Written and sung by David Ball, this is a wonderful Country Swing style that David was good at singing/writing for. I hear Uncle Walt liked the silliness of the song, and tended to goof on it in live performances. An example was at one show, when the line "Faster driver won't you please" came, Uncle Walt stuck in the quip "I can't get in out of second gear". Got to love him.

Love the harpsichord. I've always wondered why there was a shit-ton of it in pop music during 1966-67 and then it just disappeared, like fell of the face of the earth. It's a beautiful sound and fits folky stuff like this to a tee.
That this went to number 1 in the UK shows the huge difference between musical taste with the US. Probably didn't even chart here. Kind of reminds me of blues great long john baldry's no.1 hit let the heart breaks begin.
I think it's the most poetic song in American pop music with such tight, poetic lyrics in just two minutes. Music and lyrics are in perfect harmony. Four letters; is it love (it is a rosery crayon), or the quintessential four-letter word "fuck", or hell, or shit, or maybe nuts! We don't know, and thus the listener must interpret what it means to them. Simon and Garfunkel's poetry brings you true art.
Our first dance song at our wedding in 1990. Not a typical choice, lol, but I loved it.
Jimmy strips it down to the raw emotion. The most basic truths. Art takes it and hits it into the stands. A miracle of a track.
A very consoling song in my extremely hard times!
This entire LP is filled with great songs sung and performed beautifully.

Why are my you tubes saying they've fully played when sometimes they haven't? I've had this with a few of You Tubes. I went into this one again after it cleared by mistake after listening to three quarters of it and when I went back into it I found that it was fully played but I hadn't listened to all of it. I've had this with another two or three one of which I decided that I wasn't interested in.

This song always gives me goosebumps. I think it’s the way they juxtapose a pleasant little tune with such tragic lyrics. It breaks my heart that this kind of songwriting seems to have died out forever, but it’s brilliant that CZcams keeps re-introducing it to new generations.
