    Loved your review. I like that you kept a positive attitude throughout. I loved the original, it's one of my favorite movies ever and I enjoy the other movies in this franchise as they all add to the same story and universe (II, III and The Beginning) and I actually enjoyed this one as a continuation of that story and universe. For me, I think the movie would have been benefitted greatly of being scarier and more profane if it was going to place itself as a true sequel to the original movie. But I am looking forward to seeing what they come up with for the alleged two more movies planned, especially now that Blumhouse/Universal have realized they need to think them out more before producing and releasing them.

    2023 was a good year for watching movies with a total of 211 movies watched, 184 horror, and 40 of them from 2023. On your list there are ten movies I have not watched yet. And I agree that 2023 was not the best year for horror movies. But usually, these are years where you get first or sophomore movies by very promising writers and directors. And from the amount of very good or great movies I got to watch, I feel very good about the future of the horror genre. My favorite horror movies from 2023 were: Totally Killer / The Blackening (2022/23) / There's Something Wrong with the Children / There's Something in the Barn / From Black / Til Death Do Us Part / Five Nights at Freddy's / No One Will Save You / Talk to Me (2022/23) / The Elderly (2022/23) / When Evil Lurks A few honorable mentions, movies that, I felt, went a bit under the radar, but promise a really good time and/or make you feel uncomfortable: Influencer (2022/23) / The Mill / Unseen / Mother, May I? / Night of the Hunted / Hell House LLC Origins: The Carmichael Manor I also thought Emerald Fennell's Promising Young Woman was a stellar piece of writing and movie, and I'm eager to watch her 2023 movie. The writer/director I became a fan of in 2023 was Brea Grant, with several smart premises that are socially relevant and would make Rod Serling proud. A huge thank you for pointing me in the direction of many great movies again! 🙂

    I watched 54 movies this year, all of those new ones to me, but only 36 released in 2023. Only 12 of the 54 were horror and only 7 of those released in 2023. 😅 In no rating order Godzilla Minus One There's Something in the Barn Totally Killer Renfield Evil Dead Rise Scream VI Knock at the Cabin (only one I didn't enjoy) My top ten movies of 2023 #1 - Godzilla Minus One Evil Dead Rise The Creator Oppenheimer Killers Of The Flower Moon No Hard Feelings Guardians Of The Galaxy 3 Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning Part One Spider-Man Across The Spider-Verse The Boy And The Heron The Whale was released in Australia in 2023, but not everywhere else. It would have been tied for first and I would remove Mission Impossible. (edit) I'm only just noticing that Letterboxd has Talk To Me as released in 2022.... that throws my list off. 🙄 I'd remove No Hard Feelings and/or Mission Impossible, to make room for it. 🙃

    • @andreas-ni8iv
      @andreas-ni8iv Před 7 měsíci

      @@TheRICKY85 It must have been in the early Oughties, when Spirited Away had come out and a retrospective of all Studio Ghibli movies was shown in Germany. I know it was offered in Cologne and Hamburg and they could not show Porco Rosso and Princess Mononoke. All other animes were shown from dvd copies. They even made sure to offer Grave of the Fireflies and My Neighbor Totoro on the same bill (as on their original release in 1988); the first one is very sad and when shown as a double feature the second anime is totally uplifting. Only Yesterday in particular was a stunning experience to watch for me as it's an anime that could have easily be made with real actors, and you can hardly believe they went through all the effort to make it this way. In case some local festival decides to make a retrospective, I can only encourage you to watch them on a big screen. Most of the Studio Ghibli animes are available on dvd and bluray in the US and UK in Japanese and English and with English subtitles. The French editions only have French subtitles and the German editions only have German subtitles. There's also an inexpensive box set with 25 animes on 9 dvds available in Germany and the US, but I don't know about the quality or if it's legit (Ghibli #1-22 plus the earlier Hayao Miyazaki animes: Nausicaä, The Castle of Cagliostro and Panda! Go Panda!, with audio in Japanese, English, Cantonese, and Mandarin and subtitles in English and Chinese). I could look for a copy and send it to Australia, but with postage it would be EUR 80. It looks like The Boy and the Heron is scheduled for the first week in January 2024 in Germany. I saw articles in today's newspapers. 🙂

