Multi-metal additive manufacturing: in-situ alloying, composition control and species mixing
zhlédnutí 90Před rokem
Additive manufacturing holds a great deal of promise in techniques for the manufacture of complex components, particularly when it comes to metallic components. Chinnapat Panwisawa, Queen Mary University of London, is an expert on developing the quantitative understanding of the process, with a deep metallurgical basis.
A smart toothpaste that “knows” what your teeth need
zhlédnutí 56Před rokem
Researchers from the Queen Mary's Institute of Dentistry and the School of Engineering and Materials Science have collaborated to develop an award-winning ‘smart’ toothpaste. BioMinF uses patented bioactive glass technology to protect teeth from decay and reduce sensitivity and pain. The toothpastes, launched in 2016, are now on sale in over 20 countries, with up to 100,000 tubes being produced...
Hard graft: How SEMS research created a landmark range of synthetic bone-graft materials
zhlédnutí 257Před rokem
Presented by Dr Karin Hing of SEMS www.sems.qmul.ac.uk/staff/k.a.hing Hailed as one of the most important feats of British engineering in the last 50 years, researchers have developed a range of cost-effective synthetic bone graft materials - called Inductigraft™ in the UK and AltaPore™ in the US. These innovative products are more effective than the current standard treatment - and patients do...

There might be 300,000 alloys of iron available today, with an annual production of 1.6 trillion kg adding to the quality of life. This success is attributed to cost, the ability for mass production, and the thousands of phase changes and processes that can be exploited to manipulate the properties of steels. The challenge then, is in developing quantitative theory that not only represents the ...
The magic of graphene and gallium nitride: from basic science to starting your own company
zhlédnutí 429Před 2 lety
This talk covers two important device materials, gallium nitride (GaN) and graphene, which can save lives, save energy, and make computers go faster. Gallium nitride LED (light emitting diode) lights in our homes and offices are already changing the world, since they can save 15% of all the electricity we use. Ultra-violet LEDs can destroy all bacteria and viruses, and are starting to be used i...
Aeroengines and steam turbines: extreme engineering and materials science
zhlédnutí 167Před 2 lety
The talk covers some of the leading technologies governing the use and invention of materials for aeroengines and steam turbines. The methods used for designing the metallic alloys are described in simple terms. The talk covers aspects such as intellectual property, whether machine learning can be identified as “intelligent”, the inverse problem and a generic description of materials science as...
