As I was reading Alma 27:34 tonight, I noted that it names the four sons of Mosiah as Ammon, Aaron, Omner and Himni. That makes me wonder if Ammon was the oldest after all and that’s why he blessed his brothers and the others who had traveled with them. Maybe birth order had nothing to do with the people’s choice of Aaron to be king. This podcast got me thinking….thank you.
Great episode! Thank you. ❤
your theory about the name "anti lehi nephite" is not crazy, that's the same impression I've received years ago.
Kerry Muhlestein indicated the meaning of Anti-Nephi-Lehis may be "not-Nephi" Lehites. In other words, those not descendants of Nephi but still descendants of Lehi. That is an interesting interpretation. However, Alma 17:19 seems to indicate that those in the land of Ishmael where Ammon was preaching are descendants of the sons of Ishmael who became "Lamanites." So it would seem that they are not descendants of Lehi at all but of Ishmael. Or did I misunderstand what was said?
This may be way off but maybe this could help. I understand that the sons of Ishmael were possibly married to Lehi's daughters and the sons of Lehi married the daughters of Ishmael except for Zorom. So most of their children would be descendants of both Ishmael and Lehi.
Although among modern Jews, a determination of Jewishness for children comes through the mother, Lehi, Ishmael, and their descendants lived in a patriarchal society so the dominant lineage identification would be through the patriarch. This is indicated by naming their geographic location as the Land of Ishmael and that they were descendants of the sons of Ishmael. Of course, children are the descendants of both their parents. But who the sons of Ishmael married is purely speculative.
Thanks for your great discussion on these new converts' chosen name and its application to us personally.
I am so very glad it was helpful for you!
Thank you for sharing your experiences.
Ben's experiences really helped me think this through. There is so much depth in the BoM!!!!
"Go because you know" Thanks for so many insights and thoughts!
That was one of my favorite things that came from this episode!
I have wondered for years why Ammon was "the chief among them" (Alma 17:18) when Aaron appeared to be the eldest. The thought came to me this morning that it might be that the tradition Nephi started by appointing his brother to be a priest to the people continued in the line of kings, and that Ammon was the one thus appointed.
That really could be it. There are so many examples of it not being the oldest who God chooses that it is hard to know what to think of it. Nephi may have been making that same point. Good thought.
I love the Book of Mormon and have been in awe this year as I teach our 10 to 11 year olds in Primary! But these chapters, one little girl especially, has been looking forward to for weeks. She wants to hear the stories about the Lamanites becoming a Chosen, Covenant and righteous people. This week we’ll begin! Thank you for these insights!
That is one of the fantastic elements of this week's reading. That part is so uplifting! It is true of next week's episode as well!
I have his book, and I listen to all his podcasts. Hilton is excellent and has a great sense of humor and the funniest stories to tell! I'm grateful for the opportunity to continually learn from you, incredible Saints!
He is wonderful to work with, isn't he?
Thank you for this presentation! Also love the Book of Mormon. If you haven’t listened to this particular episode, you have a treat in store.❤️
Thank you! I loved this one too!
What a treat!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It was for me too!!!
Great insights and info. We can definitely apply the teachings and examples of the BoM. I’m loving your book on Understanding Isaiah. I’m learning so much. It was lovely to meet John Hilton in Atlanta in his sons mission Macedonia ward. I need to get the Book. Voices of the BoM. You both are so informative
I am so happy to hear that the podcast was helpful, and that you were able to meet John, and that you are enjoying the Isaiah book. That makes me so happy. Bless you!
@@TheScripturesAreReal thank YOU!! for all you do!!
@@skemp2520 I am just happy to do anything that helps, and am thrilled when I learn that it has. Bless you!
I thought in their culture that servant and slave were the same.
I think that is probably right, though we don't know that much about their culture.
@@TheScripturesAreReal I guess it just helps give light to Lamanitish, and maybe why the servants that lost the flocks were just destroyed because they were slaves or servants.
@@ruthjamieson4072 Agreed!
Such a good episode! I love the idea of I Go, for I Know and I Know, for I Go. That's powerful! And I definitely want to put it on a T-shirt, one on the front, the other on the back.
I think that would be such a great t-shirt! I keep thinking about that phrase again and again.
Another possibility regarding "Lamanitish": this is 3 generations from when King Mosiah the First left the Land of Nephi and the Lamanites took over the land. Lamanitish people may have been descendants of unbelieving Nephites who stayed behind and intermixed with the invading Lamanites.
That is true.
