As far as the last speaker goes, I really like to carry her reasoning one step further to when those kids who have "started over" walk away from their families, often with no explanation, or at least with no attempts to work on building a new common ground. We've lost the accountability and common value systems of our small cities and towns to the endlessly open (and potentially dangerous) "community" of the worldwide web where you can find anything you want, and if you can't find it, you can say it and get others to agree with you by the thousands. You can hide your identity, change it as often as you like, and do things you wouldn't be able to do in a REAL town with people who may be watching at any moment. I'm very concerned for this generation of kids. My own have made it through largely unscathed, but only because we home educated our them and monitored their use of the internet, especially chat rooms. I am grateful my own children are thriving and feel so sorry for those children who feel so alone that they turn to strangers hiding behind a screen to help them deal with issues and questions they have about their past, their present, and who they will become. Listening to, walking alongside your kids as they experience life, and setting boundaries are all such important things for kids, and today's society seems bent on criticizing any parent (particularly women) who choose to be home with their children instead of working outside of the home just so the childcare worker can be paid. It all ties together, doesn't it? I believe we need to think about that for a while and those of us who don't support children who have gone a bit wonky on their own hormones and the opinions of very loud other people, being allowed to permanently alter their lives when they can't even legally drive a car. We need to urgently, but thoughtfully and caringly, need to speak up and work together to get the message out by listening better, talking louder, and helping more than the "you just don't understand...you are too old" misguided and/or misinformed zealots.

Interesting appraisal by Alan Hudson but I don‘t think he‘s entirely honest: for starters he confuses his premisses somewhat by talking of a fascist sympathiser facing some kind of home eviction which issue if at all really relevant is then quickly left entirely! Then he brings the abandoned tram by its communist party motorman and then the confusing matters of whether or not labour and/or communist party leaders wanted to take official action or not, and I understand probably not. He cites the communist party and of its home base of Russia as though it was a paragon of virtue - which many did think - but that was before George Orwell‘s observations were made known. Popular opinion did side with the Republican Government of Spain against Franco‘s military insurrection but little did it know of internal politics of that country eg the murder of a highly respectedright wing member of Spanish parliament Calvo Sotello answering the door at his home by government agents, an assassination taken as the last straw by Spanish army circles and an excuse to rise up against the ruling left wing government there. I think it's important to distinguish between "Culture Wars" and legitimate debate about cultural issues. These issues do matter. And it makes sense to discuss them, and reach some sort of democratic settlement on them. It becomes a "Culture War" when you're trying to get one over on the other team. When you're deliberately trying to antagonize or demoralize your opposition by capturing new ground and further politicizing culture.
