Interesting in that the professional Bernstein videos always capture him from the front, but the single camera here could only show how it was to see him from the back, the audience's vantage point. His only professional Mahler 9 video was made in 1971.

Two wonderful orchestras united by one great conductor, maestro Zubin Mehta. Bartok is not an easy composer, but the Israel Philharmonic did it!

This was a part of the public performances Ludwig and Bernstein gave of Brahms Lieder, but was not included on the CBS Record or the PBS show of excerpts, so it's nice to see. Mr. Benyamini is excellent.

本演奏をNHKホールの３階席で聴きました。来日直前のCDが出た時、記憶の中の演奏は・・と思いましたが、まさか、まさか、、録音があるとは・・ここには映像まで！当日、右隣の方の体調が悪く、咳をしたり、イビキをしたり、個人的な聴環境は「最悪」だったのですが、「最高」の演奏に遭遇した人生「最良」の日・・感謝！

I was there!!! I was still in Japan as a medical student when I fortunately attended this legendary concert in 1985. My teammate drove me to the NHK Hall after our rugby team's practice. We had to cross downtown Tokyo, which is huge and busy. My friend even ran a red light at a big intersection ("Omotesando") to deliver me in time. I don't remember exactly how I got one of the few remaining tickets. Anyway, I made it! Right after I finally reached my seat on this big concert hall's 3rd balcony right, Leonard Bernstein appeared and the music began. I think Mahler 6 had been originally scheduled, but I learned on the newspaper that Bernstein changed it to 9! His performance was so deep and absolutely electrifying. It was truly the best concert I have ever attended (interestingly, the second place is his protege Seiji Ozawa's Mahler 9 at the last subscription concert with the Boston Symphony Orchestra in 2002). The final movement in that 1985 concert was particularly incredible. When the symphony was over quietly, the audience erupted in applause, which continued probably >10 min! Bernstein returned to the stage multiple times and the orchestra members left. But the audience stayed! That indicated how much Leonard Bernstein was loved by Japanese fans. I ran from my balcony seat to the arena with hope to see him just one more time and more closely. After a while, he finally appeared in his overcoat! He, of course, had so many fans all over the world. But in that evening, I feel he was touched by the way we showed our great appreciation, admiration, and love for him. I still clearly remember those moments. But I now have this video too. Thank you for posting it.

大阪フェスティバル・ホールで聴きました。この公演当初レコ芸に出た時の予定曲目はマーラー　交響曲第6番「悲劇的」だったと思います。電話予約の際に受付の方から「マーラー　交響曲第9番に曲目変更となりましたがよろしいですか」と聞かれ思わぬ幸運に「是非」と返答？をしたのをこの動画を見て思い出しました。演奏は途方もなく素晴らしいもので感動でしばらく席を立てませんでした。終演後の拍手が鳴りやまずレニーが腕時計を指しながらコンサート・マスターの腕を引っ張って退場してお開きとなりました。この動画はあの時の感動を彷彿させる貴重なものです。存在自体が奇跡と思われる秘宝級の動画をアップ下さり感謝します。ありがとうございます。

この4楽章を超える演奏はまずないでしょう。こんな素晴らしい演奏を生きているうちに聞けて神様に感謝です。アマゾンで思わず購入してしまいました。

この映像の取り方は決して褒められたものではない。しかし、最初の出だしからなんという音色だろう。 バーンスタイン、振り向けない程、泣いていたのか。 この演奏は当日このコンサートにいた人達全員が作り出した超どきゅうの名演である。

