If This Breaks, the U.S. Could Lose $1 Trillion | The Soo Locks
The Soo Locks is one of the most critical pieces of infrastructure in the United States... and I had no idea. So, I went to the Soo to try and understand the engineering behind how the locks work, and the geology behind why they're needed. And along the way, I went on some incredible, unexpected adventures.

    16:15 One key point to note regarding "why not build it bigger" is that you would then run into the exact same problem they have now with most of the traffic going through the larger of the two locks. If given an opportunity, shipping companies will ABSOLUTELY build ships larger if they know they will fit in a lock, and then you run into the same issue, except now the ships are too big even for the Po. Making the new lock the same size means you can now send ships through either lock, which adds redundancy in case one lock goes out of service.

  • @adsbadsb9488
    @adsbadsb9488 Před 3 dny

    Bigger or longer locks are impractical, as a longer ship will have difficulty navigating some areas in various rivers and ports. As it is some turns and channels width and depths in the river just accommodate the 1000 footers.

  • @adsbadsb9488
    @adsbadsb9488 Před 3 dny

    It was not clear, but the very first locks on the St. Mary's River was in Canada. The first lock to be built in the St. Marys River was on the Canadian side in 1798 by the Northwest Fur Company to facilitate the fur trade. It was destroyed by the Americans in 1814 during the War of 1812 to disrupt British trade. Currently, a single small lock is operated on the Canadian side of the Soo.

    Idk why I found it so funny to see a video about life in the UP 😂born & raised here, north of the bridge AND north of the bridge (Keweenaw Peninsula). This will always be home to me and I wouldn’t want it any other way… the long, ridiculously snowy winters; the endless days on Lake Superior in any season; long drives through endless forest country roads & seeing two dozen people you know every time you run to town. I don’t care that there’s “no shopping” here. I don’t care that shoveling takes up half of your waking hours during the winter. I don’t care that your choices for eating out and other “going out” experiences are extremely limited. Life is what you make of it, and life up here is pure, rugged, untouched, peace.

    this is not all that clever, by any stretch of imagination. we dig stuff up and then need to transport it very cheaply, so we build great big things that further interfere with nature, to get large amounts of low value material transported cheaply. if we were clever, we wouldnt be doing this, but it would most likely put a spanner in the overlords grip on humanity. not saying we should still live in caves, as there's not enough to go round, but moving low value stuff long distances doesnt strike me as clever.

    Why they sank is no great mystery. The smaller details of the sinking will forever elude us. They were simply out in weather they had no business being in. I don't care a hoot about seaworthiness, or past storms or any of that jazz. The simple fact is the boat is sunk along with 29 people. You got a giant storm going on and they were out on the lake. That decision lies in the hands of the captain. There was never a time that they could not have got out of the weather and dropped the hook. Actually had they done that the Fitzgerald would probably still be in service. But they pushed the issue and they lost. Now how can I say all this? I spent years crewing some of those "steamers" Been all over and inside them. I have seen Superior storms with my own eyes. Basically I don't think a load of anything is worth sailing in that kind of weather.
