This is running on a ZX81 not a TI99.
Seeing this makes reminds me how it smelled using the old printer and Metal paper. 😊
i used to buy these magazines and spend hours typing in the code then hours trying to find my mistakes then hours trying to fix their mistakes you would then put them on to a C3 tape and leave them on the shelf of the bookshop with the tiny number of computer books that were around then you would take a different one then bring it back next time cloud - file sharing - programing teams, we had them all in the 80's I still have my 81
The Atari 8-Bit type-in programs didn't have this problem in the end. Atari User Magazine introduced a checksum system called "Get It Right!" which put a two letter code at the end of each line in the listing in the magazine. If the line you typed in matched that code, you got it right! No more headaches!
@@Foebane72 far too sophisticated for the ZX81 mags
Memories come Back. Thanks 😊
It was a huge part of my early teens. I still remember how good it felt to find the error, correct it and eventually play the game. Good times. Kids today don't know the half of it!!😜
I actually had an expansion card for my ZX81, a voice synthesizer that I used to read out all the code I keyed in, especially if it was lots of assembler in the form of numeric lists. Then I could lie in bed and verify that everything was ok. I can't remember which card it was, but it had a large Texas Instrument chip.
Reverse frogger with missiles ? Neat.
I temporarily paused another video I was watching to come watch this one, it was worth it! These were magical days when this stuff was coming out! Chalk up another sub.
I remember trying to do that sort of thing on my Apple //c, and being disappointed when I couldnt get it to work because I really wouldn't have any understanding of what I was doing until years later. Talk about cargo cult programming!
Well that looks horrifically boring.
130 rows of code ?
Love these old programs. Don't love typing them in.
Looks good, I wish it had some instructions. For example, what is the red ball doing? I did notice in the code a statement I've never done before: If OP then So controlling a if/then statement with an outside calculation.
Here's an idea: SAVE CS1 to output an audio file from the emulator, then play that audio file sound in this video, then we could load the game up either into an emulator or a real TI 🙂
Can you send me a copy of the listing please?
Game kesukaan sya
USA washers are better bc we don’t have beko
This reminds me of the balloon traveling minigame in RuneScape!
Talk about a high stress job! I always wanted to be an elevator attendant but not anymore.
I remember typing in a game from a magazine with a friend of mine. We spent all morning typing it in. Once finished we agreed we deserved a drink before hitting run....I stood up and pulled the power lead out as I walked away....urghhhhhh
Talk about some spaghetti code. Unfortunately this is another game where the player is almost completely at the mercy of the TI random number generator. I think this game could be improved if the programmer had required the player to hold the button down and used sound with no visual indication to determine how far the bomb has dropped. The player would then release the button when the sound reached the pitch or volume at the correct moment to blow up the top of the sky scrapper.
10 CALL CLEAR 20 PRINT “HERE’S A QUARTER, CALL SOMEONE WHO CARES” 30 GOTO 20
Faults aside, this is very nostalgic. Not the game, which agreed is not great, but the experience of having code brought home in a magazine.
@@dirtylabrat958 The good old days. The way it was meant to be.
I remember entering hundreds of lines of code over days, giving it a try and it would crash. running the debugger and finding I missed a space or miss spelled a word. But I had days and days with nothing to do in the summer. We had the 512KB memory expansion box. It was the size of a PC gaming tower
@@woodzy575 I would type with my 2 little fingers at the age of 4. Using the above loop to scroll messages for my mom on the screen. One day I typed up 1000’s of lines (which were probably incremented by 10 so really 100’s)… and after fixing the last typo, typed RUN. I saw an animation and heard sounds playing but there was a problem… Like any obsessive kid, I had been bouncing in need of a restroom break for hours. Delaying the pleasure of enjoying a new game just long enough for a bathroom break.. Then the trauma event occurred as time slowed down and I rounded the corner towards the living room and saw my mom flip the power off and all was lost. Guess I wasn’t too deterred as I’m nearing 30 years of software jobs, but would have loved a hard disk! (TWSS)
You are recording videos using classic99 but it is not the real TI99 graphics because you are using filters present only on the emulator settings not on real TI99. I suggest disabling them to have a more real aspect of the images in the video.
i had one of these in 1984 or so, with the tandy tape drive!!
