Adding Some Grit! Applying Anti-Skid coating - Flats Skiff Boat Build!
I talked about this in my previous video. Boat decks do tend to get slippery when they get wet. And to keep from slipping and busting my backside, I need to put down an anti-skid coating on the deck and floor, beginning with the deck. But in the interest of keeping the videos relatively short, this will get covered two separate videos. Part 2 is in the works.

Got the floor primed and ready for paint! I did run into one little hiccup that was more of an inconvenience than anything else. But it did take time to correct. In any case, the boat is well on its way to the finishing stages!

I haven't forgotten about the boat build or my subscribers, but I did have to pause the build for a few weeks. One of those home improvement projects that I've been putting off while I've been building the boat had to be moved to the front of the line, as I explain in this short video.

Winter Break is Over, Time to Get Back to Work - Flats Skiff Boat Build

It wasn't as cold a winter as the past two or three years, but still, it was chilly enough to make it uncomfortable. And I also had a ton of home maintenance and repair work that needed to get done. So I put the boat on hold for a few weeks and in this video, I sort of ease back into the build. But with warmer temperatures and daylight savings upon us, it's time to get the boat build up to full...

    Cheers for the video, I like the idea of using a router and a jig for scarf joints! I was going to use a circular saw with a jig but think I'll go with the router now I've seen your set up. Is 1to8 stronger than if you made the scarf 1to10? Please ignore if its a silly question, I'm new to using such techniques.

    • @thejohnboatfaithfishingand8078
      @thejohnboatfaithfishingand8078 Před 8 měsíci

      I don't think there would be any real difference strength-wise between a 1 to 8 and 1 to 10 ratio. But a 1 to 8 ratio would be easier to cut when you start scarfing thinner plywood such as 4 millimeter. But for anything 1/4 inch or thicker, 1 to 10 should work just fine. It would give you a little more contact area in the joint.

      Oh yes, I've noticed the prices of aluminum boats as well as the fiberglass flats boats like the Skimmers and Ankonas. That was what drove my decision to build. I still have less than $2K tied up in this build, not counting the outboard and trailer. All told, when done, I'll have about $7K in the boat. There are some good looking garvey build kits at boatbuildercentral.com. Good luck on your build! If you decide to video the build, be sure to post some links to your channel!

    Did you ever foam the pods? You had talked about it but did you change your mind or do it and not mention it again?

    • @thejohnboatfaithfishingand8078
      @thejohnboatfaithfishingand8078 Před rokem

      No, I left them hollow. When I started looking into the pour foam, I found that it was actually a bit heavy. Two pounds per cubic foot doesn't sound like a lot until you start adding up how many cubic feet you have to fill. As for the area under the floor, I plan to use styrofoam sheets. They come in four by eight by 1/2 inch thick sheets and I'll cut them to fit each compartment and stack them up to fill the area to the tops of the ribs and stringers. They're closed cell, just like the pour in flotation foam, but much lighter per cubic foot, and I can get them at any Lowes or Home Depot. Plus, I've heard some horror stories from other boat builders about how the pour in flotation foam damaged and distorted the plywood in their boats due to uneven expansion of the foam. There's one CZcamsr down in south Texas, somewhere near Victoria if I remember correctly, whose build was ruined by the pour in stuff. So I decided not to go with the liquid pour in foam.

    • @thejohnboatfaithfishingand8078
      @thejohnboatfaithfishingand8078 Před rokem

      Yes it was. I coated it with resin some time ago. And if I find a bare area, I coat with resin beforehand. Not all of the fillets will get glass, only the outboard corners. I also plan to pour that thinner epoxy mix along the center keel since my drain tube sits right in the way! Right now though, I'm waiting for the weather to warm up a bit. The resin is flowing cold pancake syrup. Prefer the resin and the surfaces I'm working on to be a bit warmer since I don't have a heater out there.

      @thejohnboatfaithfishingand8078 Před rokem

      Not a bad idea. I'm just not sure if I'm that good working with plain resin. The reason is, resin alone seems to be a bit too brittle. The addition of microballoons gives it flexibility which makes the cured resin more plastic like, and this is essential since the boat will twist and flex as it moves through the water. But....... I'm actually finished with the fairing now and have moved on to paint.

    I have a question. Can pods be constructed from different materials and then be fiberglassed and then fiberglassed to the boat. Hope that makes sense

    • @thejohnboatfaithfishingand8078
      @thejohnboatfaithfishingand8078 Před rokem

      If a person has the skill set, you could possibly build a mold and make pods out of fiberglass and then attach them to the boat, making sure to beef up the insides of the pods structurally so they don't flex or cave in from the pressure of the water flowing over them. If I had gone that route, I would have attached them to the transom using structural fiberglass angle, which is similar in appearance to angle iron, except that they're made of fiberglass instead of metal. But to answer your question, fiberglass and carbon fiber would be the two best choices for materials, and that's based on my experience doing composite repair in aviation maintenance.

    I've worked with light boat cloth countless times. I find that you dont need to wet it out underneath if you are only laying 1 layer of cloth at a time. I pour my epoxy directly on and spread it with a rubber squeegee. Makes it a lot easier so you dont have to mess around with the cloth trying to position it correctly onto wetted out wood. Try it out sometime! I typically only wet out underneath first if I'm using something heavier like 1708. Check out some videos on how to glass a surfboard. Same concept works for this application. Either way, yours looks great!

      I got to thinking about this some more while I was at work today. What you suggested makes perfect sense, especially for the second layer of fiberglass. My concern for the first layer was that the plywood might draw the resin out of the fabric, which was why I wet it down first. But with one layer already in place, that should no longer be a problem. It will simply be a matter of laminating the second layer to the first. So when I lay down the second layer, I'll be using the method you suggested! Thanks!

      Thank you! I have to admit, some of that is on me. I don't handle colder temperatures as well as I did when I was younger. Even the usually mild winters we have here in north Texas are becoming less bearable. That, and too many years working on the ramp and in hard-to-heat hangars at DFW Airport and Love Field in the middle of winter.

    Good luck getting your glass to stick around that 90° angle from the hull onto the sides. It's a pain in the ass. Your best bet would to be round that edge down with a plainer or a belt sander.

      I don't know if it's evident in the videos or not, but I did round off all the corners. You are corrrect, fiberglass does not like sharp corners. And I used epoxy thickened with wood flour to fill in all the inside corners as well. Thanks!
