SHARK BAY - Seeing is Believing!! | Exploring Australia's Greatest World Heritage Area
“Don’t quit your daydream” - Anonymous
Shark Bay in Western Australia’s Gascoyne Region is a marine area (and World Heritage site) with three exceptional natural features: its vast sea-grass beds, its dugong population and its stromatolites. World Heritage places really are the best places on Earth and Shark Bay is listed because of its beauty and abundance, it has evolving habitats and species, it’s a window in time, and is a wildlife refuge.
Our first stop along the World Heritage Drive was HAMELIN POOL, to discover the history at the Telegraph Station and see the most diverse and abundant examples of stromatolites in the world. Our overnight stay at Hamelin Pool Caravan Park allowed us the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful sunset!
Next, we called in to SHELL BEACH, to see the beautiful snow-white beach made up of billions of tiny Shark Bay cockle shells up to 10 metres deep and stretching for over 70 kilometres. There is no sand, only shells!
We then stopped at a few different lookouts to admire the stunning Shark Bay Marine Reserve. EAGLE BLUFF (about 20k south of Denham) features a spectacularly high cliff that overlooks the Denham Sound. A boardwalk lies over the ocean where we could see dugongs feeding on massive seagrass meadows.
Time to hit the road!
