Whirlpools, Black Holes, Event Horizon and Not At All The Same?
Imagine yourself at a point opposite of the light source, and it would look like the "shadow" of a black hole.
I filmed a water whirlpool in my garden fire pit. The sun was almost right above me, making the whirlpool cast a shadow. Despite similarities between whirlpools and black holes are generally disproven, and that they are very distinctive phenomena, this video kept bugging me for 3 years and now I'm releasing it for all you, to give your thoughts :)

    Where can the larger IGBT (Bricks) be salvaged from? I understand they're generally in large inverters but every time I go to the scrapyard I only find the smaller variants and am looking for 400+A 600+V ones.

      That is most likely to be found in very large x-ray HV generators, variable frequency drives or UPS systems. But we are talking in the 70-150 kW ranges. These units are usually in the full size 19" rack enclosures. Newer systems uses many smaller IGBTs and large bricks are getting more rare.

    Looks alike, but it's not. I mean .. what would be the analogy for the sunlight (that's been bent and outwards to a circle by the shape of the water funnel and that's why we see a black spot with a bright outer edge) in space time / black holes?

  • @yaakovc.5393
    @yaakovc.5393 Před 16 dny

    as the light passes through the curved geometry of the wirlpool funnel the refraction creates a region where no light touches, and all that light gets redirected to the edge of this circular shadow.

  • @martinfyhn1976

    Cool clip! The whirlpool looks exactly like how the bending of space/time is represented, for a black hole.

  • @u2222be
    @u2222be Před 17 dny

    I think it's due to the different refractive index of air and water. As the whirlpool forms and the surface of the water in the center is pulled down the angle between the incoming light and surface of the water within the whirlpool changes. At a critical angle the light will reflect instead of passing through (forming the dark circle). It seems related to a phenomenon called "snell's window". It's also absolutely mesmerizing :) Thanks for sharing!

    • @KaizerPowerElectronicsDk
      @KaizerPowerElectronicsDk Před 17 dny

      Snell's window is fascinating, got me further on to total internal reflection and unfortunately all examples of the law and concepts, works out from a flat surface. Anyone got a program to raytrace sun down through a funnel of water?

  • @gth042
    @gth042 Před 17 dny

    The orbital mechanics and your floating debris seem analogous. The space/water surface is bent, and the object floats away from both buoyancy and momentum vector. The surface is also preferentially getting sucked in, giving the "gravity". Thus, you see opposing forces oscillating like an unstable orbit. For the shadow, I think we have multiple air/water interfaces at work. We normally see water on an approximate plane. I'd need to write this out but suspect the three big factors producing the round shadow are: Simple reflection pushing light out of the area (noting the water/light critical angle is constant and the vortex round and its curve continuous); internal reflection (noting the "over-sharpened"/glowing edge of the shadow may come from light passing through two sets of interfaces); and, by extension, a small amount of double refraction (helping enhance the perimeter light). This is an excellent problem for Walter Lewin's channel "

    • @KaizerPowerElectronicsDk
      @KaizerPowerElectronicsDk Před 17 dny

      I know the funnel is not black hole'ish, as a black hole should look the same from all directions. Maybe the halo comes from light being reflected upwards from the bottom of the funnel and ends up being reflected by the upper curvature. I also like the extra small bow of light on the perimeter, clearly from the angle of the sun in this setting.

    Сколько преобразователю лет? Что это за старинный дизайн такой?

    I doubted the 230/400V but is actually is. So what the hell runs on 400V single phase there or an odd combination of 230/400 like that? Since from neutral to each phase is a 120 phase shift, if it was 180 it would be 230/460V. Or do some house get fed like that to split the loads across two phases and save on wiring in a third and the loads are all 230V?

      @KaizerPowerElectronicsDk Před měsícem

      It just uses 2 out of our 3 phases. So there is still 120 degrees between them. All Danish houses are fed with 3x400VAC.

      @@KaizerPowerElectronicsDk OK so what is the purpose of missing one phase if the houses are fed three phase? Are there any 400V devices or is this just to save on costs and run two 230V L-N phases instead of three.

      @@inothome Good question. I think it is an adoption from standard products to Danish markets where subsidies from government to solar panel owners was limited to 6 kW installations. Balancing the entire distribution system was properly not considered to be an issue, unless installers get directions from power plants on which phases to install it to.

    Hi, to be honest, i was pleasantly surprised when i saw that familar shape on the thumbnail ^^ I've been with Fronius for almost 10 years now, so the IG Plus line of inverters was already cancelled and replaced by the SnapINverter series when i joined, but i had my fair share of work with the components in the electronic manufacturing department, as it was sold with up to 20 years of warranty. The lower section of the inverter, that is missing with yours containes the AC and DC connection area and the system control board, as well as the display. 60Vdc are way to low, i would need to look at the datasheet again, but start up voltage should be around 250Vdc. Each power class uses the same board + inductor combination, it's numbers are varying, depending on the phase number and AC output power. There was a revision of the power board, you either have the older PINCI 1, or the more recent, backward compatible PINCI 2 board. The newer one can vary the power factor, as some DNO require a Q/(U) or Q/(P) control. If you want to make the INV operational again, i can send you the article number of the bottom section, you need a specific control board, called the IG brain (yeah, the pcb designers had the TV show (Pinci and the Brain) in mind 😅, when naming the boards), that has been programmed for a 2 power stage / 6kw output power inverter and the specific region. Ps: the conformal coating was dropped with the succeeding generation of inverters, as by then the housing was IP66 protected, so nothing stopping you there from salvaging some components! Best regards from Austria

      Thank you very much for the insights! The PV voltage I stated as 60V is way wrong, I also noted that in video editing :) This inverter is not going to run again, I got no business case in repairing stuff like this.

      @lukasaran45 Could you tell me a bit more about the isolation / boost transformer? Why does it have triple parallel primary wires from PV side and only single thinner wires on the secondary side? Is it just built like a tank for very low PV voltages?
