    Ricciarelli moves through the role like a shadowy depressed, lyrical figure versus a metallic powerhouse with coloratura high notes. This is a full lyric soprano rendition. A woman miserable, whose past has made her into a mobster. Her only chance at doing something right all goes wrong. As expected the “Come e bello” and the cabaletta following in Act 1 and her “M’odi ,m’odi “is her finest moment where she able to use her pale boyish soprano to forlorn effect. Elsewhere there are slight register issues off/on & a nonexistent chest register which robs the interpretation quite a lot. This makes her Lucrezia very moody, neglected, lunar and nearing a breaking point that never quite explodes rather fades away….The overall experience is a gentle heartfelt Desdemona-esque/La Contessa interpretation effect. Another way to play this incredible role. The suicide ending and non repeated part of the cabaletta was a total downer and made little sense theatrically. Mezzo Dupuy and tenor Barasorda are absolutely delicious. The tenor ringing and vocally clear. The mezzo often sounds mannish and that is exciting. Her use of how she uses dynamics is also a pleasure. All with a mannish mezzo that is exciting.

    Andai a vedere questo spettacolo con in mente e nel cuore l'interpretazione della Caballé, di cui avevo ascoltato decine e decine di volte l'incisione in studio dell'opera a fianco di Kraus e della Verret, e francamente mi aspettavo di rimanere inevitabilmente disilluso: fu invece una delle più entusiasmanti esperienze della mia carriera di spettatore della lirica. Malgrado le imperfezioni evidenti, Katia Ricciarelli aveva un carisma interpretativo eccezionale, come del resto Silvano Pagliuca, che vantava all'epoca, se non ricordo male, almeno venticinque anni di carriera. Perfettamente conforme alle aspettative la prestazione della Dupuy. Una bellissimo ricordo.

    What a pleasure to hear full-throated singing that is grounded in the "core" and emanates from it. Today's singers sound as though they are singing through a was of cotton. Pretty but not convincing.

      Totalmente de acuerdo contigo. No obstante, las voces de la ópera de hoy en día las encuentro “pequeñas”, “sin profundidad”, incluso se oyen en cantantes sonidos “constreñidos”. Verdi no se escucha Verdi, Puccini no se oye Puccini. Y, en el bel canto, puros sonidos nasalizadnos, poca belleza en el canto. Producciones y escenografías irrespetuosas con el texto y con el compositor. Siempre es “ilusionante” escuchar las grandes voces como la de Ricciarelli, cómo bien tú dices artistas que cantaban “a viva voz”….que es como se canta en la ópera. Saludos cordiales.

Leider ist die Tonqualität dieser alten Aufzeichnung eingeschränkt.. I. Akt= =0.000; II. Akt= ca. 1.20.00 ; III. Akt =ca. 1.54.35 (Kaum zu glauben: diese Aufführung wird noch übertroffen - durch eine Wiedergabe aus dem Liceu Barcelona mit der sängerisch-künstlerisch wie menschlich-darstellerisch reifen Editha Gruberova -unter der nochmals "zugespitzten" musikalischen Leitung von Maestro Friedrich Haider - vgl. entsprechendes CZcamsPosting).