Thanks much Kerry...great discussion! You both are scholars but expressed your ideas in more conversational language so that even dummies like me can catch on to the principles......love it!!
I am glad it was helpful! This is just so much fun to discuss!
Thank you. This episode was a bit mind blowing for me. On one hand, as I listened I wondered “have I ever read the Book of Mormon? How could I have missed all these tidbits?” On the other hand, this challenged me to go back and read again, seeking out all those small and nuanced treasures within the stories. Your series is always edifying but this was exceptional.
Nothing makes me happier than to hear that you were back in the scriptures. Mission acomplished!
Great episode! I also learn so much each week from Come Follow Up!
Ben always gives us such good stuff!!
Scripture says that Abish was a Nephite Servant. As we know servants often derive from being taken in battle. I also read that all of the servants of Lamoni were Nephite. Also in his father’s kingdom.
This is interesting. I can't find where it says that she is Nephite. Can you help me find that? I don't think we have any evidence that all of Lamoni's servants were Nephite. I don't think we know anything about them at all. So much food for thought!
So good,,thank you. Great points drawn out, Ammon a type for Christ, he protects the kings sheep and brings them back to the fold, as Christ does for our Heavenly Parents children. Ben was so the perfect person for this scripture block. The last two episodes have drawn out so much of what is at the heart of Christ’s suffering for us, and these events are recorded in the middle of the Book of Mormon, in other words at the heart of it’s testament of Christ. Thank you both.
I think you are right, Ben really helped us think this through. Such good stuff in there!
Someone asked about the verses about not casting someone out of the synagogue and ministering to them and perhaps they can be healed. It is 3 Nephi 18:22-32.
An excellent interview. Thanks for all your hard work in these presentations. Looking forward to next week.
I am so very glad it was helpful for you. Bless you!
Is there a way to get the pdf of the article she mentions?: Newell Wright (North Dakota State University) - “The Trial of Jesus Christ as Reflected in the Book of Mormon: A Typological Interpretation of Alma 14” I found the title from the program but can’t find any link to text. Thank you!
I am struggling to find it too. I will look into it further.
Bro Lomu is my Granddaughter's institute teacher, and she loves him! Go UTES!!
He is awfully good! Go Utes! (and all the Utah universities!)
Another remarkable episode! I was blessed to hear you speak at Ensign College two weeks ago and encourage everyone to listen. I appreciated the discussion about how Aaron might have taken some counsel from Ammon and his approach with Lamoni. On the other hand, I know from personal experience as a past early morning seminary teacher, that when one of the teacher's had a successful class by using a specific approach to a lesson, if another teacher tried to replicate the lesson doing the same thing it was always a failure. It was clear to us that we were prompted for the students we were teaching and it wasn't necessarily going to work with a different set of students. Thank you for such an instructive discussion with Brother Hilton...and please come back to Ensign College anytime.
You are so right! I think the service approach worked for Aaron when and where it was supposed to work for Aaron. The Lord does His own thing in His own way at His own timing, but if we are willing to listen and learn, He will bless us in the effort! I hope to come back to Ensign anytime you will have me.
Might it be that someone called Lamanitish was a descendent of Ishmael, who - may have become a servant to King Lamoni, the Lamanite King of the land Ishmael, as a result of a war fought at some time earlier, between the Ishmaelites and Lamanites?
That is a real possibility. We should keep asking, and hope to one day know!
Abish was a Lamanitish woman.
That is the other time the phrase is used, and she is a servant too. One whose parent had an experience with God. So curious, isn't it?
I was about to say the same thing at Abish a Lamanitish woman, who was a servant of Lamoni's wife. We here about a remarkable vision of her father. Either her father had a vision that converted at least some of his family or she had a vision of her father. If Lamanitish is related to descendents of Amulon and his priests and the Lamanite women they kidnapped, that would be very interesting. Or perhaps Lamanitish was introduced in the lost pages. Mormon was good at introducing terms.

Thank you so much for this unique look at this week’s study. I was so touched by the empathy and compassion expressed and feel better able to sit with someone in their suffering.
I was also very blessed by this conversation. I am so grateful that Kylie was able to take us there. Bless you!
I am so glad that this was the message you received. Thanks for listening!
Thank you for deepening the message of this part of Alma. I had wondered if Amulek’s family had been slain in the fire because Alma had taught them and blessed them and that therefore this experience was even more traumatic than I had realized and it made sense that Alma , Almulek, and Zeezrom had suffered greater suffering and trauma than I had imagined. Thank you for sharing this message.
