Portable Buddy vs. Flame King CHS10
I didn't try hard to make this a fancy, cool, video--but I tried to make it a comprehensive comparison between the Flame King CHS10 and the Mr. Heater Portable Buddy propane heaters.
I actually did A TON of tent heater tests if you want to see more information on that, you can check it out here: czcams.com/video/AT4CUNHwrfA/video.html
Out of the 7 heaters I tested, I think the Portable Buddy was the best out of all of them, you can see another test lineup where I evaluated the heat and efficency of the Portable Buddy against several other heaters. That video is here: czcams.com/video/bLlxJLVMm9U/video.html

    How the Mr Heater low oxyben sensor works (from my understnading). If propane is completely burned, the byproducts of that burning is CO2 + H2O. If incomplete combustion occurs due to low oxygen level, then CO is and added byproduct. That indicates to me that the heater is faulty. In the Mr Heater Buddy heater, there's no actual low oxygen sensor. It's actually a venturi that allows a limited amount of air (O2) into the pilot light circuit. Just enough O2 that's equivalent to the O2 levels at and below 7000 ft. The pilot light needs a certain amount of O2 to contiue buring (at least 16% O2 which is equivalent to aobut 7000 ft elevation. Above that, the pilot light wanes and goes out due to the lack of O2 through the pilot venturi. The pilot light heats a thermostatic valve that keeps the propane flowing. If the pilot light goes out, the valve closes and shuts off the flow of propane. You'll see in the owner's manual that the altitude limitation is 7000 ft. If you get any CO, there's a defect that needs to be addressed.

    It appears an electric blanket under your sleeping bag (or better, inside) with solar setup ia the best solution than a propane heat option. Not without its potential issues of burning up but thats if the coils get smooshed to create a short. I plan to test a 150W electric heater in my rooftop tent as i think slow and steady is better than fast, high btu output without a thermostat in the such a small space. Thank you.

    I have both the flame king and portable buddy. The flame king has a thermostat, which I thought would be a great feature, but does tend to make the flame flutter like that when it's trying to keep the output low. I end up mostly using the buddy, but not all night. In the end, it's better to just get a good sleeping bag and then only use the heater to keep you warm while getting dressed in the morning.

    I never understand these videos, what is the difference between using this heater, and using propane to cook with in your home? My grandparents always had propane stove and heat (literally open flame) and never was an issue? Are you testing that propane is not leaking or are you testing will it kill you or not? Thats why even after I watch the videos I am baffled and what people are trying to prove when propane is burned in homes by millions on a daily basis. The O2 sensor probably kicks in at 70 ppm, that the actually limit that CO2 sensors will alarm.

    • @DecideOutside
      @DecideOutside Před 7 měsíci

      Good questions. I proved through my testing that some heaters actually will cause a build up of carbon monoxide--If your tent is not vented properly, you could die. It's not an easy way to die--you're more likely to set your tent on fire to be honest. As far as your kitchen goes -- your kitchen has a vent and your house is a much bigger space. It's really about concentration of gas, not quantity. It's a good reference point but not apples to apples. All in all, I think the carbon monoxide is a scary silent killer that gets all the attention, but isn't the biggest problem. I know people had questions about it so I thought I'd try and see how bad it really was. And... I learned the risk is non-zero. So... yeah.

    I heat my tent up a bit which takes very little time, turn the heater off and then go to sleep. In the morning I light the heater off while still in my sleeping bag and when the tent is warm, I get up. No need to have the heater on all night if you are dressed properly and have a decent bag.

    I disconnected the tip feature on my Buddy heater. I need to move it around the tent from time to time and it’s frustrating to have to relight it every time. I can’t imagine a scenario where I would tip the thing over and start my tent on fire and not know it immediately. I’m pretty sure the tip prevention feature is legal protection for the manufacturer and nothing more.