    Place: Venice Time: 17th Century ACT ONE Foreign powers have conspired against the government of Venice, but their plots have been foiled. Capellio, a rich senator who is in love with Bianca, daughter of Contareno, another senator, asks her father for her hand in marriage and wins the father’s consent. Upon Contareno’s suggestion the streets of Venice are plastered with copies of a decree that punishes with a death sentence anyone who communicates with foreign powers. Capellio is perplexed by this, but the Doge reminds him of the dangers threatening Venice and the rumours that general Falliero may have fallen in battle. However, Falliero himself enters St. Mark’s Square followed by his officers. Bianca is overjoyed at the return of her beloved. Contareno tells his daughter that only she can restore their family to their former glory and for this reason he has chosen the worthiest husband for her. Bianca believes that he means Falliero and is thunderstruck when she hears the name of Capellio. Contareno calls her to remember her filial duty, threatening to repudiate her and to use his own power to ruin the young hero’s career. Falliero believes that he may now introduce himself into the Contareno family as a worthy suitor for Bianca. Bianca, beside herself, tells him that her father is opposed to their marriage, but does not tell him of her father’s threats. The nuptial procession marches in: Contareno, Capellio and, finally, Bianca. The girl is resigned to do her duty, but at the moment of signing the marriage contract she tries to hold back. Falliero rushes in and accuses her of breaking her vows to him. Contareno orders him out of the house. ACT TWO Bianca’s nurse, Costanza, persuades her to see Falliero one last time. During their talk Bianca repeats that she loves him but insists that she cannot disobey her father. Contareno comes on and Falliero has no alternative but to leap over the wall dividing the house from that of the Spanish embassy. Contareno is all for celebrating the nuptials at once, but Bianca again tries to get out of it. Seeing himself spurned yet again, Capellio goes away greatly offended by the insult. In his rage Contareno is about to repudiate his daughter, when at that very moment the chancellor Pisani comes in with surprising news: Falliero has been found in the Spanish ambassador’s house and the Council of Three will be convened immediately to judge him. When he is summoned before the Council (which consists of Loredano, Capellio and Contareno) the young general does not try at all to defend himself. An unknown individual comes forward claiming to be the “gulty man’s accomplice”; this is none other than Bianca herself, who again declares her love for Falliero. Contareno tries to have him condemned but Capellio, who has already declared his disapproval of the severity of the law, is now convinced of the young lovers’ sincerity. Judgment is therefore referred to the whole Senate, who absolve Falliero. Contareno tries to oppose the marriage, but now it is too late: rather than lose his daughter’s love he resigns himself to permitting the young couple to marry.

      What are you talking about a proper baroque style? Are you crazy? it is the most beautiful rendition that exists of this aria. Please, not mention Montserrat Caballé, because the director had to duplicate orchestral moments, so that the elephant could breathe, because she ran out of air. With Katia Ricciarelli we have an impressive rendition: Dream expression, line of expression like floating in a celestial cloud, perfect phrasing, voice of an angel, phrasing according to what ArIa demands, limpid coloratura passages, worthy of a Master Class and perfect trills. And I am able to do this review because I have a doctorate in musicology from the University of La Sorbonne.

    Katia was a great singer with a beautiful voice and very intelligent singing. Yet she was another victim of the cold blooded Turandot through the hands of a tyrant, Karajan. Singers, be careful!!

    Katia was throughout her career very criticized, by choice of repertoire (by God, all the sopranos sang some role that was not for your type of voice, but only attacked her to Katia), simply envy because she was the only woman who when she debuted, was Beautiful, stylized and with the voice of an angel. No one can forget their Desdémona, Liú, Luisa Miller, Lucrezia in I Due Foscari, Anna Bolena, Maria Stuarda, Elisabetta (Don Carlo), Amelia (Un Ballo in Maschera). After she stopped singing she reinvented herself, and became a great actress, and won awards. It will never be forgotten, at least for me. I love you, I love you, and I will love you forever.     Noch nie in so einem breiten Tempo gehört - fantastisch, mutig, detailreich - wie ein einziges Gebet. Da kann die Tonqualität nichts anhaben. Muss man gehört haben. Auch ohne stupende Kolaturen herausragende Interpretation. Chris Merritt noch bei wunderbar klarer Stimme... großartig. Leider haben sich diese Pioniere der hohen F's wie Chris, William Matteuzzi, B. Ford u.a. relativ schnell die großartigen Stimmen verbraucht, sie haben nach meinem Gefühl noch sehr unökonomisch gesungen. Aber ich verehre sie immer noch.

    This is amazing music by Rossini , opera at its very best , great belcanto singers at the height of their careers , wonderful chorus and orchestra . This is what I think of as real opera , I love to hear beautiful , harmonious duets , trios or quartets . I am moved to tears by the beauty of the singing in this splendid recording .
