Flying around the Lake Erie islands. Departed CGF to 3W2 (Put In Bay) runway is 2,900 feet. Then 3 miles north to Middle Bass Island, the runway is 1,800 feet. Planned to go to North Bass but another 1,800' runway with a 18kt crosswind. Doable but not looking for that much work on a nice VFR day. MVFR Approach Turns to Low IFR | Cirrus SR22 | Flying in the Mountains

What was supposed to be a simple MVFR ILS Approach, turns to low IFR. In no way am I saying these conditions are good but the GoPro makes the visibility look much lower than it was. Weather was calling for MVFR all day, no snow, nothing. After being cleared direct to RSK to join the ILS 25 approach, the weather dropped to 3/4 mile visibility and light snow. After breaking out at minimums, I det...

Landing a Cirrus SR22 in Freezing Fog and Snow | ILS Approach to Minimums | READ DESCRIPTION
zhlédnutí 343KPřed 7 lety
Many comments saying I went below minimums. RVR is not a controlling factor for part 91. Flight visibility is though. In this case, as pilot in command, I determined that the flight visibility was adequate (1/2 mile or greater) by using the ALS as a reference. (Refer to part 91.175.) PAPI lights were in sight right after the "minimums" callout. "Lights no runway" was referring to the PAPI light...

    Too bad you gave up filming. Had some great IFR content. Probably could have gone some place with it.

    Friggin amazing approach. As others have said, your precision flows and procedures are quite enviable. I’m sure your sight picture looking outside from in the plane was much different than what viewers can see through the camera lens.

    I’m sorry but I have to disagree with a lot of the comments. I have been flying for decades. I would avoid flying in these conditions in a general aviation airplane as a single pilot. I would never go fly practice approaches in this weather. This is why so many people are dying in general aviation.

      Just having the main TKS doesn’t effect my view although some sprays onto the windshield from the prop. But using the windshield TKS does to an extent and that is why cirrus says to refrain using the windshield tks 30 seconds before touchdown.

    Technically just seeing the PAPI lights is enough to land. The "rabbit" (approach lights) in sight lets you go to 100' AGL, but PAPI in sight is good for landing.

    Commercial/instrument, 300+ hours & haven't been up in years but will begin CFI training soon. I've not yet flown a glass panel. My question is, what is the chance of all those digital instruments going black in the soup? Are steam gauges as a backup now a thing of the past? Great video! That ILS picture on the panel is amazing! With that kind of "visual" I may be tempted to go below minimums. I just have difficulty getting past that panel failing. I guess you have the BRS, though.

    • @Cirrus_Driver
      @Cirrus_Driver Před 2 lety

      Thanks for watching! Everything is very redundant with the G1000 perspective. (2 ADCs, 2 AHRS, if 1 panel goes out the other picks up everything and the backup instruments give about 30-45 mins of extra battery life depending how many systems you’re running). Not sure if I’d say that steam gauges as a backup are truly a thing of the past quite yet but they are definitely being phased out quite fast. The synthetic vision is great for situational awareness. Last thing, while the CAPS parachute is a great addition, I never would do something where I’d think, “oh worst case I can just pull the chute” it’s really there if you’re in a life or death situation. I still practice power off 180s and whatnot. If I lost my engine and there’s a runway to make, that’s for sure my first choice, but if I’m over mountainous terrain for example and no place to land, well then the parachute may be my best option if I want to walk away alive.

      @@Cirrus_Driver Thanks! I believe my biggest hurdle, coming soon (next month!) will be learning technology, digital instruments, programming navigation, and glass panels. I'm going to get current first with my commercial/instrument ticket, then start CFI training. I work on F-35s, but want to instruct as a second career.

    The controllers were probably thinking that you were nuts, but you were never behind the airplane or the weather situation. Well done! I used to call up my flight instructor every time there was poor weather and say, "Looks like a great day to fly!" We practiced approaches to minimums so that when I was by myself, it wouldn't be so difficult. Flew into Tampa once in my Saratoga II in minimums, at a higher speed than normal to be able to merge with the jets, and all that training paid off.