    This is a list by someone who truly loves horror and its related genres. It's great to bring some attention to more undervalued movies. I've seen a handful of them before (3, 5, 14, 17, 20), several I've heard of, and nine are new to me. I don't get to watch as many films as you do, but if you asked me to come up with some honorary mentions, I'd suggest: A Dark Song (2016), The Tokoloshe (2018), Liverleaf (2018), Impetigore (2019), Underwater (2020), Lucky (2020), The Power (2021), Offseason (2021), You Won't Be Alone (2022), Soft & Quiet (2022), Moon Garden (2022), and From Black (2023). No films with an arctic or cold setting here, so let's add Werewolves Within (2021). This is maybe only the tip of the iceberg. 😁

    I saw it. I didn't care for it. You're right about the visuals. I got a little annoyed when they didn't pull off at the last stop. There were so many reasons to do so, but the writing put that into the story when it would be better to not have it in there at all. Plus, it was obvious that the crates were the isdue when they found the girl. Why not throw them overboard? I live the cast and setting. The crates could be hidden better, and the last stop could be removed to make it fully work.

    Glad you gave this review. I found the movie to be so good that it's one of my favourites. It shows the real challenges of single parenthood, the confusion between possession and mental illness and so much more.

    I must have been the only person that liked Knock Knock. I had fun 😂 but he does more than just the gore he's branded with. I really liked his indie film The Stranger, and the first Hostel had an artistic approach to it... or maybe im just a trash fangirl, and enjoy torture porn 😂

