Milk quality; Understanding TBC (Total Bacteria Count) or Standard Plate Count (SPC) in bulk milk
TBC, or total bacteria count, or Standard Plate Count (SPC) measures the number of bacteria in bulk milk.
Bacteria come from three sources, the environment, milking equipment and the cow when she has clinical mastitis. Bacteria grow quickly in warm conditions. They do not grow in the bulk tank as this milk is kept cold at 4C.
High numbers of bacteria cause milk to go sour quickly, to fail the alcohol test and increase the TBC reducing milk price.
You need to milk clean, dry teats with clean hands. Stainless steel milking equipment should be used and cleaned and disinfected after every milking. Milk from each quarter should be checked before every milking. Mastitis milk must not be consumed or sold.
Take your milk as quickly as possible after milking to the milk collection centre or milk bulking group to reduce the risk of milk going sour, failing the alcohol test and having a low TBC.

    Outstanding piece of universal training. Any novice dairy producer would gain form this video. Thank you. Small World! We milked all kinds but it was Jersey's in the 1970's-'80's. Then, volunteer in Mozambique and find some Land O Lakes Jersey's. Soon, be in Malawi and again dairy cows. WOW! Stay Safe. Most of the "new farmers" in America might want to know of this series? US Extension has pretty much left these folks behind.

    How many kg of madeya I can give caw aday?

    • @smallscaledairyschool
      @smallscaledairyschool Před 10 dny

      Most people would give 1 kilo of madeya for every litre of milk produced. This helps to make the most of milk production but also helps with fertility. You need to cow to be eating lots of energy for the ovaries to work, for the cow to come on heat and to get pregnant. The last thing you want is a thin cow

    . good job what is the ideal time post insemination for manual diagnosis of cattle pregnancy

    • @smallscaledairyschool
      @smallscaledairyschool Před 15 dny

      Three months is an easy time to confirm a pregnancy. You can feel the uterus has swollen and there are cotyledons which feel like buttons just before the surface of the uterus. More experienced individuals can detect pregnancy from about two months of age or even erlier but this requires training with a very experienced vet or technician.

      @smallscaledairyschool Před 11 dny

      @@user-eb6eu6xp1x This depends on experience. 3 months is easy. Some people are happy to 2 months. Earlier than that is a very skilled task. There is no easy answer, it depends on who is doing the PD and their level of competence. I hope this helps
