Insulating a Wooden Beehive
zhlédnutí 232Před 11 měsíci
After suffering some winter losses in 2021/22 I decided to make some insulated covers for my beehives. They worked well last winter. This is how I made them.

I had a swarm arrive at my bait hive. They hung around for a while clustering on the box....I should have collected them while I had the chance because they eventually changed their mind and flew off. I was fortunate enough to get another swarm at a different swarm trap a week later. This time they went inside and stayed put.
Garden Studio Build #10 (Fitting the door)
zhlédnutí 95Před 3 lety
I've fitted the studio with a solid wood door that has an oak veneer. It was a bigger job than it might have been as I had to chisel out the hinge recesses by hand and build the door frame as I went along.

Potting Bench (Hand Made)
zhlédnutí 374Před 3 lety
I had lots of offcuts left over from cladding the cabin so I decided to use them to make a potting bench. It has a plywood table top and an integrated soil or compost bin. The bags of compost can be stored underneath in the cupboard and there are shelves on each side to store plant pots. Looks cold your area for that grease to be too thick
Has this stayed together and watertight as the liner will stop the water getting to the wood and expanding
Yes it’s still working fine
Thank you for sharing your process in creating a barrel pond. What did you end up doing to winterize it?
You need to make sure any ice that forms doesn’t get too thick. Where I live it rarely gets cold enough for long enough to cause a problem. I occasionally have to break the ice in winter and once or twice I’ve put an insulating blanket over the pond at night as a precaution
@@davidianoliver Thank you for sharing your experience. Am I also right to assume that you kept all the plants and wildlife inside the barrel pond through the wintry months?
A couple inch’s of pea gravel for the fish to feed on invertebrates at bottom with bricks on top under plant post. Only use aquatic plant soil or the water will turn green with any other soil.
Esos peces necesitan 100 litros de agua cada uno para vivir en buenas condiciones
Well done making your own nuc boxes. The amount of space a trekking colonies looks for / prefers is 30 cubic centimeters which is about 5 brood frames... Larger than this and the colonies are likely to not move in due to the space being too large to begin with. Lemongrass oil is very strong. More than 2 drops will likely expel the new trekking colony even though it attracts them in the first place as it is overpowering.
What type of glue did you use to stick the stones?
how many bearings each side

