One thing I don't like about Rush is how they portray Clay Regazzoni as an a$$hole, when all sources claim that he was a likable, humorous, down-to-Earth guy.

Lauda was ugly, not just homely. His jaw was deformed, giving him a significant overbite, and he was a mouth breather. His upper teeth were constantly visible, and his lower lip was behind them. People called him The Rat behind his back. And I'm talking about his looks before he was burned in the fire. The actor playing him is far too normal looking, even with the fake upper teeth they had him wear. After Lauda was burned in the crash, he had plastic surgery to deal with the scars, but he also had surgery to fix his jaw. So, when you see pictures or videos of him later in life, you are not seeing The Rat. I say this because it's important. Good looking people who can manage to behave civilly get preferential treatment. Ugly people get treated like a booger stuck on someone's finger. Lauda was born into a rich family, so he got many advantages in life, but his looks meant he would get the worst of the best. I think that he developed a pushy personality because his father was that way, but also because people did not treat him seriously. He had to force them to by being very good at his job.

The point isn't that he 'just' thought of using magnesium parts, it's to convey that he's very well educated and has a lot to offer. He didn't just make the car lighter, he made it more aerodynamic, handle better, tiny little improvements in every regard.

Always amazed me that we use magnesium for engine internals, considering it's best known for burning really well! 😆

The "are you using magnesium parts?" line is not about the part, but Niki showing his expertise so the mechanics take him seriously.

The smiles on the mechanics faces when he waves goodbye is so good.

Ah, the old Paul Ricard layout... Back when it was identical to Brands Hatch

This part of the movie all ways sticks with me because I remember reading Lauda's account of it in his autobiography. There he makes no mention of him being responsible for improvements in the car but does tell the story of him going to team ownership about the car lacking power and them calling people who promised changes to the exhaust system could make a difference, it never did. Lauda was on a contract that required him to pay for his drive, when creditors got nervous he would show them his fathers house to keep the money coming. In his first contract with BRM he inserted a clause that required the first payment after his third scheduled race as he didn't have the money. He was hoping to deliver enough points that BRM would decide it was better to pay him to stay than the other way round. He was right and that was the start of the legend. Maybe not as visually stimulating as the story told in the movie, but in its own way, equally thrilling.

Says Paul Ricard circuit but looks like Brands Hatch to me. Cleverly they've made it look like Nikki is leaving but he's walking down the under-track walk way towards the paddock and under the garages at Brands in the wrong direction and changed the signs in the tunnel.

Absolutely love the soundtrack here.
