Wow! Did I hear correctly in this podcast that more focus will be on suits than the absolutely ridiculous giant, house size props for too many years? If liability issue has finally put some kind of limit on this trend, fans have been screaming for years and years to get something done about this. Hope it actually happens because, if a vote was taken by folks, I would bet the farm that something like Quaker's Scarecrows' Hay Day would win hands down compared to a current routine. We're off track and have been for way too long, but, heck, I'm just a regular person.

Jersey deserves a special award from the Association at the next banquet for these podcasts. SO great. SO informative. Great conversation with Shawn. Always a winner with the behind the scenes stories.....example -- who knew the bands have to check the street for potholes? Really? The city doesn't even do that for the parade. Oh for the days, huh with prize money and some respect. Crazy. Now I'm gonna hope the bands don't have a "toe pick" stumble (old movie reference from Cutting Edge 1992 -- hockey player learns to figure skate).😀 Hey, Shawn -- any video clip from that session at the Museum of 250 band members playing before it had to be cut to 75??? That would be something to see! Just a thought.

Always a winner with these podcasts. Thanks so much to everyone who takes the time for these episodes. Loved the inside tidbit that it’s a 3 generation harness being used by Aquas captain. A helpful hint also to use a heat gun to melt the solidified glue off the decorations instead of trying to pry off the material. The things we learn in the podcasts!💜😀

Wow. Pat T. Gets the prize for the most mileage clocked getting to a clubhouse. Thanks to the Jersey guys spending lunch with me while I listened to the latest broadcast. Couldn’t help but remember the old Friends episode where Ross could only find an armadillo costume during the holidays. A little thing that sticks in the mind and, yes, would make a great costume. Walton family shows why Mums can create that special family/music/tradition/great story world we all love so much. May this tradition live long and prosper, as Spock used to say. Perfect wording in this discussion -- some bands keep "throwing snowballs at the judges." That is a GREAT description of what has been, unfortunately, happening for too long, but I offer -- That can't be the ultimate long-term goal -- creating a social media effect with the next chirp sound or whatever text tries to get a person's constant attention. I'm nobody -- I just find that style makes the presentations feel disjointed from what Mummery should be and why, I think, the tradition is in danger of disappearing. Presentation is important, yes, but balance is critical (music/presentation/costume) and the change of judging from the local reps to the outside forces and the altering away from the 3 part judging system has contributed to this situation. To me, as a super long-time, passionate fan at age 65, it's the LITTLE details that have made all the best performances over the years. I wonder what Bob Shannon, Joe Ferko, and all the other players from all levels of accomplishment would think about the current state of our beloved tradition and the direction it's going. From 27 bands in the 80s to the 14 competing bands left -- something clearly isn't right and, as Scott Ratzke said in his interview -- and we all know it -- it's a disappearing hobby. The question is -- what's going to be the focus for the remaining time we have our treasured Mummers around.

Forwarding a little Mummers ditty I jotted in honor of Corina's book.......I'm no Dr. Seuss, but it works, I think......giggle...... A Mummery freak, yes I sure am. From days of my youth to the now. Simply the best - something so rare A tradition surviving, we wonder how. Long-timers like us we hope and we pray That the youth with a passion for sound. Will carry the torch and keep it alive To string bands may their pathway be found.

VERY MUCH enjoyed the chat with Scott. Yes, he has "crazy big shoes" to fill, but from watching the Ferko videos, he has the "floating" movement that makes a winning Mum captain. It has to look smooth and easy to be the person in front of a string band. One thing I particularly love about Ferko is that they -- along with some of the smaller bands -- have not sacrificed the Mum sound. Ferko sound is very unique and easy to spot. Love the calm, easy going discussions with the casts. To really go behind the scenes and get the feeling of what it means to be involved with the time commitment (like players being sleep deprived for New Years!) of this great tradition is terrific. Suggest Mike Caputo for a future chat -- walked with Joe Ferko? Gotta document that guys memories. A family member of Big Bob Shannon would be another great historical discussion. Jersey String Band has done a wonderful thing organizing these discussions. A great effort every time. Every Mum fan should be watching them. And yes, WE LOVE THOSE GIANT BACK PIECES! For every player that has lugged them during the parades, fans appreciate it so much. No words to describe the beauty of them during the presentations. Interesting description from Jersey about what it feels like physically with the backpiece coming off. Loved the father/son memories.....and the snapfish book Mom Walton makes each year. Special touches that make the podcasts great.

Another excellent podcast from Jersey. Especially liked the very unselfish comment by the one guest -- when asked his favorite part of being part of the band, he responded -- Playing for the people. FAR too many people today have the "look at me" mentality and join bands for the ego of playing. The REAL reward to any long-time Mum fan is to hear that kind of response. Way to go and let's hear it for the young players in Jersey -- definitely the way to keep the beloved tradition alive. Request -- can Jersey post the musical notes on the Jersey Facebook page for the brief tune played at the Wrestle event? Would be fun for all of us musicians to play. Again, great episode. Look forward to the next podcast. Thanks for taking the time and producing them.

Love the discussion on the bass fiddle.....You bet fans have always wondered how in the WORLD does anybody carry that, march and play at the same time. Takes a powerful player to make that happen! Have a suggestion about the theme for the group. Personally, I think the commonly used giant props are just ridiculous. Hope some band this year just has fun and does their presentation using very effective -- but not oversized props -- and does something where PIECES of props come together around the band to form something applicable to the theme. I think that really works -- using the members as part of the formation of the display/props. Example -- Ferko's Barnyard Boogie, which I love as my second favorite routine -- surrounds the band with a plastic type fence. Probably didn't cost much and really works. And, of course, the egg crate thing is too funny. Could the band do something where the marshalls form a James Bond car -- or some other prop -- around the band? The oversized things used so typically these days are just ridiculous to countless numbers of us Mummers fans and we just shake our heads that those things are not indicative of true Mummery. Also, hope Jersey incorporates songs that are ACTUALLY recognizable -- not just a bunch of saxophone rifts. When the bands chant a little bit, too, SUPER big fun. But, hey, that's just me sharing because I'm 65 and have seen the other side of Mummery -- and what's going on in recent years with the bigger bands isn't it. Frankly, it's just boring. Looking forward to Jersey's presentation -- definitely unique theme. Keep the podcasts going. Just like making a visit with the band. Continued success to Jersey.

Had to pause the podcast to comment……I just LOVE the one comment…..”If we worried about first place, we wouldn’t be in this business.” Such an important and critical comment these days. Some people only see the win, not the joy of the family experience with cozy string bands. Wish I lived closer to participate with this band. They have the right focus…..the celebration of the tradition and the magic of the mummers. Back to the podcast. Have enjoyed all 3. Keep them going.

Always enjoy string band podcasts. Like the theme for next parade by the by. Unique. Several of the bands have themes that are way too similar. Heard that years ago, a priest would either nod or shake his head when themes were submitted. Maybe that should be tried again.
