How long was the ride?

This past week, May 17-25, 2024 my husband I stayed at Westgate Cocoa Beach Resort. When I booked the week in February, I asked that we would be able to use the one unit with a balcony facing the ocean. I was told that only those who pay the nightly rate would be able to use it. I learned from this answer that because I am an “owner” I do not have the privilege of using that room. Even though we paid $24,000 for this timeshare, we do not have the clout that someone who books through Travelocity or some other rental website. So be it. Because I made so much “noise” before coming to Cocoa Beach, the manager decided to give us an upgrade to a newly refurbished unit next to the beach. The parking lot was our view, but the accommodations were very nice. To take care of the musty smell that places in hot climates always have, I put out a bowl of used coffee grounds in the kitchen. That pretty much took care of the issue. After we checked in, we were given a welcome packet, and I clearly stated to the woman who gave it to us that I did not want any “updates”. She assured me that we wouldn’t be bothered and she kept her word. This was one of the few times we have been left alone while on vacation. The very word “update” causes me to feel ill from the many bad experiences that we’ve had with what I call the Sharks. And it surprised me that this small two-story resort right out of a 1960’s postcard with Cocoa Beach! printed over the resort image, would have so many of them roaming around the lobby. I did see a few families given the “90-minute update” while we were there and it took all I had to keep from begging them not to cave to the Shark’s unrealistic promises. We really did have a nice time, and I thought about how it much nicer these resorts would be if there were no Sharks and no updates. Instead, families could freely decide if they wanted to learn more about the resort’s owner program. The family could ask the questions and the Shark could answer them honestly. He or she would tell the interested party that a timeshare would cost around $15,000-$40,000 for one week a year, and that the week on the deed wouldn’t necessarily be the week they would “own”. The Shark would tell them the loan would have 17% interest added. There would be an estimated $2000 a year in maintenance fees. He or she would also tell the interested party that they could only get a personal loan through their bank to refinance the timeshare loan and that loan would have an interest rate of around 13%. The Shark would also tell them that this purchase is forever and that nothing that happens to them will be considered a reason to cancel the purchase. If the interested party cannot afford the timeshare any longer, they will be told that they have to sell it themselves, but what they are not told is that timeshares are impossible to sell, even for a $1. In a perfect world, that is how I think it should be. For us, this time we had a little taste of a perfect world being next to the beach for a week relaxing under an umbrella and watching the waves.

I used to work at a small store on the commons decades ago. Glad to see the State Theater is still there. OMG SIMEON"S IS STILL THERE?!?!?!?!?!?!!?! The Marriot and the building across from it are new, to me anyways. Mahogany Grill huh? Looks the same but I can't quite recall the name of it's incarnation during my time. Collegetown Bagels still has that same downtown location they opened as new back in the mid 80's. One of these days, I'll take a long weekend and drive up that way. Thanks for posting this.
