Double Talk: Mark Steffen & Michael Mandel 3.6.21 Remind Me & Jeez Louise/LCIFF
The Las Cruces International Film Festival starts this week, hosted by Ross Marks and our own Mark Steffen, and maybe Steffen Ross.
Here are the wonderfully named drinks we present with their recipes both from Difford's guide online, added as advised by Bob Libby:
Remind Me - yes, that's the name of the drink
1.5 oz Grappa (a 40% or more clear alcohol from distilled leftover grapes)
2/3 oz Averna, a Sicilian amaro
.5 oz Mandarine Napoleon/can use Cointreau, Grand Marnier or triple sec
Old fashioned glass with a cube
Jeez Louise - another great name for a drink
1 1/3 oz Averna
2/3 oz triple sec/ we used Mandarine Napoleon, it's better and we had it
5/12 oz Cynar (a tad below .5 oz) Cynar is an artichoke based aperitif
2/3 lime juice
1 2/3 oz club soda or tonic, like we used... Fentiman's or any other
highball glass with ice

Crowned King is the name of the drink, not a political comment, also from the renowned Simon Difford. It has the combination of sherry, gin, and Luxardo maraschino liqueur that seems to have potential. And we talk about food and government.

The Leon is an offshoot of last week's cocktail slyly named the Finnish cocktail after the Finnish distillery that inspired Simon Difford to create his Molotov Cocktail. This is made with the gentian based liqueur, Suze, a favorite of our friend Beth and me, too. Then it has gin, cognac, and lemon. We try a variation adding a bit of Campari which works. The name comes from the 1995 crime drama "The Usual Suspects." We also talk about the blip in our democracy. Hopefully only a blip.

Even though this is booked as the Christmas show it was on the day after Christmas so we worked through that and had a bubbly drink preparing for New Year's Eve that was suggested by someone in the Las Cruces American Wine Society monthly tasting, which was Prosecco and Guinness Stout. A French 75 is like a salute to a passing of the worst conditions for Thanksgiving ever. A French 75 was a cannon developed in 1894 which had a soft recoil but delivered a punch. Even though we'd done one a while ago and previewed the Italian 75 within the past 2 months, Mark was in the mood for one after seeing it opening up one of his favorite cooking shows.