I want to emphasize that I don't know if Amulek's family was part of the suffering, but it makes the most sense to me that they were. And you are right, thinking that through really does deepen the meaning of what happened here, and makes us sort through some difficult things that we need to sort through. Thanks for your comment!
I agree with what Kerry said. We do not know that Amulek's family was burned, but I believe it makes the most sense. It seems most likely that they were taught when Alma "tarried many days" at Amulek's home (Alma 8:27). Even if they chose not to believe, they likely still fall into the category of being "taught to believe" (Alma 14:8). If, on the other hand, they were not burned, it is still a tragedy. We know that Amulek was "rejected by those who were once his friends, and also by his father and his kindred" (Alma15:16). It is possible that Amulek's wife and children are among the group that reject him. If so, then Amulek has seen those closest to him reject the gospel, and stand back while he is turned over to the law, tied up, tortured, etc. Given Amulek's prominence and his family's prominence (Alma 10:1-5), there is also the horrific possibility that Amulek is not only watching people who he knows and loves burn, but that he is watching his father and/or his kindred become the kind of people who burn the innocent women and children.
It was good for me to listen to your sensitive discussion. Sometimes we think we have to say something profound in difficult moments. But being present in the moment and saying nothing is often the best we can do.
Sometimes it is hard to not say anything, but usually anything I say will only make it worse. I am grateful when someone is just there for me.
So true!
What an INCREDIBLE epsiode!!! I learned so much! Listened twice so far. More to learn. THANK YOU BOTH!!!!!
I am so very, very glad it was so helpful for you!
I testify that the Lord is merciful and eager to comfort us during our great heartaches. In 2019, our 14 year old son took his life. It was a nightmare in every possible way you can imagine. I knelt to pray every 30 or 40 minutes to simply be able to get through the day. Every single time I turned to the Lord for strength, He lifted me, giving me the power and ability i needed to be able to lift and strengthen my husband and our 4 other children. Even though we are still temporarily separated, I have been given to see the glorious reunion ahead, and occasionally feel that it's already happened. It's a witness to me of the power of Thinking Celestial. It's real. Because of the power of Jesus Christ, our family can cheerfully continue our individual missions here in mortality, while our son continues to learn and progress as well. The Atonement of Jesus Christ can fix anything if we receive Him. Learning is still possible for each of us. And as we learn, we can find comfort, peace, and JOY, right now, through Him!
I am so glad that you and your family have been blessed, even in times of the most terrible trial. Thank you for sharing that. Our ways and times of comfort and help come differently for everyone. How glorious that we know that in Christ they will surely come for all! Thinking Celestial can help us get through the terrible nows, though it doesn't take all the pain away. Thank God that we can look forward to the glorious and joyous later in Celestial days! Bless you and thanks for sharing!
Amen to what Kerry said!
Thank you for sharing such a timely message in this materialistic world!
I am so very glad it was helpful for you! Bless you!
Thank you for this insightful podcast! Her deep and touching dive into these chapters have touched me and changed me!
Me too! It is so wonderful to be able to learn from each other in this way!
Thanks so much for sharing this response. I believe that much can be learned from reading slowly and carefully.
That is so kind of you. This is such a difficult moment in the Book of Mormon. As it has slowly became real to me, I have found (surprisingly) strength in witnessing Alma's pain. Sometimes we think that if we could follow every prompting from the Spirit, then we would be able to avoid all the suffering that life doles out. Knowing that a high priest of the church of God suffered extensively while following a direct command from an angel tells me that that thinking is incorrect. And just knowing that seems to help. No need to suffer ... and then make it worse by blaming yourself for your suffering.
thank you!
I am so glad it was helpful!
thank you!
Amen to all the grief that can be shared together and in Christ. Thank you both for your beautiful thoughts and feelings shared. Kylie your sister must have been so comforted by your efforts to share in the grief that is experienced in suffering. In our Initiatory area in the New Zealand Temple there is a beautiful painting of Christ weeping with Martha and Mary so very beautiful, sorry I do not know the artist just now. Backing on to the back of these verses is Alma 40 where Alma expounds on the doctrine of the resurrection verse 20 reads that it is his opinion that the righteous who have died before Christ’s resurrection rise with Him at His resurrection. I like to envision all those who have heeded the prophets and come unto Christ did rise with Him and do shine forth in the kingdom of God, as Alma teaches in chapter 40, and also as you said at the beginning of the podcast Kerry. My mother died at 44 years when I was seven years old, I know that the Lord will make all things work for good for all eternity. Jesus will make all things more than right for all eternity.
