5 Tips for Moderating a Fantastic Fireside Chat
OK, so you've been asked to moderate a fireside chat or onstage interview at a conference. These are my five best tips, from preparation and research to getting the audience engaged and ending strong. They're based on my experience moderating LOTs of fireside chats at conferences around the world, with speakers like Malcolm Gladwell, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, inventor Dean Kamen, futurist Ray Kurzweil, Craigslist founder Craig Newmark, former Boston mayor Kim Janey, etc.
The video is intended to be helpful to both moderators, and event organizers including fireside chats in their agendas.
After the video, I've included some bonus footage from actual fireside chats I've moderated with entrepreneur Steve Papa; Lucasfilm exec Vicki Dobbs Beck; Internet memesmith Ze Frank; and former Massachusetts governor Deval Patrick.

Great tips. Thank you so much! I'm designing a panel of 5 rookie panelits, and I think of presenting on a slide the 2 or 3 questions each panelist will snswer in 5 min, including tell us s story... Then once they are done, ask just one question about an opportunities from their perspective to elaborate in 1 min. Then audience Q&A. How this dynamic looks to you? Thanks for the feedback!
Love the video! This is helpful for the fireside chat I'm prepping for :). Side question, what brand/style jacket are you wearing? I like the fit!
CZcams gold!
Successful moderation, I am a fan already.

Doing my first this Friday and this is exactly what I need. Simple but efficient.
Thank you, this was very clear, concise and immediately usable!
Thank you so much Scott! Combining this awesome idea with what I learned from Kristin Arnold's 7 part CZcams lessons about moderating, my very first ever panel was the most talked-about session among the C level attendees of the conference. I did trash about 30 index cards to get one right but an outstanding 'hack' for any moderator.
Yes, you will use a few index cards with this method! Glad your panel was a hit!
This is super helpful. I am moderating a panel this week for the first time. Thank you!
