One of our own NOCD therapists, Saraa Lee, joins us on this episode of the Get to know OCD podcast. Treating OCD from a cultural lens is one of Saraa's many specialties.

In this candid interview, she opens up about her challenging upbringing and offers deep insights into her approach to helping others manage OCD. Saraa leaves no stone unturned, delivering a powerful conversation about the intersection of culture and mental health.

Just speaking for me here but, you know, I've been consuming content related to OCD regularly for some time, and just learned that the use of social networks such as CZcams (young people on TikTok are apparently particularly concerned) also tends to lead to quite a lot of "self-diagnosis". I also went physically to an OCD specialist, but was not convinced by her conclusions which pointed "sligthly" towards OCD. Sooo, what if what I'm experiencing is not OCD ? Since it would, in my case, be SOCD, and not the fear of being some kind of criminal ? What if I tried real hard to convince myself that it was OCD ? I don't know but I'm gonna try in real life, even if that scares the hell out of me, and see how it goes.

In indonesia It's very difficult to get an OCD diagnosis here, I don't really understand it, but once i have explained to the psychiatrist who handled my anxiety about what I was feeling, i wasn't open yet, I only told the gist of it, he said I only had intrusive thoughts, even though I clearly told him I was doing mental compulsions like repeating the words of forgiveness because it was like I had committed a big sin, and I also often shook my head every time a bad thought appeared, I think OCD is more physical here but idk

I'm also from india... If you have pure o then go ACT THERAPY . its acceptance and cognitive diffusion part is similar ERP. And live in uncertainty means if this thing will happen then I will live with it, but now this time I want to be habitual for these thoughts ...when u do it .. eventually your mind will be habitual for your thoughts and you can easily let go them.. don't try to stop thoughts. Thoughts without emotion is not harmful ..and when first fear come with thoughts and you accept it and allow it in your body and don't react upon it ...then eventually first fear will go away. And you will be habitual for it ...then you can let go them easily... Do meditation to increase awareness for PURE O OCD. Don't take medicine 💊💉 it's not helpful ...

ERP is one of the, perhaps the hardest thing, that has to be done in life. But, it MUST be done, and stuck to. Yes, just like learning piano, a good analogy there. It's daily mental exercise like physical exercise. I keep this in prayer each day. It must be done, do or die, to victory, onward. Thank you for this video, and all you're doing at NOCD.

  • @katherinepoltoratzky8712

I am currently suffering with ocd for years. I have tried to get help, even join the NOCD CZcams sessions and never get my quesiton answered. One time Patrick and the other guest I believe called out my pocd question, made a comment about it and (not Patrick), somethingalong the lines - did you see that? Patrick agreed. I went to the SF ocd conference, gave my story on the mic - met a woman who took my info who never followed through. I spoke with the NOCD east side director for the US and I emailed him more than once and over a year later with no help. He told me he'd try to help. I met 2 people who were also a part of the conference who introduced to Patrick McGrath - we Zoomed, was promised they'd help and they'd get back with me - that promise was not fulfilled. I ahve tried with my insurance - I was too severe so they sent to County help....they sent me to Berkeley Mental Health. I asked for help with paperwork....they don't do that. I spent time on the intake for hours the first time and they told me I had to do it again - I tried and didn't complete it. I have told my dr, asked for help, I can go on and on for the help I've sought. I even had an appointment with NOCD only to be told they no longer take my insurance (Medical - Alameda Alliance for Health). I have tried Gateway, Rogers, etc....but am told help can be gotten through Kaiser with my insurance but they won't take me. Why? They don't take new patients. At ALL! I have a case worker who also said would help and still hasn't gotten back with me and after about 6 months or more of working with him, doing this assessment, making this call, etc....I stopped. This journey of getting help has been hell. And NO ONE talks about poverty due to ocd. I lost my car, I am in fear of getting a 3 day notice and not eating enough or well enough is truly traumatizing and continues the cycle of trauma after already having cptsd. I have gone to free food places here in the Bay with homeless and sometimes dangerous people. I don't look like them and people don't see why I would get free food (and many times crappy food) since I am not dirty....it's ocd and my beliefs about it. When at the ocd conference over a year ago, all the treatments were in the thousands. I have tried on my own, gotten prayer, have been sent to a crappy therapist and let go, was not let in for trauma help due to my ocd, and more. I feel resentful that others have gotten help, aren't in poverty and deal with ocd. I don't even have supportive family or friends. I have God and right now don't understand why my journey has been this hard and this long? I do try every day and have gotten slightly better but the depression really hit due to poverty trauma today. When I don't sleep it has triggered low lows. I want help. I want freedom. Wiillreach out to her. Thank you for the video. I think NOCD not accepting Medical was a greed move unless you can tell me otherwise. Why leave people struggling with severe or moderate ocd who are already struggling behind? I'm just hurting and angry.....years of this without the help I want. Even my walking was affected. I remember it took 45 minutes just to walk 3 blocks. I have struggled alone for so long, want help, have knocked and yet it's so hard. Lastly, I felt SO alone at the ocd conference hearing story after story of how people got help and recovered. Where is good help for those with little means??? God help me. I will keep praying for help. If anyone has any referrals of some sort please let me know. I am in Berkeley. I also have attended 2 ocd Zoom groups for the Bay - NO HELP there. No one is struggling like me. They have help from their insurance and IOP. I want what I see others get - help and freedom. May you have her on again. She was a great guest.

I have a doubt... I see many videos with examples about doubts and the solution is to don't know the answers, like say to your brain "maybe yes maybe not" But, when you intrusive thoughts are not questions? Instead your intrusive thoughts are affirmations and you compulsion is to prove that those affirmations are wrong, so, to dont do the compulsions, could I say to my brain "yes, you are right"

I have sexual orientation OCD right now as a theme (since 2021) and I want to applaud Chrissy for talking about the sadness that comes with the disorder. Using myself as an example, the things we cling onto/for fear of loss or otherwise becomes a breeding ground for OCD. OCD attacks the things we love and when we start to fear that loss, we do everything we can to prevent it or if it has happened already or we can’t access it, we feel as sense of mourning. And that can be extremely devastating. I know many people with OCD who have a fear of losing a significant other (parent, lover, friend, pet, etc) and begin performing compulsions to ensure they want. And this clinging is exhausting. I had that with my attraction towards women, I clung on and did compulsions to the point it was completely inaccessible. I exhausted myself! So, just because the theme and compulsions looks different, doesn’t mean the underlying “fear of loss” and need to control or limit the possibility of loss” doesn’t exist.
