From Blessing to Curse (From a Donkey's Mouth!) - Balak (Numbers 22:2-25:9)
zhlédnutí 130Před měsícem
What would you do if your donkey started talking to you? What would you do if your god made you bless a nation you wanted to curse? What if it commanded you to commit murder? These questions and more arise from the Torah portion “Balak” (Numbers 22:2-25:9).
Vows and Violations -- Nasso (Numbers 4:21-7:89)
zhlédnutí 39Před 2 měsíci
While the narrative of the Exodus towards the Promised Land has mostly ground to a halt by the book of Numbers, the Torah’s legislation around priests, purity, and promiscuity continues to fascinate. In this Torah portion, we find a procedure to test a wife’s fidelity, vows of devoted consecration, and a special blessing for priests to offer the people. They are windows into the Jewish past, ev...

Arguing Jewishly part 2 - The Power of Words
zhlédnutí 243Před 3 měsíci
Jewish culture has often emphasized the power of words, from Genesis creation accomplished by “let there be,” to replacing animal sacrifice with fixed recitation, to the idolization (and even idolatry) of a book of books. Today, we argue ever more fiercely over the meaning of words: “free speech” “Zionism” “justice” “antisemitism” “democracy” are just some of the battlefields. Can our Jewish pa...
Arguing Jewishly part 1: From Kvetch (complaint) to Community
zhlédnutí 195Před 3 měsíci
Over the centuries, Jewish civilization found ways to domesticate disputes, accepting multiple interpretations and diverging opinions. To be sure, there were heretics and schisms, but the joke “two Jews, three opinions” is rooted in real experience and core values. How can this tradition of debate provide models we can use to deal with differences today? The International Institute for Secular ...

The Laws of War and the Gaza Conflict (2023-2024)
zhlédnutí 185Před 4 měsíci
Until the 20th century, most wars saw armies in uniforms facing each other with clear rules of engagement. Guerilla warfare, civilian casualties far behind the front lines, the lack of clear front lines at all, asymmetrical conflicts between terrorists and first world armies: can the laws of war handle 21st century conflicts? The struggle between Israel and Hamas highlights these issues for our...
What Counts as "Genocide"?

The term “genocide” was coined during the Holocaust to describe the intentional attempt to destroy a national, racial, ethnic or religious group, and was ratified by a United Nations convention in 1948. In recent years, the accusation of committing genocide has been thrown at Russia and Israel, Sudan and China, Myanmar and the Islamic State. What does it take for tragedy to become “genocide?” R...

Mazeltov on achieving your Rabbinical qualification. Your warm and wise voice is so very welcome and inspiring.
Thank you Prof. P.
The Hellenes did not invade Greece at the time of the appearance of the Sea Peoples. The existing Mycenaeans were Hellenes. Im confused why Asherah would be so unexpected in artifacts. Isn’t she literally mentioned in the Bible? And isn’t it constantly complaining about the Israelites worshipping other gods? Why *wouldn’t* there be artifacts showing polytheism in the first temple period - wouldn’t the Bible actually be lying if we did *not* find polytheism? lol
(21 August 2024) At 40:43-48 of this video Professor Israel Finkelstein cites the Egyptologist, Donald B. Redford, that the Egyptian geographical setting for the Exodus is the Saite period of the 7th/6th century BC. However, the REAL BOMB SHELL IS Finkelstein's acknowledging that Redford (an Egyptologist) has pointed out "a very ancient event " is being preserved in the Exodus: That the Hyksos Expulsion of ca. 1550 BC by Pharaoh Ahmose I, has been recast as Israel's Exodus in the Bible! Cf. pp. 412-413 Donald B. Redford. 1992. _Egypt, Canaan and Israel in Ancient Times._ Princeton University Press. "There is only one chain of historical events that can accommodate this late tradition, and that is the Hyksos descent and occupation of Egypt...in fact it is in the Exodus account that we are confronted with the Canaanite version of this event..." If Redford is right, drop the nonsense of looking for an Exodus date of either 1446 BC (1 Kings 6:1) or 1260 BC, Ramesses II, its 1550 BC!
Ridiculous hair style (and does he have a combed-over??!)
Your audience so idiotic laughing wildly over small deviant detail. Bad schooling.
What great memories! Sherwin at his prime! I've often cited that speech of my dad's, but thought the original to be lost to posterity. Thanks for posting!
Jewish Mother, Black Father from Detroit. My Jewish Uncles were very connected in the City, and my dads family were connected too. I had my Uncle Hersch who was cool, and my Dads Brothers who treated me like Gold. I remember when this lady said I was not a Jew, and one of the Older guys, rejected her statement. I was never more proud to be a Polish Jew.
This guy must be a sailor because he keeps rocking back and forth making me dizzy.
Was there evidence of Solomon at a time when Jerusalem was had a population of four or five hundred