    In October I tried to focus on catching up with some 2023 movies. I made a long list of 30 movies for guidance, which was the first mistake. Because anytime I watch a movie, it creates a certain mood, it explores issues I may want to explore more, it points me to directors I want to watch more from. There are so many things that have an effect on what kind of movie I want to watch next. -1-6- I started the month with All Fun and Games (2023). Two brothers find a cursed knife in this story of possession. Production values are nice, good for a one-time watch. + Til Death Do Us Part (2023) was the first highlight of the month, a movie in which everyone is a literal killer. When a bride bails on her wedding, she must fight off her ex-groom and seven angry killer groomsmen to survive the night. Martin McDonagh’s Seven Psychopaths (2012) may have been a reference here, with which Til Death Do Us Part shares many moments of black humor. Great movie if you’re looking for a fun time and highly rewatchable. The Exorcists (2023) with Doug Bradley was a dud. Low-budget, derivative, there are too many much better possession stories. Can’t recommend. + No One Will Save You (2023) is another great movie. Discussed on your channel in detail. There’s lots of suspense, the writing keeps you on your toes, and the film is highly rewatchable. In Huesera: The Bone Woman (2022) a woman becomes pregnant and is haunted by a demonic presence. It’s a movie that uses horror as a vehicle to discuss a woman’s doubts of becoming a mother. And like The Babadook (2014) it transcends the horror genre. It’s very good, very well told, a great exploration of the main character. Best is to let you be lured in by the mysterious title. My first rewatch was Below (2002), a drama with supernatural and mystery elements about a submarine crew during WWII. I don’t think the movie has aged that well. While well-played and with a compelling story, it feels slow-paced when compared to contemporary movies. If you like horror with a confined setting, give it a try. If you’re looking for a war film with horror elements, Deathwatch (2002) is the better movie. -7-11- + Next was From Black (2023). A recovering addict is grieving the loss of her son who went missing several years ago and is presumed dead. She learns of an occult ritual that may reunite her with her son. I followed it up with A Dark Song (2017), which deals with the same topic of a woman who agrees to an occult ritual to speak to her dead seven-year-old son. Both movies focus on the ritual and the hardships, cleaning and punishing exercises the women must grow through. The movies are different enough that it merits watching both. Both women rely on a male figure to help them with the ritual, which makes you wonder about their motives and adds additional suspense. Both movies were excellent. The Nun (2018) was only my second movie from the Conjuring Universe, and I watched it in preparation for The Nun II (2023). I had a very good time watching it. Great decision to cast Vera Farmiga’s daughter Taissa Farmiga as the lead. Before I Fall (2017), based on a YA novel by Lauren Oliver, is a time-loop movie about a teenager who relives the same day again and again, a day that ends with death. It also deals with the insecurities of being a teenager and bullying. All in all, it’s a solid B-movie. Then I picked a Dutch movie, Het Geheugenspel (2023), an adaptation of Nicci French’s THE MEMORY GAME (1997). It’s a thriller that introduces us to a well-situated and wealthy family clan and has betrayals and buried secrets. It’s basically a dime novel fantasy about keeping up appearances in society and how the well-situated also do evil deeds and get away with it until they do no longer get away with it. I was hoping for something with a mystery or perhaps supernatural twist, but unfortunately it was not meant to be. If you watched an episode of the German TV crime series Derrick, this plays to a similar audience. It’s tedious, pretentious, and feels fake. -12-17- + Totally Killer (2023) was a delight, a blend of a slasher and Back to the Future (1985). Highly recommended. In Unseen (2023), a nearly blind woman is kidnapped by her murderous ex, escapes from his shack in the woods only to find herself hunted by him, and accidentally video calls a gas station clerk she now relies on to become her eyes. It’s a great set-up, the gas clerk has her own problems that become worse through the course of the movie, and all of it makes it a fun and tense thriller. Maybe not a first-rate movie, but well-played by its two leads, entertaining, and recommended. + Then I watched There’s Something Wrong with the Children (2023) and Body at Brighton Rock (2017), both directed by Roxanne Benjamin. Benjamin co-produced the first two V/H/S anthology movies and went on to write and direct some truly scary segments for the anthology Southbound (2015) and the all-women anthology XX (2018). Body at Brighton Rock was her first feature film. It had a mild supernatural element and was almost family-friendly in comparison to her short films. A summer employee at a state park wants to prove herself to her colleagues, gets lost in the wilderness, and finds a dead body. It lacked suspense, but what I enjoyed was how the development the character goes through is grounded in realistic choices. Her sophomore movie plays in a different league. It has creepy kids and, in its first half, explores how a relationship with friends changes once they have kids. The characters act like real people and there’s a natural flow in the way they, one by one, begin to realize there’s something wrong with the children. This is definitely a writer/director to watch. Highly recommended. As I had recently seen Underwater (2020) with Kristen Stewart as a great lead, I watched her earlier movie, The Messengers (2007). Here, she plays the teenage daughter of a family that has just relocated to a new place, a sunflower farm where something terrible has happened years before. It has great production values, creates a good atmosphere, and is one of the better Pang Brothers movies. While the story is standard horror fare, I watched it with a focus on Kristen Stewart, and she is phenomenal in it. + “The Horror of Dolores Roach” was my next watch. It’s a mini-series in the tradition of Sweeney Todd. Gory fun and highly recommended.

