    One thing that you could add is to make sure that you have a Barbershop Quartet (or Chorus) willing to sing your arrangement so that you can hear the result of your effort. It is very useful to be present when they rehearse the song - as you will learn what works well and where they have difficulties! It would be an idea to join the Chorus to experience for yourself how difficult - easy - effective your arrangement is - and you will meet many of the Barbershop effects and styles in the process of singing other arrangements. Hi Soren, when could you make a video to achieve good bass-baritone blends? thanks

    • @BarbershopTagAlong
      @BarbershopTagAlong Před 19 dny

      That’s an interesting topic! Also a difficult one for me to make as an individual, but you could record some sessions with quartets or choruses to demonstrate how you can work to improve blend. These are some things that I think goes into good blend (regardless of voice type): 1) Match your energy and engagement. So if your bass is singing a low note on the lower end of their range, the bari should not necessarily just power through in volume, but instead find ways to amplify the bass’ note. We can to this by matching the two singers’ timbre. Seeing how the bass is on it’s lower end, the bass singer’s sound and timbre is most likely warm, relaxed and maybe a bit breathy. The baritone then needs to match that - which doesn’t mean just to directly copy the sound of the bass, but maybe just making sure their timbre is open and maybe go for a bit darker tone quality. 2) Matching vowels and resonance This is difficult to explain, but each voice is unique and we all have varying degrees or formant 1 and 2, meaning that one singer might have a voice with darker sounding vowels(AW as in the word “Long”), and another with brighter vowels (Æ as in “Last”). That would then typically mean that the singer with naturally darker sounding vowels would need to work on brightening up their vowels, and the other darkening their vowels, in order to blend better. These are just some tips/ideas. Who knows, maybe I’ll turn it into a video one day 😄

    Very entertaining and instructive. I've dabbled in arranging and have a story I'll share. I once arranged a song for a Harmony College contest to get a free attendance scholarship. I got the scholarship but in the meantime my quartet was casted for a Music Man production. The rehearsals and performances lasted several weeks and I missed Harmony College that year. I gotta find my Barbershop Arrangers Manual and my old notes. Thanks for the inspiration.

  • @RedWindField

    During the ring of the last chord, I could hear these amazing metallic sonorities, like tubular bells struck rhythmically. Turns out my flatmates were making electronic music downstairs that was in key with the chord. But still! Btw do you have perfect pitch or is any pitch flex used to tune these chords?

    • @BarbershopTagAlong
      @BarbershopTagAlong Před měsícem

      I don’t have perfect pitch, but I do have a pretty good ear to tune chords. I’ve studied just intonation for some time, so that helps in terms of knowing where to put each note to make the chords ting. I usually use a bit of Melody to gloss up the timing and correct minor inconsistencies, but I strive to use it as little as possible.

    Excellent video! As for your question at the end: I generally like outlining what kind of textures I will be using in different parts of the arrangement with just a few words at each place before starting with step 3. This way I can gather inspiration about what I want to do and get a feeling for how the arrangement will look at the end without getting too bogged down by the details, or without feeling limited by the harmonies I have already put down on paper. But I'm very much a beginner, so anything I say should be taken with a grain of salt 😅

    I liked version 2 the best. The slight drift in the bass sounds cool, and it feels like the group is really embellishing the lead melody in the most resonant way possible, without the lead compromising whatsoever.

    • @BarbershopTagAlong
      @BarbershopTagAlong Před měsícem

      Yeah, I kinda like it too, but sometimes the bass sounds too “off” in version 2, so in cases like that, I would split the difference between all parts and go with version 3.

  • @amosbatalden5871
    @amosbatalden5871 Před měsícem

    Isn’t version 3 just what happens naturally? In my college acapella group we don’t talk much about just intonation but when we sing passages that have barbershop-esque homophonic harmony we tune to each other so the chords ring. I feel like if everyone is listening to each other it’s the most natural way to fix this issue

    • @amosbatalden5871
      @amosbatalden5871 Před měsícem

      Also, I think it’s okay if the tonic drifts a bit. As long as it’s not too much, only people with perfect pitch can really notice and it’s never bothered my friends with perfect overly much. It’s okay for music to not sound like a computer, just have every note be close to tempered but pull just a little for the chords that need to ring

    • @BarbershopTagAlong
      @BarbershopTagAlong Před měsícem

      You could say version 3 is what happens naturally, but that to me requires that you know how to tune and ring chords, and know which intervals to alter slightly to get it just right. But if you know what you’re doing, this is probably the best way to go about it at all times. Some new barbershop groups have a tendency to aim way too flat, probably because most of the time, tuning low is the thing that makes chord ring (thirds, 6ths, b7 and even major 7ths), but because these groups Force notes downwards to MAKE the ring, instead of naturally finding a balanced spot to LET the chord ring, these groups rens to sound flat sometimes, or even drop in pitch throughout the song.

    Not sure this really counts as theory but could you do one on vibrato? I sang in a pretty good vocal jazz group in college, we won a downbeat award one year, and our director absolutely refused to let us use vibrato unless it was in the lead part, just a little bit, and in solos. When I'm feeling snarky I feel vocalists started to sing with vibrato to deal with the even tempered piano and its all-encompassing dissonance. Very difficult to sing a grinding chord with vibrato and have it work. PS If you had somebody improvise in your quartet, you'd have a vocal jazz quartet :) lots of good music for that combination. PPS I have some scat singing videos on my channel. Awful production values but I can scat sing.

    • @BarbershopTagAlong
      @BarbershopTagAlong Před 2 měsíci

      Hmm, I might do that but since it’s not much used in barbershop it might be a bit off topic though. The use of vibrato is both a matter of musical history and -culture, an expressive tool, but also a way for the voice to relax (especially when singing high and long notes). But in general in barbershop, the use of vibrato is very polarizing - some like it and some hate it.

  • @jazzrat2000
    @jazzrat2000 Před 2 měsíci

    Overtones are why God gave us just intonation :) I've yet to hear one come from a piano. Sometimes you can get a string to vibrate if you hold a key down, I'm not sure that counts. When I was still teaching the jazz ensemble I used to show them about chords and how they needed to be tuned by using the trombone section. I would get a couple of guys going on a perfect 5th and then let the girl if there is one :) put in the major 3rd and mess with it until you hear it in tune and the overtones

    • @BarbershopTagAlong
      @BarbershopTagAlong Před 2 měsíci

    I sang barbershop in high school but that was 50 years ago: I don't remember hearing about a barbershop 7th chord until about five minutes ago. If you have something called a barbershop 7th chord, can't it just be called a dominant 7th chord? If it's on the 5th degree of the scale I would say it's dominant and if it's on any other degree, it probably is a secondary dominant?

    • @BarbershopTagAlong
      @BarbershopTagAlong Před 2 měsíci

      The reason the term “barbershop 7th” is used is because of the way we tune that chord compared to other musical generes and styles. So yes, you could just call it a dominant 7th 😊