Nice, but I"m not sure why this required TI Extended Basic.
Seeing this certainly brings back some memories. Way back in 1981/82 I typed this into a ZX81 from a magazine all because a friend of a friend wanted to know what day his birthday would fall on in the 'far off' year of 2000! Didn't have a printer back then so I had to duplicate the display on a notepad with a biro!
The things you can do these days
love it
A good looking simple game requiring a little strategy to win against the computer.
40 hours to type in 1 second to lock up your computer
cool channel! i was just recommended your video from the youtube recs. really fun to see old code come to life.
What a great looking game!
Pretty good looking game about the exciting world of warehouse work. No saving pretty princes here, just schlubbing pallets around for the company that barely pays you a living wage, then going home for an ice cold Pabst Blue Ribbon and Sloppy Joes.
I think I actually typed that game before playing….
I really enjoyed watching this / I was working at TI when these Microcomputers were introduced. Thanks :_)
It looks like a barebones space version of frogger . Freeway for the 2600 had two player interactivity compared to both games .
Did you just show how to program caterpillar into a calculator?!
Ti99/4A is a personal computer from 1981
This is a great looking game.
Large sprites for basic
Cant believe we didnt see this at the game awards
"Back in my day we had to spend 6 hours typing in the game before we could play it!"
"Pick the flowers!" The flowers: ⚓
Really cool of you to be showing these type-in games and showing the listings as it's not as easy to find these nowadays! Think I'll have a go at converting this game to SmileBASIC on my Nintendo Switch!
nice ghost animations. Strange that the key icon doesn't disappear when you grab it. One of the better Basic games
Maybe the frog has a key cutting machine on him and duplicates the key? A locksmith frog.
Pretty nice looking game for a type-in this one.
When I got my C64 I didn't know anything about programming yet I was obsessed with it. We had this very old B/W television with wooden legs and god knows what kind of AV connector at the back but the worst thing was that I had to wait weeks before finally a family friend made a cable so that I could connect my C64 . Anyway I immediately began to buy computer magazines and I just could not understand the magic, I entered a lot of numbers (as far as I remember, only numbers) and viola, a program began to run.
Ah, I honestly do miss those old type in programs. Usually it wouldn't work at first so you'd have to comb over all your code looking for the mistake you made...OR the following month they would publish an addendum, "Whoops! We made a mistake in line 1235. Remove the second semi-colon!" or something similar. Although the machine code ones were faster, by a lot, I actually preferred the full BASIC ones because you could analyze and learn from the code.
I loved programming my hp41
still have one of those collecting dust in a drawer
Remember typing in listings from 80 Micro and other computer magazines for games and other stuff.
Do you remember Jake Commanders Star Trek? My brother bought the TRS-80 because of that game in 80-micro. Took weeks to type it in and a few more weeks debugging (and learning) it. Was a fun game
@@Aussiesnrg Remember the Jake Commander column, but yes there was the typing in the listing and debugging it. Always wondered if Jake Commander was a real name or made up one, at any rate it was awesome.
Those are the days.
Man I used to have one of these waaaaay back in the day. :)
Heh, cool. I scan the pages, use OCR, then feed it to a tape drive emulator to load on the 99. :)
Haha oh man, this for some reason came up in my recommended.. I remember trying to do one of these from a magazine in 4th grade that my typing class teacher gave me since I was already typing over 100wpm by third grade Was on an Apple 2, not sure if it was the same language though I didn't do it correctly though because the program wouldn't run haha, I remember the teacher trying to see if she could look for typos in my work and get it to run and couldn't either
