Superb, full of great British actors, who normally seen in comedy series, enjoyed their acting chops here. Don't shoot the messenger, sadly for him.

Caught this on BBC Four last night. Interesting and certainly watchable, and replete with ye olde 'derring-do' action sequences. Not the world's greatest fan of the ending though.

I remember watching this as a family on Channel 9 in the Bay Area (KQED) when it was on in America, some 45 years ago. Still the best spy story I've ever seen, movies or television.

Personally I don’t think Hordern is that good - two dimensional and predictably taking the path of least resistance . I seem to remember a Russian production which captured the essence of kingmandhip and the realities of life in feudal times. Some of the supporting cast are pretty naff too. Probably unused to playing to cameras

I had to take all my courage to watch this episode again, it's brilliantly acted but so heartbreaking, because it's rather obvious the wife did it. Perhaps they should re-open the case. The verdict was entirely based on assumptions, not facts - no proofs, nothing. He had very little interest to kill the lodger, while the wife (who is very weird) must have administered the poison in small doses (the symptoms), she had an affair and was fed up and disgusted with taking care of the lodger and her indifference to her husband's fate and the smile in the end and the fact that she remarried several months after her hasband was hanged explain everything. The little girl was strange too... she couldn't remember who sent her to purchase the fly papers? Really?

I got to meet Michael Jayston at a Who convention and very pleasantly surprised him by telling him he was the "definitive Peter Guillam". We had a very nice chat about the production and his much regretted absence from Smiley's People. He told me Judy Dench was one of the actresses in the running for Madame Ostrakova.

Arthur Marshall was a very dear friend of the late great 'straight' (pardon the pun) actor, raconteur and comedian, Kenneth Williams...
