The King James Bible is an intensely political work, and up until the 17th century, translating the Bible into English was a dangerous act, done in secret, and punishable by death.
Then in 1604, King James I of England authorised a new translation of the Bible, with the intention to clarify religious differences, but also to solidify his power and supremacy. In so doing, he unintentionally democratised a book which for so long had been withheld from the masses. He ended up creating the “people’s Bible”.

I have a copy of a William Tyndall Bible. It is awesome. So to hear that he was a genius linguist is no surprise. So cruel how they murdered him(burned him alive) for his work on the translation of the Bible.

The Clergy wanted to keep Bible in Latin and only for the rich and powerful to have access to the Bible. Thankfully God made the Bible available for all of his human children. Best Selling Book since 1611, more evidence of Divine Origin

May I offer a correction here? The Pilgrims arrived in the New World in 1620 and brought with them the Geneva Bible, not the King James Bible. The KJV was seen as the Bible of the English King and the state Church of England which had been persecuting them. My understanding is that the KJV didn't start becoming popular in England until the 1660's.

I am very shocked that Tolkien's widowed single mother converted to Catholicism from Methodism, even though it meant that her dead husband's family totally disowned her and stopped supporting her and her children! Either there was some other pressure for her to go Catholic, or she truly had an unshakeable belief that the Catholic church was the true Christian church...to leave her family in poverty over that decision.

Here in the Bible Belt, the KJV is still considered the "only" Bible by many churches. Comparatively, it is so much more poetic than, for example, the New International Version. Not a churchgoer anymore, but when I do read the Bible, it's this version still.

Taking on the Bible is a huge topic-I’ve always wanted to understand more about its formation but found it daunting to look into. And quite frankly, the bible is so huge a subject-and my interest is only middling-I’ve never tried. I see why (or at least part of why) you focused on the KJV rather than the basis of all the various books in the Bible. Now I’m going to go back through this video while reading the transcript so I can absorb more of what I heard. This film is understandably somewhat dense; one sitting just won’t do. Thank you so much for this effort!
