Old Man of Coniston: An Unforgettable Adventure
**Hiking the Old Man of Coniston: An Unforgettable Adventure**
Starting from the Walna Scar Car Park, I embarked on a circular hike around the iconic Old Man of Coniston. I began by walking back into the charming village of Coniston to officially start my journey. My first major stop was the historic Coniston Coppermine, an awe-inspiring site filled with fascinating derelict buildings that stretch up the mountainside. En route, I paused to capture the beauty of several waterfalls, their cascading waters providing perfect photo opportunities.
The path through the old Coppermine route was steep and slippery, especially with the rain making the slate underfoot a bit tricky. However, the effort was well worth it. Midway up, I took a break to admire the serene Low Water Lake. The clouds rolling in above added a mystical touch to the scenery, although they did obscure the summit, making it barely visible.
Determined, I pressed on to the top where I encountered Dolly the sheep and her friends, adding a charming touch to the summit experience. Despite the low cloud cover, I managed to find the summit trig point and snapped some photos and videos to commemorate the achievement.
From the summit, I traversed across the top, starting my descent through some rocky paths. A rocky and scree-laden path took me down to a point where I had initially planned to ascend to Dow Crag. However, a minor ankle roll made me reconsider, prioritizing safety over additional exploration.
Instead, I continued past the picturesque Goats Water Lake, descending a steep, rocky path that eventually re-joined the main path. This path led me back to the Walna Scar Car Park, where I was relieved to swap my hiking boots for trainers and prepare for the drive home.
Despite the cloud cover limiting the views at the summit, the hike was an incredible experience and a worthwhile challenge. The rich history of the Coppermine, the beautiful natural scenery, and the encounters with local wildlife made it a memorable adventure.

Thanks for sharing James. Great video. We did it recently via a different route. Lovely views from the Old man!
thankyou there are a few ways around it the one i was going to do would have taken me up over two more points but tweaking my ankle coming down made me cut those out and just settle for the old man so i didn't do any more damage. i've been out in peak district today and its not given me any problems so hopefully get back out on the bigger peaks again soon đ
Thank you for sharing this lovely walk. Gorgeous scenery and a perfect area for photography. Hope you have a great week. Best wishes Dave and Dawnâ„

Thankyou it's such a gorgeous place to walk đ
Great video â€
Hi James thanks for subscribing, I have subscribed back! Fantastic hike this one , itâs my favourite mountain in snowdonia and I think the walk I did here was possibly my favourite of all time. I went up the way you came down and did an out and back walk. I know the way you went up itâs rugged and scrambly but looked good fun. I was lucky and had a clear top , views were incredible. I have a video of it on the channel. Enjoyed this from start to finish - took me back there. All the best , Adam
So glad you enjoyed it I'm hoping to get down for pen y fan, corn du, cribyn at the end of the month and I'm off to Scotland July/August so plenty more in the pipeline. I usually do peak district most as this is close by with me being in Sheffield but enjoy the more challenging areas too. Aran Fawddwy was amazing even in the weather as it added to the challenge and I will be back there for another go hopefully on a clear day and a hike up cadair Idris
@@JIMcLauchlan Hi Jim , wow that sounds great, Pen Y Fan, Scotland and Cadair Idris will all be fantastic. I would recommend the Fox path on Cadair Idris nice and quiet and a bit more challenging. Thatâs great being local to the Peak District, lovely area. Iâm local to the Brecon Beacons, hence the name! đ look forward to your next outings. Cheers Adam
@adamradford2285 thankyou I'll take a look at the fox path. I've done more or less everything in the peak district over the last 4 years so gonna start moving into lakes, Wales, Scotland now đ the kids will always like the peak district for local walks so I'll still do those as there are many I did before I started recording footage.
This is wonderful. Love to hear the water flowing, so relaxing. You were lucky with the weather. Looked quite bright at times. Thank you for sharing. Have a lovely weekend. Best wishes Dave and Dawn â€ïž
Thankyou I think I started spitting on my way home so I was lucky to avoid any rain. It was quiet sunny and mild I wore a t-shirt from start to finish and my coat never came out of my backpack. Have a great weekend đ