This is an absolutely remarkable document. 1985 was the year of the last Mahler 9ths Bernstein ever conducted. He did it in Amsterdam for DG in June and I believe they went to the Barbican, a performance that is still talked about as being extraordinary, despite some snarky comments by Paul Myers in his book on Bernstein. He spoke about it as being “all over the place”. After this came a performance in Israel with the Israel Phil prior to a tour of Japan, where they played Mahler 9 in a number of cities. That tour included this performance obviously. After the Japan tour came, most famously, a concert at Carnegie Hall on Saturday, September 21st to open Carnegie’s 85-86 season. I attended that concert, which was life-altering for me, a musician. Looking back now I realize that Mahler might have preferred the Bernstein M9s done in the 70s. Despite David Hurwitz’s complete pan of the famous Berlin performance from 1979 and indeed the remarkable missing Trombone section in the climax of the 4th movement, I think that is also an incredible document with such an amazing 1st movement. The 1971 video with the Vienna Phil is exquisite and that is probably the best Bernstein Mahler 9 we have, in terms of clarity and balance. The 1985 performances are still absolutely extraordinary though. Yes, I agree with the naysayers about the final movement. It is just too slow but damn!!! Bernstein is completely dedicated to his vision of complete stasis and farewell. He saw it as the ultimate goodbye and thought it should be like dying. He said as much in his later interview with Gramophone magazine. You have to give it to him. His commitment to that vision is unfailing, and the rubato and drama of the 1st movement is peerless. This first movement performance is the Bernstein that owned this work to a certain extent. For all of Karajan’s precision and perfection in his award winning live recording with the Berlin Phil, it doesn’t come close to the humanity, beauty, emotion, and timelessness of Bernstein in this music. To SEE HIM, even in this awful quality video, is so moving. It is incredible that this exists. I wonder what other documents might exist from 1985, more video from Japan, audio recordings of all the Japan concerts. Perhaps a bootleg of Carnegie Hall or even that legendary Concertgebouw performance from the Barbican????? Every Bernstein Mahler 9 performance should be made available. This video gives one hope that there are more treasures out there. WHICH performance was this in Japan?? Is this Osaka?? Is it Tokyo??? Very curious. God bless whoever filmed this. 偶然にこの映像を発見。まさしくこの現場で聞きました。今でも思い出す名演でした。タクトがとまって指揮者が集中を解き会場の空気が変わってゆく状況を、今でも思い出します。アップしてくださった方に感謝です

９月８日のコンサート会場にいました。この日は、演奏終了後、本動画同様、やはり長い間がありましたが、バーンスタインは、オーケストラメンバー全員を起立させ、その後指揮台を降りコンサートマスターの席にいき、コンマスの左胸にかなり長時間顔をうずめていた（30秒間くらいあったかもしれません）ことを記憶しています。席が後方でしたので詳細はわかりませんでしたが、感極まって涙していたのではないかと察しました。演奏後のこのシーンは胸にくるものがありましたので明瞭に記憶しています。 一方、本動画では演奏終了後、バーンスタインは指揮台を下りず、コンサートマスターと抱き合っており、９月８日とは異なるように感じました。おそらくもう一方の東京公演の12日の演奏のものと思います。 本演奏の動画が残されていることに驚きました。深く感謝いたします。 なお、しばらく前に大手レコード店にて、東京公演のマーラーは音声として収録されているがCD化は権利面の問題でできていないとの話を聞いたことがあります。ほんとうであれば、ぜひCD化をお願いしたいです。 Thank you for upload for the video. I was there for the concerto on 8th Sep, that is one of the best and supreme experience in music. Judging from Lenney's action soon after the performance, it seems different action from the concert on that day. I would think it is the other one in Tokyo, that is 12th Sep.

偶然この奇跡的な動画を発見。私は大阪のフェスティバルホールでも聴きましたが、テンシュテットの５番、アバドの３番と共に私が日本で聴いた最高のマーラー公演の一つ。第４楽章は只々感動、感動の嵐。この演奏会からもう40年近く経つんですね。オーケストラ団員が去った後、熱狂した聴衆に何度も舞台に呼び戻されたレニー。最後は腕時計を指差して「もう帰る」と聴衆に合図した時のレニーの笑顔が演奏会の充実度を表していました。UP、感謝です。

伝説の黒マント。ＮＨＫホールの８日でしょうか。まさかこれを聴ける日が来るとは……夢にも思いませんでした。ありがとうございます。ちなみに高校時代、フェスティバルホールで聴いたクライバーバイエルン国立歌劇場Ｏのアンコール（ベートーヴェンはつまらなかった！）こうもり序曲と、雷鳴と電光が生涯のオールタイムベストエクスペリメント。この時はマーラーの凄さに目覚める前で、フルトヴェングラーにうつつを抜かしておった時代です。その半年前ですか。もうちょっと早くマーラーの凄さに気づいていたら間に合ったかもしれない。時を戻したい。

1985年イスラエルフィルとの伝説的な来日公演ですね！よくこの時代に隠し撮りができましたね！このような貴重なものをアップしてくれた主に本当に感謝です！

今や語り草になっている伝説的な来日公演のマーラー。バーンスタイン自身の全てを注ぎ込んだ入魂の名演。中でも第４楽章のアダージョは30分に及ぶ圧巻の演奏！DDG盤を遥かに凌ぐマーラー。このような演奏は二度と現れないのでは無いかと思われます。是非、正規盤のCD化を望みます！

バーンスタインが、演奏後に、録音しておけば良かったと、大変悔やんだというエピソードがあるように、大変素晴らしいマーラーの九番です。特に最終楽章は、優しさと慈しみ、そして感動で溢れています。

Was this recording on September 12th? I heard the performance on September 8th. At the start of the final movement, Bernstein put his hands together and swung down the baton from above. Tears overflowed from my eyes. And I lost sight.