      -18-22- + On your recommendation I saw It Lives Inside (2023) and it was a pleasant and surprising watch, one of the highlights of the year. It’s inspired by Indian demonic mythology. It has great production values, is an exercise in suspense, and is at times terrifying to watch. Highly recommended. Did anyone else notice that a Japanese remake of Cube (1997) came out in 2021? Though Vincenzo Natali was involved and is said to have created one of the rooms, the movie suffers from a group that is not very varied, all except one player are men who grew up in a patriarchal society and act like it. It’s the kind of remake that makes you groan “why?” + Next, I watched The Elderly (2022) by Raúl Cerezo and Fernando González Gómez. It’s a must watch if you like cosmic horror and has scenes that get under your skin. It’s one of the best movies of the year. I followed it up with Passengers (2021), which also features Paula Gallego but is very different in pace and vibe. Here, we get a blend of sf, horror, and comedy. Two directors to watch and I’m looking forward to what they’ll come up with next. + Guy Pearce made a new movie, The Infernal Machine (2022), and in some way it harkens back to his early calling card, Memento (2000). Almost like a chamber play, it introduces us to a writer of a famed book that inspired a mass shooter, which resulted in the writer becoming a recluse. One day he is approached by a fan of the book who found out his address. It’s a story that twists and turns into a knot and then there’s a final reveal that leaves you stunned. Or not, depending on your mileage. For me, it was another highlight of the year and highly recommended. + I did a rewatch of the extended cut of Escape Room: Tournament of Champions (2021), which really pushed the development of the story and becomes more than a simple rehash of the first movie. Isabelle Fuhrman’s character is a brilliant new addition, and the final quarter hour stays with you. I know there are people who would have preferred the revelations to be kept for a later chapter in the franchise, but I’m a proponent of art pushing into new directions early and constantly, though I also see the potential risk of alienating your viewers, readers, or listeners. Also, why isn’t Logan Miller a bigger name? -23-27- I watched the first episode of “Outer Range” (2022), a series in a neo-western style with Josh Brolin as a farmer who discovers a mysterious pit on his land. But maybe it’s not a mere pit, but a portal? It looks like a promising and original series. The Exorcist: Believer (2023) is a well-made sequel to the original movie. It gives us possessed characters from two different cultural and religious backgrounds. The script is solid, the character arcs are developed nicely. You don’t need to be familiar with the original movie, but there’s also some candy for fans of the original. It does nothing wrong, but the true test will be the second movie in this new trilogy, and I hope it will take some more chances. + Five Nights at Freddy’s (2023) seems to divide the horror community a bit. Fans of the video games think it’s too tame and not gory enough. Viewers who aren’t familiar with the video games enjoy it more. For me, it felt like a love letter to the original. The production values are great, the detail that went into the animatronics characters and the art direction is admirable. Responsible for the fantastic animatronics, that are adorable and appealing to children in one scene and menacing in the next, is Jim Henson’s Creature Shop. A title sequence, done in pixelated video game style, presents the back story of the missing children. Each character has its own motivation and its own arc. Five Nights at Freddy is the kind of horror movie that has a heart. -28-31 Paco Plaza explores the dark underbelly of Spanish Catholicism in Sister Death (Hermana muerte, 2023), a movie that takes us back to the year 1949 and tells the story of a novice who is sent to a monastery as a teacher and, facing a paranormal presence, finds her faith tested. The atmosphere is spooky and it’s the kind of classic ghost story Paco Plaza does so well. + When Evil Lurks (2023), written and directed by Demián Rugna, is the kind of movie that makes your blood run cold. It takes a familiar trope and reinvents it in an original way. Along with Talk to Me (2023) and The Elderly (2023) one of the must-watches of 2023. It made me curious to check out Demián Rugna’s earlier movie Terrified (2017), which turned out to be another chiller. I ended the month October with Hell House LLC Origins: The Carmichael Manor (2023). It has higher production values than the earlier movies, has all the vibes of a classic haunted house movie, and is another creepy chapter in the Hell House LLC series. I’m impressed how the series develops and becomes better with each new instalment. And this was my October in movies. 😅

    These look like some wonderful recommendations. I've only watched four of them (1, 4, 9, 14) 🙈 and they all had something that sticks with you, that won't let go. Six more I've heard of but haven't gotten to - there were periods of time when I didn't watch any movies. And then there are ten more that are new to me, which includes the final five you've discussed. I'm still on the fence whether 2023 was a great year for horror movies. Is it because I watched the wrong movies? Which leads to the question, should I use the remaining weeks of the year to watch more 2023 movies, just hoping for the best? Or is it better to work on the backlist and choose some gems from past years? Anyway, thank you for pointing me to some underrated gems. Have you seen Night of the Hunted (2023) yet?
