I used to be a big mark for the "P-40 sucks" theory because of a game called Heroes of the Pacific. It wasn't until my own future research that I came to respect the contributions that the Warhawk and its derivatives provided.

I have to defend the XC-14 and the OV-1, in the category of weird but cool. However, that obligates me to nominate alternates. Mine are the Martin T4M-1, the Blackburn Blackburn's American cousin, and Witteman-Lewis XNBL-1, which is the most hideous machine to receive an official designation from the USAF or any of its predecessors.

Very hard to argue with your choices, as a Yank I'll argue harder when you do American aircraft, but I have to give a nod to the BAC TSR-2, as badly flawed as that machine was, and also to the SEPECAT Jaguar. No doubt though that the Hunter was as pretty a second-generation jet as they come.

I felt like I was crazy but I just saw a plane a few days ago that looked exactly like this plane. I am in flight path to Spokane intl airport or Fairchild AFB or Geiger field. It has nothing on right wing and a long bullet shaped thing on left wing

The American fighters were built for low-medium level operations up to 15,000ft.The Alison was never modified for high altitude performance in single seat fighters. The exception was the twin-engine P-38 which needed huge turbo-superchargers taking uo much of engine booms. The German and Italian aircraft were built for their best speeds to be around 20,000ft and so were far better at higher altitudes,

I was always very annoyed at the Army for NOT issuing these flyers better survival gear.....at least regarding this particular Bomb Group. I still dont get that. Maybe that Could have helped. "Maybe".

Most tailless designs have wing sweep, at least, if not more elaborations. This looks as though you just get the front end of a conventional twin, with some big endplates at the wingtips. Did Kalinin have some special tricks that aren't visible in photographs?

Have to agree with some other commenters here. I had known the P40 was widely used, but I had never known it was used by that many different countries and for that long period of time. It was just a damn good workhorse through the war.

My understanding of - admittedly modern - air dropping of tanks is that they drop a tank, then drop a repair team to put the tank back together. Anything can be air dropped at least once.
