Is Akkermansia the New Cure? How Gut Bacteria Fight Chronic Disease | Empowering Midlife Wellness
Our understanding of the vital importance of the gut biome has skyrocketed in the past 10 years, yet we are still just beginning to learn all of the incredible functions of these healthy bacteria.
Today I'll be reviewing the role of healthy gut bacteria in the prevention of multiple disease processes, including the most common diseases that affect American women- obesity, insulin resistance, diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
I will particularly be talking about a really interesting key bacteria called Akkermansia, and a growing body of research suggesting its importance in weight maintenance and insulin sensitivity, amongst other things.
Since learning about this, I have started taking the Pendulum brand Akkermansia product myself (I'll explain why I prefer this brand in the video though I have no affiliation with the company), and recommend it to many of our patients. I think after listening to this, you will consider it too!

Please - Im new to this channel and praying you can provide wisdom on my issue that there is essentially zero information on anywhere. I had an emergency hysterectomy and bilateral oopherectomy 3.5 yrs ago at age 49. No doc ever said a word to me about HRT or the impact of suddenly having zero estrogen in my body, and within months of the surgery my physical wellness went to hell. Fast forward thru severe suffering, I finally discovered HRT 1.5 yrs ago..originally with compounded Biest cream which helped my hot flashes, but the debilitating full body, head to toe, excruciating joint pain that onset after losing my ovaries was untouched by the cream. Then I switched off cream and over to the weekly .1 generic estradiol patch a few months ago. Same issue...my hot flashes (100%) and brain fog (65-75%) are under control, but the debilitating joint pain in every single part of my body is never-ending, is getting worse each day, and I can barely move or walk or function. Then a couple weeks ago, I experimaented by putting TWO .1mg patches on at the same time hoping that would give me some magical relief, but no improvement at all in the joint pain (And I hate the patches bc they dont stay on (i have to wear adhesive over them), they cause massive itching, and Im just not a fan.) So, all that to say that Im guessing that this .1 patch (the highest dose produced), and even 2 patches, is waaay too low a dose for someone without ovaries. PLEASE...I cannot find this info anywhere and my doc doesnt know how much to prescribe me or in what form...What on earth is the proper dose of estradiol (body-identical) (and the best non-pellet delivery method) for a woman with no uterus or ovaries, esp given the results Ive explained, and the horrific full-body joint pain on the dosages noted above. Am I correct that those in surgical meno with no ovaries need MUCH higher doses of estrogen replacement yhan women who are in natural memopause? Id be incredibly grateful for any and all feedback and wisdom and specifics you can offer please about what I should try because there is just no info out there on this topic and years of my life are passing by and I truly cannot function due to the joint pain. Thank you in advance for reading all this and hopefully replying.

This is exactly what I was trying to explain to my oncologist and it was like I was talking to a wall. It's like she didn't understand what I was saying, but she doesn't have to live in my body for the rest of her life. I would rather have a good quality of life than be miserable when I go through menopause. I read the book estrogen matters and without hormones your risk of heart disease and osteoporosis increases. Plus there are a lot of potential side effects when taking tamoxifen.

Thank you for an informative video. I enjoyed listening to that. The microbiome are so fascinating. The first time I heard of akkermansia was many years ago, before it was available to buy. It was Dr William Li, in a Ted talk. He mentioned that the immunotherapy works better in patients that have higher akkermansia levels. He said that when his mother got cancer he got her to eat pomergrant or pomergrant juice (can't remember) prior to her successful treatment. When my kids were born I was given a brochure to buy ' l reuteri drops' to avoid colic or noro virus . Didn't think much about it, just bought it and kids never had any troubles. Years later I decided to look up about l reuteri on CZcams and see what that was all about . Saw Dr Davis videos and And found it easy to make yogurt' I reuteri' yogurt in the Instant pot. Akkermansia can not be made in an instant pot 😅 haha. It sounds so crucial. Thanks

In addition to fast food diets and chemical additives in our food, the main culprit to our microbiomes has been the ever increasing use of the herbicide glyphosate (known as Roundup by many) in the last 30 years. Glyphosate was originally patented as an antibiotic. It is sprayed on an array of crops, including non-gmo grains, legumes and sugar beets (that they make table sugar with) which they use to dry out the crop at harvest. This I feel is the main driver of the explosion of chronic desease in the last 30 years. I grew up in the 1960s and while I didn’t eat a lot of fast food, sugary treats were abundant and very few vegetables were eaten (mostly meat and potatoes with some canned peas or carrots was typical). Still there was relative health in the population, almost no autoimmunity, and very little obesity. So lack of fiber can’t be the main reason for our declining microbiomes. Switching to an organic whole foods diet whenever possible is the only way to stop the destruction of our gut health.

Hi, I am 68 years old, and went through menopause at age 43. I had been on HRT’s, which included Estrace and Prometrium until 2019 when I was diagnosed with BRCA1 mutation. I then had prophylactic bilateral mastectomies, and hysterectomy with BSO. Intraoperative I was found to have stage one fallopian tube cancer. The timing of all this was nothing less than miraculous. I had chemo prophylactically at that time., and have not had reoccurrence. As you would expect my HRT‘s were Ripped away from me. So essentially, I have been off HRT‘s for five years. I am wondering if stopping my HRT’s cancelled out all the years of cardiovasular, neuro protection. My main concern at this point is that my mother as well as her sister had dementia. I do have some arterial plaque, but not obstructive. My labs are all great and my lipid panel is fabulous as I am on Crestor. I really want to go back on some form of HRT, because dementia is a fate worse than death. No doctor will have a conversation with me about this. I just get the side eye and eye roll.