This women's entire industry is in disproving faith, and indeed, truth. I don't care if she has a 1,000 letters after her name, she is indicative of the 20thC academia that has coerced, confused and led astray 3 generations of Westerners and has plunged our society in 2024, it abyssal chaos!
Secular Humanistic Judaism? What's so important about haning on to the last part? I used to be a Christian. Now I'm a secular humanist. Period. I guess some baggage is hard to drop.
Lots of interesting thing said here. Ecclesiastics and Job directly influenced by Epicurus? Job seems like a book about God and spiritual forces showing deep concern over human affairs. Epicurus thought the Gods disinterested entirely. So Job was a parody? A comedy? I just looked that up and yes! Not how I was taught when I was a member of another heretical sect to arise out of ancient Judah. "We don't believe the earth was created 2000 years after the Babylonians already drank beer" 🤣
Many ancient societies have their own David and Goliath stories.
But we know the bible isn't factual from the "get-go." All we have to do is read the first passeges of Genesis. No self-respecting scientist would accept the age of the Earth and the universe as described in Genesis. So there's the first loose thread. Then, as the bible continues, there are many "tugs" on the thread until the entire fabric lies on the floor in a pile of string.
How could they make him stop when he was getting to the origins? Everything up to that point was foundation to the conclusion. I went to the referenced website to find his paper but it requires a login. Can anyone direct me to his conclusions about the Israelite origins?
The proceedings from the Colloquium were published in this volume by the Society for Biblical Literature: "The Quest for the Historical Israel" - cart.sbl-site.org/books/061717P?ID=061717P&PG=1&Type=BL&PCS=SBL
But just because the "memories" of several hundred years before, were written by the Jewish priests or scribes doesn't mean those memories are of Hebrews. That's a frequent point of Finkelstein, i.e. that memories of heroic deeds or persons were appropriated by the early Hebrews as their own. Much of the Jewish Bible is an accumulation of ancient memories of events that preceded them throughout the Middle East. It's similar to a book of historical fiction but with extreme liberties.
It would be interesting to discuss the Saducees and their disappearance after the destruction of the 2nd Temple
Propaganda not science.
Mishhh reading something when you are not sure what you are talking about. Remember that the Israeli people started to get some strength in 1948, let them get the finding now from 3000 thousand years ago, and let them be at peace. IT IS A JEWISH NARRATIVE THAT CHRISTIAN AND MUSLIM COPY AND PASTE. A good one, better than this Carol Meyers that is not honoring her ancestors.
I’m not a Jew, actually I almost clicked away when he first said “catholic” with a certain amount of observable disdain. But he couched some very really interesting knowledge into easily understood and humorous language. I watched a couple other videos on this page, and came back to this one because it caught my attention so thoroughly. Awesome presentation. Idk… Just wanted to raise my hand and say how appreciated this thoroughly knowledgeable and wonderfully presented speech is. And that Prof. Shlomo’s presentation earned another Catholic subscriber. (Said with honest respect. I just enjoy a little interfaith jabbing at each other.)
Thanks proud of shulamit aloni 😎🇮🇱🔯🇺🇸🔯😙

I'm watching this video as part of my "Humanistic Judaism 101" course. Thank you!
It is pretty absurd to apply as done at 27:04 that the bar is only achieved if Israel explicitly declared state policy to wipe out Palestinians of Gaza: no country would do this in the modern era for exactly the reason its explicit admission to a state crime that would immediately bind Convention signatories to respond. Not even the Rwandan genocide rises to this level as it was right-wing Hutu Power political parties & their private paramilitaries, augmented by ad hoc community pogromists-who actually carried out the killings, not the normative state or army in the main.
Was unfortunately forced to listen to this because my ride was listening to it. Lookout for his next lecture accusing the rabbis of starting world war II and 9/11 and killing Kennedy. So much of what he says can be disproved by anyone that's seriously study talmud. Another thing to point out is that all the Jews today every single one of them if they go back four generations they will find disturbingly that their ancestors have been followers of those dumb rabbis that caused all these terrible problems.
Jokes are on you, eventually you'll see.
Siempre nos vamo a encontrar historiadores con varios puntos de vista evolutivamente siempre en medio oriente los pueblos fueron evolucionando de las regiones pero las mismos pueblos de generacion en generacion semitica
I think the Hapiru were the Hebrews, and were distinct from the Israelites.
This guy has humor and knowledge. Beste combination.
Babylonian teachings... focusing on the creation instead of the Creator.
Jews/jewish people have nothing to do with torah. They were Hebrew people and Israelites.
who is this person from London?
This should be required education in every classroom. Ditch the religious crap and be guided by what we know and can prove.
I find these views equivocate on Antisemitism. Also, ideological and verbal Antisemitism has, as you know, led to much more severe forms.
Lady on bottom is so over it
This was so good! Thank you!!! 💜
FYI, I too am a Secular Atheist/agnostic Jew, but I think there needs to be a limit to how much we change Judaism to something it isn't & then still present it as Judaism. Why? You can just be an Atheist or Agnostic Jew like me.
Btw, Reform Judaism comes from the German emancipation where Jews were forced to change Judaism in order to be eligible for German citizenship or full citizenship as an equal citizen & human. It doesn't come from German Jews wanting to change their religion. Just saying.
There are multiple causes for cultural and religious evolution, it doesn't have to be either-or. Some of the motivation for religious change in Germany was definitely to "earn" emancipation, but some of it was also Jews' exposure to outside ideas of the Enlightenment and the culture of their neighbors which changed their own beliefs and practices.
Sorry I'm not intending to offend you, but you're offending me. This isn't Judaism, women can't be Rabbis in Judaism. Also changing the Torah to suit your political ideology isn't Judaism Ben Gurion didn't do that, Levi Eshkol didn't, moshe Dayan didn't Golda Meir didn't & they were secular socialist Jews, so why are you?
So Reform, Conservative, Renewal, Reconstructing Judaisms are all not Judaism because they ordain rabbis? Even some branches of Modern Orthodox Jews ordain women as rabbis. There are no rabbis in the Torah or for that matter in the entire Hebrew Bible. "Rabbi" itself was an innovation! The vast majority of Jews today accept that women can and should be ordained as rabbis - 15% doesn't get to define the culture and religion of 85%.
Oof, that intro....
Engrossing
I know we generally shy away from inserting modern politics into archaeology, but in this moment as Dr. Finkelstein demonstrates a Tanakh edited and compiled for a political narrative, I hope everyone agrees: This presents troubling, irrefutable evidence that the basis of a "Promised Land" and a right to kick out the original inhabitants kind of falls away. And, if we think really hard, we might realize why this would shake up modern politics if ever the public should pay attention to Finkelstein's work