It is so amazingly comforting to know that despite whatever terrible things happen here now, one day all will be made right. That covers everything we worry about. It doesn't take away all pain, but it is surely comforting!
Yes, I am so glad that you pointed out the doctrine taught in Alma 40. What I find striking is that Alma says he "inquired diligently" to know about the resurrection (Alma 40:3). Then he goes on to say that he "inquired what becometh the souls of men from this time of death to the time appointed for the resurrection" (Alma 40:7). And then he repeats how he has "inquired diligently" to know "concerning this space of time" (Alma 40:9). I think it does not require too much speculation to read into Alma's diligence about this specific topic. It returns us right back to Ammonihah and his concern for the women and children.
@@kylienielsonturley9616 Thank you Kylie, yes I agree, the whole experience seems to have affected all of Alma teaching from that traumatic fatal event. Alma and Amulek had both been instruments in bringing them to Christ, they had rescued them in a spiritual sense but were unable to physically. It must have helped Amulek to have been able to continue with Alma in bringing others to Christ. Thank you for your feedback Kylie, on one of my studies of this section of Alma’s teaching I have felt that the experience gave Alma great understanding of the laws of justice and mercy, and that he was able to share that knowledge with his sons, who went on to work for the salvation of souls. Is Alma’s teaching on the law of mercy the clearest we have in scripture?
What a wonderful discussion on these heart wrenching chapters. Thank you both. Prayers for Kylie for her challenges and gratitude to her for sharing precious time with us when her family was there! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻❤️❤️❤️❤️

We love to get love from Australia! We send it right back! And this really is an important subject that I think Kylie handled so beautifully. I thank God for the comfort He sends through the Holy Ghost and His Son!
Thank you for this hard but beautiful podcast. Kylie is the daughter of my cousin and what was said here has helped me so much as I have been struggling with the shocking news of an unthinkable tragedy that just befell the daughter of another cousin. This podcast was perfectly timed to be an answer to my prayers. God bless you both.
Bless you! I think there was a lot of direction from God that brought everything about.
Oh, I do not know what to say. I have been without words for days, rather like Alma and Amulek, I suppose. We are praying for everyone in the family, especially the immediate family. I believe that God is involved is involved in the details of our lives, especially the timing of such things.
Thank yous so much, i have come to love Dr Skinner's insights, truly. and have gained so much from this. For some reason, these chapters in Alma also made me think of Paul sharing different messages for different groups, with the memory of his former life still sharp in his mind, but his love of the Savior after his miraculous experience and continuing working to know him, made him share with fire and passion for God. My mind is always so blown when i read scriptures looking for a lifeline or a smidge of hope and its like right at a crucial moment, God inspired people from ages past, to instruct this Maori lady in Aotearoa/NZ in 2024 how to live in the world as it is today with the security that He is aware of me and His love is true. Even when I dont understand why suffering and the isolating walks seem to hunt me specifically. That is a love and understanding that for me, inspires me to want to change for the good, to call out the voices inside that say dont bother your rubbish, and most importantly to see, treat and love others as Jesus would. Have had people tell me so many times in life - you cant save everybody....sadly, this I know to be true, however I also know that there is no body past the Savior's reach, so in His arms of love I try to feel I belong....kia ora korua/thank you both😊
Thank you so much! I love hearing Jan's insights and always look forward to hearing her on your show. Please keep inviting her back! ❤

They are definitely there. I will work on posting links when I have time to sort through and find them. Thanks!
So much to think about that I’ve never seen before as I’ve read these chapters. Thank you!!
I hope it was helpful for you. I am always amazed at how I can see things I have never seen before in the Book of Mormon. It is a testament to the depth and power of the book, and of how the Holy Ghost can keep teaching us what we need to know when we need to know it.
I love how you guys got into the minds of the people from these chapters. Very enlightening. I loved especially Alma's record being based on his experience. Thanks to both of you!❤
The more you think about Alma, the more impressive he is. Then his teachings come alive even more. It is wonderful stuff!
As I have studied these scripture passages before listening I found myself understanding the power in the word of God more intensely than before. I know when I’m in the scriptures daily I’m at peace because of Jesus Christ. He is our personal Savior. Thank you both for your incredible insights and the time you give to building the Kingdom of God.
Thanks for this. I couldn't agree more! There is such power in staying in the scriptures. Bless you!
