  • @christianstainazfischer

I didn’t realize that Jamaican English had that much more metathesis. Metathesis is basically when two sounds switch places, actually pretty common. Some examples in American English: the word ‘mix’ was originally pronounced like misk, ask is pronounced like ax in AAVE, the r and i switched places in ‘third’. Some of the metathesis in English happened in the transition period from Proto Indo European to Proto Germanic, some happened from Proto Germanic to Low German which gives English and Dutch three/drie-third/derde, but German drei/dritter. Some happened from Ingvaeonic to the early dialects of Old English - which gave the sk to x switch in mix in one of the more influential dialects, and the sk to x for ax in the more northern dialects which weren’t so influential - yes the ask/ax thing isn’t new, and isn’t a mistake, but actually a sound change that happened in northern England over a thousand years ago and the people who spoke that dialect are the same people African-Americans were exposed to (have to keep myself from being in trouble with youtube). I love being exposed to new accents, dialects and languages, totally changes how you view the world