Great
Never been to India myself, looks beautiful. Ta for posting😊
Very beautiful work, congratulations!
How do u make it not overflow
Excellent I’m doing the same this spring in Surrey
Good luck Gary, it’s great fun!
Ok how do you clean it out ?
Go off grease master! 🍯🍯🍯
Put a plastic ball in your pond in the winter . The bubbles will keep the ball moving. And the water can't freeze 👍
That was very helpful, thanks so much for posting. The sticks are a great method for fixing. Hope you haven't been washed away today😀
Thanks Peter. I think insulating the hives really helps get the weaker colonies through to spring. Do you do anything with yours or is it a bit milder down with you? Not been too rainy today actually 👍
@@davidianoliver Definately milder down here. Last winter only had the Payne's Nuc and a single national brood, placed polystyrene above brood box and wrapped both colonies with bubble wrap as it's a bit windy here, that worked ok. Dark already, it's only 7.30!
👍👍
❤❤
They look fantastic. I like the poly carbonate boards, might to to do some for mine. Ta for the uodate. Bit if a strange year for honey crops
I’m happy with Blencathra but I’d really like to see more bees in the other three before winter… I’m hoping to vape them all today if there’s a break in the rain!
@@davidianoliver Thanks. Your apiary set up looks good, at some stage might be nice to see a video describing location, how you got the site etc, sure your subscribers would be interested😂
@@eastsussexbeesandwildlife5801 it was a local landowner let my BKA know they’d be happy to have some hives on their land so I took them up on it
@@davidianoliver A great result all round, thanks.
Thanks for that, nice lot of decent foraging you have, how was your honey status, did you manage to get a harvest?
Not much of a harvest…I had a fairly full super on the cedar hive and on Scafell but the bees ate quite a bit of it before I took it off. So I probably got about 7 or 8 full frames overall in the end. How about you?
@@davidianoliver Ta David. Not too bad, about 80lb, but that was from three biggest colonies and I took it off quite early. I might have to feed depending on weather but at the moment they all feel heavy, but still lots of bees. Hope the storm didn't affect you.🙂
@@eastsussexbeesandwildlife5801 we’ve had a fair bit of rain this morning. 80lbs is great…I’d be really happy with that amount. We got enough for ourselves but not enough to give away/sell.
I set mine up for .0005 to .001" end play. .0005 is what I shoot for. I've done mine probable a 1/2 dozen times.
Great content and hopefully more people will make these 👍
Little idea: Take the staples out of the gun, spray paint the back of the staples black. Reload the gun and you now have black staples. 👍
Thanks for this! Used MKS Sylvan Road pedals extensively from the early 80s to the late 90s, rebuilt them many times (of course), but am at it again all these years later and needed this refresher. Your video was exactly what I needed. (Also: how many products in our world go back fifty years essentially unchanged? For 35$ American, those Sylvan Roads are truly a worthwhile investment. Still work as great as always, too.)
Like to know how your barrel is coping re shrinkage and returning back to original size. By lining my barrel it allowed mine to shrink and eventually loosen from the metal rings which then fell to the ground. The barrel eventually fell apart leaving the liner full of plants etc. Unlined new barrel … and the water alone keeps the barrel sealed and correct plants keep water both cool and free from stagnating. Hope you’re having better luck than my first barrel. As an aside the whiskey/funky smell disappeared after a couple of days with plants in, though fish were not living in mine only plants for wildlife.
Mines been fine…still in one piece
Better off getting Japanese rice fish in the barrel as they are much smaller. They can go down to very low temps etc. mine survived this winter in the U.K. even under ice. Well done.
Thanks, that’s really interesting…I’ve never heard of Japanese rice fish.
Nice job 👍 Just so you're aware, goldfish can get to about a foot long, so it may be worth moving them into a larger pond and putting in maybe some white cloud mountain minnows or similar cool water fish, best of luck 👍
A mm per 80 cm isn’t enough fall. It will be ok, but when it all sags over time is when you get a problem. It also means debris doesn’t flow away. Advice for the future :)
Listen to those birds ❤
Do you still have the link to the filter that you bought? 🙏
You mean the fountain? I’m sorry I don’t have a link…maybe take a look on Amazon
I did it myself thanks to Woodglut.
Hope it held up, glad to learn about the solar powered fountain, will get one for my small pond. I just grow veg in my oak barrel- need to have drainage hole in bottom to avoid waterlogging.
I have two of these. One is a plastic faux barrel the other is a wine barrel that I bought a liner for. The frustrating part is they are in general, too deep. The plants are often marginal and don't enjoy being more than 10 or so centimetres below the water line. I found myself messing around with 'platforms' etc to raise the level of the plants. They were always falling over etc. So now I have floating pots instead. Thanks for sharing.
I love it the color looks like a blue grey.
They look wonderful! Amazing job!
Did you get your BARRELS from " GLENFEDISH BREWERY"?? I am watching you from Florida, USA, But I was in Scotland in 1999, I loved it , and especially that BREWERY, I wanted to buy the house just down from the Bridge, and live there forever !! Such a BEAUTIFUL PLACE !!!
what sort of pump did you buy and has it kept the water clear over a long period of time? I set up a half barrel a couple of weeks ago using oxygenator plants and its green already, so looking for a decent system which will last. thanks
Very nice. 👍 Those are the most satisfying makes, where you use offcuts or recycled materials; double plus. Very inspiring - thanks. 🏴
would a socket spanner not fit instead of the nose pliers,...im researching getting these peddles thanks
Please, dimencion in inches, thanckyou
How is the barrel now? Does it have a liner in it still? If the barrel isnt wet? Does the wood stop swelling? And the rings come off? Wood falls apart?
Nice one 👏 Get some bricks in there to elevate the pond plants mate 👌
That much space in your garage/ w/shop means your single lol
Hi there, thanks for the info (looking at whether to purchase a MKS NEXT because it has three bearings and spins better). Re: magnet for ball bearings, it's really useful and I'd rather bear the risk of magnetising them than the risk of having lost the little pricks because they LOVE jumping about freely. And then your bloody pedal's shot... I do think you are putting way too much grease. I advocate coating with grease liberally too - the spindle is optional, the threads are essential, the cup and cone housing of the bearings is absolutely essential, the dust cap is nice to have some. I sure hope you greased the spindle thread before attaching the pedal to the crank... That being said, the excess grease does absolutely nothing whatsoever, AND the excess just oozes out and leaves you with even more mess to clean off the pedals so just enough to seat the bearings in the cup and just enough on the threads is the way to go. I'd use marine grease because pedals are near the the ground and are a prime area for contact with water and dirt.
No offense, but I feel your pain in trying to fit the rectangular pond liner into a cylinder shape! It's a challenge, but now I know to just deal with it and make it work, and, worst case scenario, place plants in front of the untidy plastic edges!
As for the staples leaking water, any water that seems is only going to help keep the barrel wood wet and the staves slightly swollen.🤷♂️
How did winter go? Did you find any issues with freezing how did the fish cope with it all?
Thank you for your videos. I'm a woman that just started doing home DIY and you do make it look easy with good explanation
I have a barrel pond but it is plastic. I want to put fish in but reading a lot about what kind of pebble/stones to use to keep the plants from floating? What would be suitable to use that would be safe for fish?
what kind of joints? i can't understand the accent.
