From Blessing to Curse (From a Donkey's Mouth!) - Balak (Numbers 22:2-25:9)
zhlédnutí 130Před měsícem
What would you do if your donkey started talking to you? What would you do if your god made you bless a nation you wanted to curse? What if it commanded you to commit murder? These questions and more arise from the Torah portion “Balak” (Numbers 22:2-25:9).
Vows and Violations -- Nasso (Numbers 4:21-7:89)

While the narrative of the Exodus towards the Promised Land has mostly ground to a halt by the book of Numbers, the Torah’s legislation around priests, purity, and promiscuity continues to fascinate. In this Torah portion, we find a procedure to test a wife’s fidelity, vows of devoted consecration, and a special blessing for priests to offer the people. They are windows into the Jewish past, ev...

Arguing Jewishly part 2 - The Power of Words
zhlédnutí 243Před 3 měsíci
Jewish culture has often emphasized the power of words, from Genesis creation accomplished by “let there be,” to replacing animal sacrifice with fixed recitation, to the idolization (and even idolatry) of a book of books. Today, we argue ever more fiercely over the meaning of words: “free speech” “Zionism” “justice” “antisemitism” “democracy” are just some of the battlefields. Can our Jewish pa...
Arguing Jewishly part 1: From Kvetch (complaint) to Community

Over the centuries, Jewish civilization found ways to domesticate disputes, accepting multiple interpretations and diverging opinions. To be sure, there were heretics and schisms, but the joke “two Jews, three opinions” is rooted in real experience and core values. How can this tradition of debate provide models we can use to deal with differences today? The International Institute for Secular ...

Until the 20th century, most wars saw armies in uniforms facing each other with clear rules of engagement. The struggle between Israel and Hamas highlights these issues for our...

The Hellenes did not invade Greece at the time of the appearance of the Sea Peoples. The existing Mycenaeans were Hellenes. Im confused why Asherah would be so unexpected in artifacts. Isn’t she literally mentioned in the Bible? And isn’t it constantly complaining about the Israelites worshipping other gods? Why *wouldn’t* there be artifacts showing polytheism in the first temple period - wouldn’t the Bible actually be lying if we did *not* find polytheism? lol

(21 August 2024) At 40:43-48 of this video Professor Israel Finkelstein cites the Egyptologist, Donald B. Redford, that the Egyptian geographical setting for the Exodus is the Saite period of the 7th/6th century BC. However, the REAL BOMB SHELL IS Finkelstein's acknowledging that Redford (an Egyptologist) has pointed out "a very ancient event " is being preserved in the Exodus: That the Hyksos Expulsion of ca. 1550 BC by Pharaoh Ahmose I, has been recast as Israel's Exodus in the Bible! Cf. pp. 412-413 Donald B. Redford. 1992. _Egypt, Canaan and Israel in Ancient Times._ Princeton University Press. "There is only one chain of historical events that can accommodate this late tradition, and that is the Hyksos descent and occupation of Egypt...in fact it is in the Exodus account that we are confronted with the Canaanite version of this event..." If Redford is right, drop the nonsense of looking for an Exodus date of either 1446 BC (1 Kings 6:1) or 1260 BC, Ramesses II, its 1550 BC!

Lots of interesting thing said here. Ecclesiastics and Job directly influenced by Epicurus? Job seems like a book about God and spiritual forces showing deep concern over human affairs. Epicurus thought the Gods disinterested entirely. So Job was a parody? A comedy? I just looked that up and yes! Not how I was taught when I was a member of another heretical sect to arise out of ancient Judah. "We don't believe the earth was created 2000 years after the Babylonians already drank beer" 🤣

But we know the bible isn't factual from the "get-go." All we have to do is read the first passeges of Genesis. No self-respecting scientist would accept the age of the Earth and the universe as described in Genesis. So there's the first loose thread. Then, as the bible continues, there are many "tugs" on the thread until the entire fabric lies on the floor in a pile of string.

But just because the "memories" of several hundred years before, were written by the Jewish priests or scribes doesn't mean those memories are of Hebrews. That's a frequent point of Finkelstein, i.e. that memories of heroic deeds or persons were appropriated by the early Hebrews as their own. Much of the Jewish Bible is an accumulation of ancient memories of events that preceded them throughout the Middle East. It's similar to a book of historical fiction but with extreme liberties.

It is pretty absurd to apply as done at 27:04 that the bar is only achieved if Israel explicitly declared state policy to wipe out Palestinians of Gaza: no country would do this in the modern era for exactly the reason its explicit admission to a state crime that would immediately bind Convention signatories to respond. Not even the Rwandan genocide rises to this level as it was right-wing Hutu Power political parties & their private paramilitaries, augmented by ad hoc community pogromists-who actually carried out the killings, not the normative state or army in the main.

So much of what he says can be disproved by anyone that's seriously study talmud. Btw, Reform Judaism comes from the German emancipation where Jews were forced to change Judaism in order to be eligible for German citizenship or full citizenship as an equal citizen & human. It doesn't come from German Jews wanting to change their religion. Just saying.

There are multiple causes for cultural and religious evolution, it doesn't have to be either-or. Some of the motivation for religious change in Germany was definitely to "earn" emancipation, but some of it was also Jews' exposure to outside ideas of the Enlightenment and the culture of their neighbors which changed their own beliefs and practices.

Also changing the Torah to suit your political ideology isn't Judaism Ben Gurion didn't do that, Levi Eshkol didn't, moshe Dayan didn't Golda Meir didn't & they were secular socialist Jews, so why are you?

So Reform, Conservative, Renewal, Reconstructing Judaisms are all not Judaism because they ordain rabbis? Even some branches of Modern Orthodox Jews ordain women as rabbis. There are no rabbis in the Torah or for that matter in the entire Hebrew Bible. "Rabbi" itself was an innovation! The vast majority of Jews today accept that women can and should be ordained as rabbis - 15% doesn't get to define the culture and religion of 85%.

I know we generally shy away from inserting modern politics into archaeology, but in this moment as Dr. Finkelstein demonstrates a Tanakh edited and compiled for a political narrative, I hope everyone agrees: This presents troubling, irrefutable evidence that the basis of a "Promised Land" and a right to kick out the original inhabitants kind of falls away. And, if we think really hard, we might realize why this would shake up modern politics if ever the public should pay attention to Finkelstein's work
