail and blocked it an extra blow. Aim high air force. But then again I freely admit that I’m an old school hack
❤😮❤ the finger print
My mare was just placed in them. Per x-rays her toes tend to run long, even barefoot, but look normal to almost short visually. Hopefully these shoes will allow us to keep the rotation/break over where it needs to be without hacking off all the toe.
Thank you for changing and improving that Donkeys life.
You are a good person with the heart of an awesome farrier.
Thank you for sharing
Как запустили копыта.
He is a hansdome horse for sure, I loved the process of working through the diagnosing and problem-solving steps 💖
Job well done!! Thanks for looking after the poor little guy.
